  • Schaumburg squeezes out a win at York May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    The elements at York on Thursday afternoon weren't exactly conducive to a pitchers duel. But there were Dukes hurler Louis Alcaraz and his counterpart, Schaumburg's Max Paolicchi, both throwing shutouts through almost 5 innings in the face of a gusty 30-mph wind blowing straight out to left field. Then the floodgates opened — especially for the Saxons. Visiting Schaumburg got only had 6 hits, but 5 of them came in the final two frames as the 10th-seeded Saxons defeated York 4-3 in a Class 4A regional semifinal host by the Dukes in Elmhurst. Schaumburg (22-13) moves on to play St. Charles North at 10 a.m. Saturday in the regional final.

     
  • Kawa, Elk Grove handle York May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
    Michal Kawa describes his jump serve as something that's been "progressive" throughout the season. The Elk Grove senior saw plenty of progress in that phase of the game on Wednesday night. Kawa helped the Grenadiers jump out to a sizable first-set lead, and backed by an energetic home crowd, top-seeded Elk Grove rolled to a 25-14, 25-14 victory over eight seed York in the Elk Grove regional final to earn a spot in Elgin sectional semifinal on Friday. The victory gave Elk Grove its fifth regional title and also secured the program's first 30-win season.

    Neuqua Valley is scorching hot and could make a run like the one that saw the Wildcats finish third at Class 4A state in 2008. Hinsdale South is a No. 2 seed but hasn't had a lengthy postseason since it made the super sectionals in 2004. In Class 3A Glenbard South is trying to turn a strong end to the regular season into a sectional title at home.

    Tessa Kroll couldn't believe the pickle she found herself in.Sailing through five innings with a 7-run lead, York's senior pitcher suddenly was a Lake Park hit from losing it all, the bases loaded in a two-run game. Worse, four Kroll walks had contributed to the trouble.

    The Wheaton United girls lacrosse team made a little history recently.Wheaton went 5-0 in DuPage-Upstate Eight Conference play to win the programs first league title in its seven-year existence. Wheaton scored a 10-9 conference win in overtime against St. Charles and edged Neuqua Valley (10-8) in another league tilt. Those were big victories for us, said Wheaton United coach Charles Solomon. There have always been tough teams in our conference and to be able to beat Neuqua, which is always a very solid team, for the first time in our programs history was a huge step for United lacrosse.

    Jenna Weiner let her practice time away from school help her score the golden goal on Thursday afternoon and send the Stevensons girls soccer team into the elite eight of the Pepsi Showdown. Weiner fired a free kick into the top left corner in the final minute of overtime and ninth-seeded Stevenson defeated seventh-seeded York 5-4 at the Vernon Hills Athletic Center. The Patriots next play top seed Metea Valley (11-1) at Olympic Park in Schaumburg at 3 p.m. Saturday.

    Tessa Kroll knows all about setting high standards for herself, and flirting with perfection. The York senior scored a 35 on her ACT and 2,180 on her SAT, and carries a 4.7 grade point average. Shes already been accepted to Brown, Cornell and MIT and is waiting to hear back from Princeton and Yale. Last Thursday, Kroll was darn near perfection on the softball pitching mound.

    One Alex Caliva swing made up for a game-full of Glenbard North missed opportunities. The Panthers sophomores two-out run-scoring double snapped an eighth-inning tie, Lilly Fecho struck out 14 and No. 10 Glenbard North beat York 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday in Elmhurst. Glenbard North (7-0) went on to sweep, winning the second game 8-0 behind Lindsey Cherrys five-hit, nine-strikeout gem.

    Schaumburgs boys water polo team played in the first game and in the last game at its Saxon invite on Saturday. The opener started at 8 a.m. The finale started at 2 p.m. The Saxons had lots of time to kill in between. They did most of their damage in a hospitality room set up for coaches and officials.

    Hes a keeper in the fall and in the spring. Schaumburg junior Marty Faleni, a goalkeeper for the Saxons soccer team in the fall, has been pretty adept at stopping wet shots as a rookie goalkeeper for the schools boys water polo team. Faleni stymied shot after shot Friday in a pair of victories at the Saxon Invite in the home water. Schaumburg beat York 10-7 and Libertyville 10-6 in the first day of the two-day event.
