    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

    Mid-Suburban League softball champion Conant opened the state tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Hoffman Estates in the Hawks' Class 4A regional semifinal. Seeded No. 1 in the Barrington sectional, the Cougars (30-3) advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. regional title game against the winner of today's semifinal between No. 8 Hersey and No. 9 Palatine.Senior Briana Cavin (27-2) threw a 6-hitter with 9 strikeouts and she went 3-for-4 with 1 run. Shortstop Allie Bauch was also 3-for-4 with a run teammates while Miranda Cavin, Kim Jacobson, Sarah Thompson, Megan Reff and Barb Linderman had the RBI for Conant. Plus other regional semifinals including softball teams from the northwest suburbs.

    Buffalo Grove senior left-hander Robert Hawkins went a long time before getting his first varsity victory. Now he has four in a row after throwing a 4-hitter to lead the Bison past Wheeling 4-0 in a Class 4A Stevenson regional quarterfinal.

    Wheeling High School will celebrate its rich ethnic diversity with the annual all-school Display of Cultures on Friday, May 25. Throughout the day, students and staff will be treated to exhibits, a fashion show, music and dance of the 23 cultures from which Wheeling students have originated. The public is invited.

  • Wheeling’s about-face continues May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
    What a difference a little over two weeks has made for the Wheeling boys volleyball team. Not that long ago the Wildcats were trying to claw their way back from a disappointing 8-18 start. Now they've won 8 in a row, including an opening match playoff victory. Led by senior Brandon Yacu, who was 21-of-21 from the service line including 6 aces, Wheeling defeated Chicago Amundsen 25-6, 25-9 in the first round of their own hosted regional.

  • Conant success continues May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
    Conant ended its most successful regular season by splitting a doubleheader with New Trier on Saturday in Hoffman Estates. In a battle between two top-seeded sectional teams, the Cougars (30-3) outlasted the Trevians in Game 1 for a 2-1 victory in nine innings. Junior Miranda Cavin singled, went to second on Kim Jacobson's sacrifice and eventually scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Plus other softball games from the northwest suburbs.

    Retiring Schaumburg coach Paul Groot returned to his alma mater and left with 20-20 vision after an 8-0 victory at Wheeling. Max Paolicchi, Matt Brancato and Kevin Sola combined on a 2-hitter as the Saxons won 20 games for the 20th time in Groot's 28-year tenure. Plus more on wins by Prospect, St. Viator and Leyden and a tough doubleheader loss by Hersey.

     
  • Wheeling picks up victory at Evanston May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
    Wheeling's softball team earned it ninth win of the season with a 6-4 win at Evanston on Thursday. The Wildcats were led on offense by Sara Kern (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI), Emily Walker (2-for-4, double) and Anne Janulis (2-for-3, 2 RBI). Kaitlyn DeBusk and Ashley Hafertepe each added RBI for the Wheeling. Katie Quagliano struck out six as the winning pitcher.

    Katie Quagliano called Monday the perfect way for her Wheeling softball team to end its Mid-Suburban East conference schedule. And the sophomore right-hander was perfect in three of the seven innings of her 3-2 win at Hersey. Quagliano retired the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings and gave up her only runs in the sixth while tossing a 6-hitter for Wheeling (8-20, 4-12).

    Fremd didn't leave any room for doubt about clinching a fourth straight Mid-Suburban West baseball title. Lee Breitzman was an out away from a shutout and Grant Dunham had 3 hits and 5 RBI as the Vikings beat Wheeling 17-2 in 5 innings. Hersey wrapped up an outright MSL East title as Mike Danielak and Trevor Haas combined to beat Schaumburg 2-1.

    For the past four seasons, Hersey's Maggie Hogen and Wheeling's Kellie Kuzmanic played against each other in volleyball and basketball in the Mid-Suburban League.But for the next four years, they will wear the same basketball uniform. The seniors have verbally committed to the Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) women's basketball team and coach Brent Brase.

    Pohl, Fremd close out Barrington’s gallant challenge May 13, 2012 12:00 AM
    Eric the closer Pohl finished off another championship for Fremds boys tennis team. Last month, the Vikings sophomore won the final match of the day to help his team outlast rival Barrington to clinch the Mid-Suburban West crown. And on an otherwise dreary Saturday afternoon at Palatine, Pohl brightened the day for all of his teammates with a straight-set victory over Barrington freshman Ishaan Jaglan to clinch the MSL title for Fremd the second straight under coach Matt Duncan. Eric was my No. 1 go-to guy today, said Duncan, who, like his closer wasnt aware that a victory from Jaglan would have elevated the Broncos past his own team. That would have completed a big run for coach John Roncones team when it had seemed all had been lost.
