Hampshire junior Michael Merchut and Whip-Purs' baseball coach John Sarna each said Wednesday that the hardest playoff game is the first one. The Whip-Purs overcame a slow start by scoring four times in the fourth inning — they didn't have a hit before the inning — to defeat No. 5 seed Wheaton Academy, 4-1, in the Class 3A Burlington Central regional semifinals.

The odds were stacked overwhelmingly against the nearest Marmion pursuers Saturday morning and afternoon in Wheaton. The Cadets, unblemished in regular-season Suburban Christian Conference boys tennis dual meets, were seeking a sixth consecutive league championship. Marmion was almost as flawless at St. Francis during the conference tournament, scoring 13 out of a possible 15 points by capturing all three doubles championships and second singles en route to 20 total points.

At a girls track and field invitational, the four relays are worth their weight in gold. Rosary came away with a mini-version of Fort Knox Wednesday at home, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points with three victories and a runner-up result. The Royals' relay dominance, bolstered by consistency in the other 14 events, enabled the squad to capture their first Suburban Christian Conference title in three years with 146.5 points in Aurora.

St. Francis is making it a habit to score early runs on the road this season. It's a pattern Ralph Remus can get used to. "That's a good way to start the game," said the Spartans coach, congratulating his girls on doing do Wednesday. "It's a runs advantage, and it's a psychological advantage to come out like that." The Spartans sure got off the bus swinging Wednesday. St. Francis batted around in a six-run first inning, setting the tone in a 15-6 win at Wheaton Academy.
