Barrington’s Scarbrough leaps to title May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Just one jump remained for Barrington senior AJ Scarbrough. His spot at the top of the Class 3A triple jump had moved from first to third overall, so his final jump was going to make the difference between a bronze medal and a bright, shiny gold one. The usually boisterous Scarbrough was reserved and quiet as he began his pre-jump routine. He began his run-up and nailed the launching board with near perfection. The second phase of the jump was as good as the first, and his final phase into the pit was his best ever. It was also the best one of the weekend at O'Brien Field on the Eastern Illinois campus. "I knew it was big," Scarbrough said afterward. "I just felt the push with every step down the runway. I felt so strong with each phase. I just knew it was big." Indeed. His final jump of 49 feet, 4¾ inches was one of the best ever from a Mid-Suburban League athlete, and was the best in the state this year. The jump is also one of the 20 best in the nation this spring.

  • Barrington starter Cassidy Kraimer delivers to Prospect during the Fillies’ 2-1 win in 8 innings to capture the regional softball title Saturday.

Krzysko, Fillies survive Prospect in 8 May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's all-time home run leader Loren Krzysko was 0-for-3 as she led off the bottom of the eighth inning in Saturday's tense Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional softball championship game against Prospect. "I couldn't go 0-for-4," said the junior third baseman. "I knew I had to swing at anything good." Sure enough, Krzysko swung the game into the Fillies' favor when she doubled sharply down the left field line. Moments later, Krzysko advanced to third on catcher Savonnah's Osmanski's single to left and then scored on a wild pitch to Raegan Fingerman, giving the Fillies a 2-1 triumph over the No. 11 seeded Knights (11-26). The No. 4 Fillies (30-7) will now be swinging their bats in their own sectional next Wednesday, facing No. 1 Conant (32-3) in the 4:30 p.m. semifinal.

  • No early exit for Conant this year May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Last year Conant's softball team checked out of the postseason early, falling to Leyden in the regional championship game. This year, the Cougars are looking for an extended stay and they took a step forward on Saturday. Conant senior pitcher Briana Cavin held Hersey's bats in check while leading the Cougars to an 8-1 victory in the Hoffman Estates Class 4A regional title game. Top-seeded Conant (32-3) won its fourth overall regional title and first since 2005 in advancing to Wednesday's Barrington Class 4A sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. against No. 4 Barrington (30-7).

  • Palatine, Becker surge to title May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Palatine pitcher Kurt Becker never saw charging catcher Mike Czarnik coming to start a celebration Saturday. Few would have seen this coming a month ago as Becker threw a complete game and had 3 hits as the 14th-seeded Pirates won their 4A regional title with a 6-3 win over No. 5 Libertyville.

But a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th helped top-seeded Maine South escape with a 3-2 victory.

  • Elk Grove meets Schaumburg’s challenge May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Two bullets, a dominant pitching performance and a vacuum cleaner at second base helped Elk Grove capture a regional softball championship Saturday afternoon. The bullets were line-drive homers off the bat of Krista Soesbe in the first inning and Devan Parkison in the second. Soesbe's 3-run job erased a 2-run deficit and Parkison's padded the lead just enough for Dani Goranson to settle down and deliver the dominant pitching for which she has become known. As for the vacuum cleaner, that was second baseman Becca Maher. She handled four straight chances from the fifth inning into the sixth, including a diving stop that might have ignited a Schaumburg rally in the sixth and preserved a 6-2 Class 4A regional title win at Elk Grove. The Grenaders (28-8) will meet Fremd in a Barrington sectional semifinal Thursday.

Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

  • Vets deserve mental health care at home May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Letter to the editor: Maryrose Peters thinks Arlington Hts. is being a bit two-faced about Vietnam veterans -- thrilled to cheer them in the Memorial Day parade, but unwilling to house them if they have mental illness. "I can only imagine what it will be like ... after the few hours of lauding them with well deserved honor and appreciation, Arlington Heights will turn some of them back onto the streets without adequate housing and care," she writes.

'Married Alive' takes lightweight approach May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Metropolis Performing Arts Centre's "Married Alive" is a par-for-the-course relationship revue, ably performed. The show juxtaposes two couples: newly wedded idealists Erin (Katie Siri) and Paul (David Hathway) who are determined to make their marriage perfect, and long-married pragmatists Diane (Elizabeth Haley) and Ron (Jerry Mills), who understand perfection is impossible and have settled for a happy marriage instead. Contrasting points of view aside, each couple grapples with essentially the same issues: intimacy, kids, career and communication, the latter of which figures prominently in both relationships.
