The home stands were filled and the crowd was roaring well before York took the field Friday night for its homecoming game against Willowbrook. It didn’t take long for the Dukes to give their fans something more to cheer for, beating the Warriors 42-7.

  • Gold catching up to Silver in WSC Aug 26, 2014 6:59 PM
When it comes to football in the West Suburban Conference, bragging rights have been pretty one-sided. Silver dominates Gold. While the Silver Division teams still hold a decisive edge, this may be the year the Gold starts catching up. Maybe.

  • For York’s Santos, it’s good to be green Jun 12, 2014 12:32 PM
From the moment Anthony Santos put on a York baseball uniform, he was hooked. Hooked not only on the sport or the team, but the entire school. For four years, Santos bled the Dukes’ signature Kelly Green. “They were four great years,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.” As for the Dukes, they’d have been lost without Santos up on varsity the last three years. This senior season in particular, the pitcher and first baseman put the team on his back and carried it to a share of the West Suburban Silver Conference title. Excellence he achieved on the mound, he matched at the plate. The combination made Santos one of the state’s elite two-way players, and has earned him selection as the 2014 Daily Herald DuPage County All-Area baseball captain.

  • Lake Park’s title run ends at 4 May 31, 2014 9:34 PM
One streak was broken, one dynasty rekindled. At Saturday’s Boys Track and Field State Finals at Eastern Illinois University, York unseated four-time defending Class 3A champion Lake Park. Retiring coach Stan Reddel won his second title at York, the program’s fifth and first since 2009.

  • No perfect game, but good enough for Willowbrook May 29, 2014 10:22 PM
Thoughts of a perfect game danced briefly through Jake Cady’s head, but the bulk of his attention remained on the scoreboard. “It crossed my mind a few times, but all I care about it the ‘W,’” he said. Cady got it done, pitching a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks while leading Willowbrook’s baseball team to a 3-2 victory over York in Thursday’s Class 4A York regional semifinals in Elmhurst.

  • York’s Reddel ready for last shot May 28, 2014 4:25 PM
Paulette Reddel teaches first grade at Grace Lutheran School in River Forest, but it sounds like she’d be a good reporter. Her questions are evocative.

  • Lake Park endures some pain for gain May 24, 2014 12:24 AM
Marcus Jegede, a key to Lake Park’s shot at an unprecedented fifth straight boys state track championship, got maximum results from minimum effort. He had little choice. At Friday’s Class 3A Lake Park boys sectional in Roselle, Jegede was on a crash diet of one jump per event to save a testy hamstring that had allowed him to long jump at only two meets this spring, and no triple jumps.
