  • Fremd graduate killed in California motorcycle crash Jul 24, 2014 9:20 PM
    A funeral is planned for this weekend for a 22-year-old Palatine native who died in a California motorcycle crash. Alexander Mackenzie Williams, a Fremd High School graduate, was killed in a two-vehicle crash July 20 about a half-hour north of San Diego.

     
  • Palatine picks Pauly to run softball program Jun 30, 2014 11:47 AM
    Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. We’re very excited about the direction our softball program is headed and the mark Nicole will leave here.” Pauly has a master’s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. A Palatine native, Pauly was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball at Palatine High School. She holds Palatine’s single-season record with a .496 batting average and an overall career average of .460. She was the Daily Herald’s All-Area captain in 2006. On the basketball court, she became the career-leader in steals and is second in career points, and was a member of the All-Area basketball team for the Daily Herald. Pauly played professionally for both the Chicago Bandits and Akron Racers in the National Professional Fastpitch league. She earned All-NPF honors with Akron in 2012.

    Approximately 130 students in the Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology classes at Palatine and Fremd high schools received an opportunity that many don’t experience until college. Those students took an annual trip to a collegiate-level cadaver lab at Rush University.

    The scrapbook of a first-grade teacher at Virginia Lake Elementary School in Palatine received a final item on Monday night to complete Courtney’s English’s high school softball career. The Pirates senior belted a two-out, 2-1 pitch for a 3-run homer to right-center field in the top of the seventh inning to lift the West to a dramatic 8-7 victory over the East in the 21st annual Mid-Suburban League Senior All-Star Softball Game at Barrington’s Fields of Dreams.

    A car can’t go anywhere without fuel. Fremd High School graduates Frank Kranz and Tom Mayer know that to be true after one mechanical mishap dropped them to 31st place in this week’s the Ford/AAA Auto Skills competition at Ford Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

     
  • Fremd graduates aiming for national title in automotive competition Jun 5, 2014 3:02 PM
    About this time last month, Tom Mayer and Frank Kranz weren’t expecting to be in possession of a state championship trophy. Now the two recent Fremd High School graduates have set their sites on an even bigger accomplishment: a national title. Kranz and Mayer, both 17 year olds from Palatine, will represent Illinois as one of 50 two-person teams at the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills national competition June 8-10 in Dearborn, Michigan.

    There was no holding back Mundelein in the Class 4A baseball playoffs at Palatine on Wednesday. With their ace on the mound in Adam Turner and a huge home run from Ryan Hollander, Mundelein was able to get out of the first round with a 3-1 victory over Fremd.

     
  • St. Viator rides out storm, Northtown May 27, 2014 11:34 PM
    It’s off to a Class 3A regional for St. Viator’softball team. The No. 4-seeded Lions (18-14) advanced with a win over No. 13 Chicago Northtown Academy. Lions ace Sam Hogan (14-10) gave up 1 hit with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk as Viator built an 8-0 lead after four innings. The Pumas were batting in the top of the fifth with one out when the rains hit and the game was postponed. The visitors chose not to return to Arlington Heights at a later date, making it a forfeit win according to the IHSA.

     
  • Postseason victory for Rolling Meadows May 26, 2014 9:53 PM
    Rolling Meadows exceeded its seed. The No. 17-seeded Mustangs edged No. 16 Streamwood 25-21, 14-25, 25-16 to earn another match in the boys volleyball postseason, this one against Lake Park on Tuesday as the regional semifinal rounds are contested at Westminster Christian in Elgin.

     
  • VanDixhorn makes his case; Stevenson wins sectional May 24, 2014 6:53 PM
    Ben VanDixhorn made his statement to the boys tennis state tournament committee for a highly sought-after 3-4 seed with a three-set victory over teammate Stefano Tsorotiotis to capture the singles crown in Saturday’s Stevenson sectional, held at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Stevenson won the team trophy, finishing ahead of Libertyville 21-14n Next were Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington (10), with Vernon Hills rounding out the top four with 7 points.

     
  • Softball / Playoff scouting, Northwest May 24, 2014 9:27 PM
    The path to East Peoria for the 2014 IHSA state softball tourney begins today for six area teams who are competing in play-in games for Class 4A regionals. Regional semifinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with most championships on Saturday. One exception is the Cary-Grove regional where the title game is scheduled for Friday.

     
  • Prospect’s Reese strikes again downstate May 24, 2014 9:52 PM
    Prospect senior Erin Reese proved that lightning does strike twice. After hitting a school-record 150 feet in the discus in early April, Reese settled back into the mid-130s for rest of the season. But on a sun-splashed Saturday at the IHSA Class 3A state finals at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium, Reese caught lightning in a bottle for the second time. On her second throw in the finals, Reese unleashed a beauty, hitting 146-01 to propel her to the Class 3A discus title.
