    Hot dog lovers, rejoice. The long-awaited Portillo's of Elgin is under construction, and is scheduled to open in February at Randall and Bowes roads, according to Sarosh Saher, senior planner for the city.

Owner Noubar Hawe took over the building at 455 Reddington Drive, which was vacant, and kept the name on the awning. The business reopened two weeks ago, near the intersection of Randall and McDonald roads, and already there are regulars excited to see a family-friendly Italian restaurant in their neighborhood.

  • Dominick Pulli opened his sandwich shop, Bubs Subs, on Randall Road in Algonquin last August, and he says business has been great ever since.

Spiros Kulubis’ last visit home, he brought a U.S. flag — that had flown during combat operations in Afghanistan — for his brother, Harry Kulubis, owner of Georgia’s Restaurant in Algonquin. As part of a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, military officials were on hand to help raise the flag in front of the restaurant.
