  • Leyden looking forward to more success Aug 23, 2013 4:59 PM
Some key players graduated from last year’s undefeated West Suburban Gold championship squad, but veteran Leyden coach Tom Cerasani is hoping his inexperienced team can quickly come together. The former Schaumburg quarterback, an all-area selection in 1990, graduated two of his own all-area picks from a stingy defense last season. They were Javier Rhoades and and Adam Morrison, who were instrumental in the Eagles allowing just 12 points per game. Morrison finished with 80 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recovers, an interception and a sack. Rhoades, a two-way standout, finished with 45 tackles, 8 sacks and an interception return for a TD while also catching 10 passes for 290 yards and 2 TDs.

  • Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 10:49 PM
Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

  • Logan giving Palatine a leadoff lift Apr 6, 2013 10:14 PM
Last season, Lauren Logan was an all-area catcher who batted No. 3 in the Palatine batting order. But Palatine veteran softball coach Jeff Manz had an eye on Logan's eye. "The reason we moved her to our leadoff hitter was because she has such a good eye," Manz said. "And she is the best contact hitter we have. When she gets on base, good things happen." Logan, who has committed to Missouri-St. Louis, played her leadoff role to perfection on Saturday at The Ballpark at Rosemont. The left-handed hitting senior went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI as the Pirates topped Leyden 9-7.

  • Big numbers continue for Barrington Apr 5, 2013 10:39 PM
Here's a list of numbers for softball fans: 16, 16, 15, 27, 21. No, those aren't your weekly lottery numbers. Those are the number of runs the Barrington softball team has scored in its last five games. So far, the Fillies have been the equivalent of that certain local basketball team that finished second in the Class 4A state finals last month. Yes, the Fillies seem to be scoring runs this spring like the Rolling Meadows girls basketball team was scoring baskets this winter. Barrington's most recent scoring barrage came Friday at the Ballpark in Rosemont where they blanked Leyden 21-0 in five innings.
