Why property taxes are up for most of Cook County

Property owners in the northern Cook County suburbs can expect an average increase of about $155 on their property tax bills in the coming year, Cook County Clerk David Orr reports. Wheeling residents could see a much bigger increase, while some in Mount Prospect could see tax reductions.
Ethel Kolerus left imprint on township, Alexian Brothers

The Northwest suburbs has lost a pioneer with the death this month of Ethel Kolerus. She was the first woman to be township supervisor in Cook County, and her leadershp of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center came during a time of great growth. "Ethel wanted this building to be one-stop-shop for residents in need," says Jo Stellato, Wheeling Township's director of finance and administration.

Cook County Clerk David Orr on Monday honored "the best of the best" suburban Cook County poll workers for their dedication, hard work, and depth of election knowledge. Of nearly 10,000 suburban poll workers, about 70 were selected for special recognition and invited to attend the ceremony.
