But when the 25th Annual McDonald’s Shootout commences at Willowbrook High School Saturday morning, O’Boye’s event will have come full circle. From its humble beginnings on Jan. 11, 1991 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the Northwestern campus, the McDonald’s Shootout has become the marquee event of Martin Luther King weekend, even as more and more events of its kind have popped up around the area and the country.

Capping a comeback from a disappointing pool-play loss four days earlier, Leyden won its second title in three years in Glen Ellyn with a 64-53 victory over West Suburban Gold Conference rival Willowbrook.

    Willowbrook’s boys basketball team has spent the bulk of the season searching for consistency. The Warriors found it in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game against Glenbard West. In a matter of a couple crucial minutes they turned a 5-point deficit into a 6-point lead and eventually finished off a 58-55 victory over the Hilltoppers in the opening round of pool play at the Glenbard West Holiday Tournament.

Rallying from a late fourth-quarter deficit, Downers South finally notched that elusive first win with a 57-54 West Suburban Gold Conference decision over Willowbrook in Villa Park.

    When Willowbrook’s boys basketball team beat Stagg on Nov. 28, the Warriors celebrated a little bit. After three games — and three wins — they’d already eclipsed their entire victory total from last season. “It was funny because when we won our third we were like, ‘Oh, we already beat last year’,” said Warriors coach Chris Perkins. “But our goal wasn’t just to beat last year.”
