  • Eight finalists named for DuPage board vacancy Nov 21, 2014 5:12 PM
    A former Glen Ellyn village president and the town’s village clerk are among eight finalists seeking to replace the late Jerry “JR” McBride on the DuPage County Board. County board Chairman Dan Cronin reviewed applications from 34 candidates interested in the District 4 board seat that’s been vacant since McBride’s death on Oct. 24. That list has since been narrowed down to the eight finalists.

     
  • DuPage judge dismisses Winfield trustee’s lawsuit Nov 21, 2014 2:39 PM
    A DuPage County judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit that a Winfield trustee filed against a local newspaper. Trustee Tony Reyes filed the lawsuit in April against The Winfield Express after the newspaper published an article that referenced a 2004 decision by a West Chicago school board while Reyes was on it. Judge Dorothy French Mallen this week ruled the lawsuit was without merit and ordered Reyes to pay the newspaper’s legal expenses. His attorney says an appeal is likely.

    Illinois authors who have self-published an adult fiction book may enter the second year of the Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project until Monday, Dec. 15. The Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project is being coordinated in collaboration with the Illinois Library Association and Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and is supported by the American Library Association Digital Content Working Group, the Public Library Association (PLA), Illinois Heartland Library System.

    By 1945, at the end of WWII, less than three percent of American military personnel were women. Barbara “Bobbie” Merritt was one of them. A resident of Sedgebrook, a senior living community in Lincolnshire, Bobbie achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer inthe Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving in Arlington, Virginia.

    George Bailey and the magical town of Bedford Falls return for “It’s Wonderful Life.” The holiday classic will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, and Sunday, Dec. 14. Admission is $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Sharing Connection Furniture Bank. Come early and enjoy the preshow music on the Tivoli’s Wurlitzer pipe organ.

    College of DuPage is offering a new honors seminar titled “The Physics of Politics” for the first time in spring 2015. “This class is geared toward students pursuing a broad range of majors, including everything from philosophy to mechanical engineering,” said physics professor Tom Carter. “This combination of significant writing, group projects and basic quantitative analysis will provide opportunities and challenges for everyone.”

    College of DuPage has begun construction of the new Homeland Security Training Center, a 39,714-square-foot facility that includes a state-of-the-art indoor firing range and a call center training lab. This facility is Phase II in the completion of the College’s Homeland Security Training Institute.

  • Help serve the community this Christmas Nov 18, 2014 2:29 PM
    The Humanitarian Service Project of DuPage County is calling for donations of new toys and nonperishable food to support underprivileged children and families through its annual Christmas Offering. It has been putting gifts under the tree for local children in need since 1979. This year, it is projected to serve 350 families with nutritious groceries as well as provide 1600 children and 125 seniors with Christmas gifts.

    Lake County 4-H Teens lead the annual officer training on November 11. Thirty five youth participated in a Parliamentary Procedure Jeopardy game created by Avni Patel, learned the importance of being a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer taught by Maddie Currie, Abby Daniels, Charlotte Roberts and parent volunteer Robbie Roberts.
