    A Colorado woman accused of kidnapping her newborn nephew in Wisconsin and abandoning him in freezing temperatures is about to go to trial. Kristen Smith faces one count of kidnapping in federal court. Her trial is scheduled to begin Monday in Madison. She could face life if convicted.

    Authorities say a 65-year-old southern Wisconsin woman has died after a riding lawn mower accident. Rock County Sheriff Robert Spoden says deputies were called to a home Saturday afternoon in the town of Janesville, where they found a woman partially trapped under a small riding lawn mower that was tipped upside down.

    A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis to New York City has landed safely in Milwaukee after it was diverted. Delta spokeswoman Kate Modolo says the crew chose to divert the flight Saturday morning out of an abundance of caution after the pilots detected a smoky odor on board.

    Jerry Van Bladel, a Navy veteran and a resident of Cary, has never had an experience quite like the fishing trip he shared with nearly 130 other veterans. Funded and organized by Bartlett-based nonprofit Take a Vet Fishing, the trip honored the veterans for their service. "I realized that people appreciated us," Van Bladel said.     uthorities say a Green Bay man has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot after shooting at a random car and at sheriff’s deputies on a Marinette County highway. Sheriff’s officials say a couple in the car told investigators a man in a black SUV began shooting at them on Highway 141 near Wausaukee and struck their vehicle.

     
  • Wisconsin mink production up 8 percent last year Jul 25, 2014 7:37 AM
    Wisconsin continues to lead the nation in the production of mink pelts, accounting for one in three U.S. pelts last year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Wisconsin produced 1.13 million mink pelts last year. That was up almost 8 percent from in 2011, the last year for which figures were available.

    International competition begins in Hayward where the very best lumberjacks are gathering. The U.S. Lumberjack World Championships get underway Thursday with log rolling, pole climbing and chopping events. The championships started in 1960. Organizers say it’s a way to acknowledge the rich history of the logging industry across the United States.

     
  • Insurance company compensates wrongly convicted Jul 24, 2014 9:03 AM
    A central Wisconsin man who spent three years in prison for a crime he did not commit has been compensated by his insurance company. The amount of the compensation for Joseph Awe, of Friendship, has not been disclosed. Awe says there’s no way to compensate him for the three years he lost while in prison for arson.

    Two Wisconsin children are recovering after being shot inside a vehicle. A 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the Milwaukee shooting Wednesday night.Deputy Inspector Stephen Basting says the children were in a vehicle being driven by their mother.

     
  • Fourth suspect at large in Milwaukee shooting Jul 23, 2014 8:27 AM
    Authorities are looking for a fourth suspect in a shooting on an interstate in Milwaukee County. Sheriff David Clarke says people in a minivan and another vehicle were shooting at each other in a “running gun battle” on Interstate 43 Tuesday afternoon.

  • Harley sinks as annual shipment outlook cut on slower U.S. Sales Jul 22, 2014 9:45 AM
    Harley-Davidson Inc., the biggest U.S. motorcycle maker, fell the most in almost two years after saying it expects to ship about 9,000 fewer bikes this year. Harley now forecasts shipments of 270,000 to 275,000 this year, compared with an earlier outlook of as many as 284,000. The shares declined 5.3 percent to $63.55 at 10:06 a.m. New York time, after dropping 6.4 percent in their biggest intraday plunge since August 2012.
