Westminster Christian boys basketball coach Bruce Firchau couldn’t fault his team’s effort, but his Warriors simply had no answer for Makur Puou. Mooseheart’s 6-foot-10 junior was a beast, scoring 32 points and grabbing 9 rebounds to lead the Ramblers past Westminster 55-31 Saturday to win the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Rockford Christian Life. Westminster nails down 1A regional crown Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Westminster Christian guard Kinsley Donahue was disappointed that Thursday’s snowstorm pushed the Class 1A Harvest Christian girls basketball regional final to Friday. Even more so for the pumped-up Donahue, as the game began Friday night, she waited even longer being the sixth man in Ken Flickinger’s group. But when Flickinger called for her to settle her teammates down when the Warriors were trailing by 3 points with 1:43 left in the first quarter, Donahue’s role became even more important. Westminster needed her spark off the bench to get the team back in the flow. “I kind of prayed a lot before the game and I feel I kind of got the strength,” said Donahue. “Coach encouraged me to make an effort when I came off the bench to spark something.” Donahue rose to the occasion. Her 13 points and 4 rebounds, including 6 points in the second quarter, helped Westminster fight off Christian Liberty, which hung around in the first half. Freshman Maddie Versluys took care of the rest with a game-high 21 points, including 7 rebounds as top-seeded Westminster grabbed a second-straight regional crown in a 62-43 win over No. 2 Christian Liberty at the Mitchell Swaback Athletic Center in Elgin.

  • Westminster Christian to play for regional title Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The quest for Redbird Arena has officially begun for the Westminster Christian girls basketball team and after a fast-paced, 60-21 regional semifinal win over No. 4 seed Harvest Christian to begin postseason play Tuesday night, it looks as if the Warriors want to be the quickest of any team in Class 1A to make it downstate. Claire Speweik, who had a game-high 15 points to go with 4 steals, scored 8 first-quarter points that helped spark a frantic pace for the Warriors (23-4), who outscored the Lions (7-20) 23-3 and forced 13 turnovers. in the first 8 minutes.

Westminster Christian motivated for postseason Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Talk about being motivated. If you don’t think the Westminster Christian girls basketball team isn’t geared up for the upcoming postseason, then you probably don’t think a Harbaugh is going to win the Super Bowl today. When Seton Academy’s Brittany Mitchell buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give her team a 45-42 win over Westminster in the 2012 sectional final at Willows Academy, the Warriors immediately started thinking about this season. And now all the pieces would appear to be in place for Westminster to make another deep run into the postseason, and the Warriors don’t mince their words — they want to play at Redbird Arena in the Class 1A Final Four on Feb. 22.

Westminster Christian makes it 10 straight Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Westminster Christian girls basketball coach Ken Flickinger wasn't the happiest guy in town with the way his team played defense in the first half Tuesday night. So the Warriors did something about it, and their coach was all smiles by game's end. Westminster held Ottawa Marquette Academy to just 12 points in the final 16 minutes and turned a 1-point halftime advantage into a 20-point win, beating the Class 2A Crusaders 54-34 in nonconference action in Elgin. The win was the Warriors' 10th straight and ran their season record to 21-4. They can tie the school record for wins in a season set by last year's sectional finalist with a win at Keith Country Day in the regular-season finale Friday. Westminster is the No. 1 seed in next week's Class 1A Harvest Christian regional.
