    On an offensive rebound and putback with 1:35 left before halftime on Tuesday, Juwan Starks became West Aurora's all-time leading scorer. The 6-foot-3 senior forward finished with a team-high 17 points for a four-year career total of 1,627 points, and he would have traded in a dozen of them to get past Proviso East on Tuesday night. At the Class 4A Hinsdale Central supersectional, Proviso East took a 19-12 lead after a quarter and held on, defeating the Blackhawks 62-51 to advance to Friday's state semifinals against Rockford Auburn, a 49-43 winner over Warren in DeKalb.

    Making its wrestling dual-team postseason debut, South Elgin faced a daunting task trying to neutralize the powerful lineup defending Class 3A champion Glenbard North assembled. Storm senior Cody Pych gave South Elgin an early 4-0 lead with his major-decision win at 182 pounds at the West Aurora sectional Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Storm, the opening win for South Elgin only awoke the sleeping giant. The Panthers (16-4) responded by capturing the final 13 weight classes in succession to throttle the Storm 72-4.

    Mark Shealy made his sectional nightmare go away, and in just under four minutes, the Barrington junior gave himself a new memory he will never forget. Shealy, who for the last two weeks has had to think about how close he came to earning a trip downstate, became the man of the night for the Mid-Suburban League champs when he pinned Jonathan Wells of Grant to help settle a dual-team sectional thriller at Wheeling. The 29-18 victory sends the Broncos to the dual-team state tournament. Barrington will face Naperville Central at 9 a.m. Saturday in a state quarterfinal dual at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. The Redhawks defeated Maine West 40-24 Tuesday night in Aurora.

  • Antioch charges downstate in Class 2A Feb 21, 2012 12:00 AM
    To put it plainly, Antioch totally outclassed St. Patrick on Tuesday night at the Class 2A Woodstock dual team wrestling sectional. Starting at 113 pounds, the Sequoits jumped all over St. Patrick as they built a 16-0 lead after four matches. A forfeit win at 138 cut the lead to 16-6, but Antioch (15-15) reeled off five straight victories after that point to build an insurmountable 39-6 lead with four bouts left. With the win in hand, Antioch coach Wilbur Borrero chose to forfeit the final four matches to avoid any chance of injury as the Sequoits posted a 39-30 victory to advance to the Elite Eight on Saturday in Bloomington. Crystal Lake Central defeated Niles Notre Dame 33-28 in the other Woodstock sectional meet to advance to state.
