Willowbrook Coach Nick Hildreth believes if the Warriors can simply minimize the mistakes of a year ago, they'll be in much better position to return to the postseason. "These seniors saw those playoff runs as freshmen and sophomores, and last year we couldn't do it," Hildreth said. "We had some games slip away, and we know we can't let that happen again."

Schaumburg's history-making season marched forward on Monday as the Saxons added another rare piece of hardware to their program history. For only a third time in program history, and for the first time since 1990, the girls from Schaumburg won a softball regional championship. The Saxons also reached 30 wins for the first time in school history while playing for the final time this season on their home field. Junior Paige Alt ran her record to a sparkling 20-0 by tossing a 6-hitter with 5 strikeouts as top-seeded Schaumburg won its own Class 4A regional with an 8-4 victory over Willowbrook, the No. 8 seed.
Weiss, South Elgin stand tall against Willowbrook

At a lanky 6 feet, 4 inches tall with close-cropped hair, Ryan Weiss bears more than a striking resemblance to a young Nolan Ryan. That's fitting, because that's about how well the South Elgin senior starting pitcher looked Saturday in a 4-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Willowbrook in a Class 4A regional championship baseball game at Wheaton North.

Earlier this year, 25 high schools around DuPage County nominated their best students for the Daily Herald's Academic Team. The result is a list of 48 nominees who all have worked hard to excel in the classroom and have bright futures. Still, there are 10 students who stood out in that group of standouts. They have been named to the 2014-2015 DuPage County Academic Team.
