    Hersey coach Mary Fendley has guided the Huskies into their share of championship games at the Wheaton North Christmas Tournament.But never did they reach the final game the way they did Friday night. Trailing Lyons Township in the semifinal by 18 points with under 6:30 remaining, the Huskies rallied for a 65-60 overtime triumph.

    Maine West’s all-time leading scorer Brittany Collins showed why she has earned that milestone as the senior collected a game-high 32 points with 12 rebounds to help lead the Warriors to a 50-46 victory in the opening round of the 31st annual Dundee-Crown Charger Classic Girls Tournament. It was Collins’ fourth game of the season with 30 or more points and the Saint Xavier recruit has a double-double in early every game this season.

    Brendan Parker finished with a team-best 18 points to help Schaumburg advance in the winner’s bracket with a 57-48 victory over Brother Rice in the first round of Jack Tosh tournament play at York on Thursday.

    Jessica Hohlweg said the game plan for St. Viator on Monday night was to get the ball inside. The Lions succeeded quite often and Hohlweg was often the beneficiary. The 5-foot-11 junior forward scored a career-high 15 points to help lead the Lions to a 47-38 triumph over Leyden in the first-round game of the 31st annual St. Viator Snowflake Girls Basketball Tournament in Arlington Heights.

    Over the many years Hersey’s girls basketball team has been playing in the Wheaton North Christmas tournament, the Huskies have gained a reputation for always finishing higher than their seed in the 16-team event.This season, the Huskies won’t have a chance to do that. But they would love to equal it. Coach Mary Fendley’s squad, boasting a 10-1 record, is the top seed at Wheaton North followed by Downers Grove North, Willowbrook and West Aurora.

    Proviso East girls basketball coach Ezra PridGeon stressed the importance for his Pirates to play four quarters in every game, regardless of the opponent. “We must play hard every second and every minute of every quarter,” he said. Everything seemed to click for the Pirates on Thursday night in Northlake. With 6-foot senior forward Tia Barlow scoring 14 points and 6-0 junior forward Jasmine Levy reaching double figures with 11 points, Proviso East used a solid all-around effort to defeat the Eagles 69-22 in the West Suburban Gold match.

    Barrington’s girls basketball team ran its record to 8-1 on Tuesday night with a 59-52 victory at Grayslake North. Senior Brooke Gunderson led the Fillies with 14 points while also adding 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.

    Junior Alondra Chavarria scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Leyden to a 44-30 victory over Addison Trail, giving the Eagles the championship of the Addison Trail-Fenton tournament. Chavarria, freshman Autumn McGee (6 points, 5 rebounds) and freshman Artasia Gusman (7 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals) were named to the all-tourney team.

    Wheeling junior Deanna Kuzmanic, who received all-state recognition following her sophomore season, scored a career-high 38 points as the Wildcats posted a 63-53 victory over the host team of the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament on Saturday night.

    Jack Riedy couldn’t lose Tuesday night when he was watching the Prospect-Palatine girls volleyball match. The Notre Dame freshman, in town from South Bend for semester break, saw his dad Mike coaching the Knights and his sister Caitlin setting for the Pirates. Jack was there with his mom, Maria, and grandparents Mike and Pat. “I don’t think a lot of them were rooting for me,” joked Mike Riedy, whose Knights won the Mid-Suburban League crossover 25-21, 25-22 at Palatine.

    In a nonconference girls volleyball match on Wednesday night, Leyden posted a 25-23, 25-20 victory over Maine West. Leading the Eagles’ attack was senior outside hitter Kelly Murphy, who put down 7 kills.

    Hersey’s girls volleyball team remained in first place in the Mid-Suburban East with 25-19 21-25 25-19 victory on Tuesday night. The Huskies improved to 12-9 and 6-1 as Liz Fuerst (10 kills), Courtney Stedman (8), Gabri Olhava (4) and Caity Strozewski (2) led the attack. Hersey leads Buffalo Grove by one match with three to play in the East.

    Elk Grove girls volleyball coach Stephanie Kezios had never been more proud of her players than Tuesday night. The Grenadiers ended one of the longest winning streaks in Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball history on Tuesday when they defeated defending Mid-Suburban League champion Hersey 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 in Elk Grove. Junior Amber Lindfors put down 9 kills and senior McKenzie Jordan added 7 as the Grens ended a 53-game winning streak by Hersey in the MSL East that dated back to the fall of 2007.

    Junior Amber Lindfors (6 kills, 2 blocks) and senior Melissa Solorio (3 kills, 1 block) led the attack for Elk Grove which defeated host Leyden 25-17, 25-18 in the nonconference girls volleyball match. Kerry Souder handed out 11 assists and also had a kill for the Grens (6-8).

  • Schaumburg wins thriller after honoring Conant’s Scholten Sep 17, 2013 11:10 PM
    It was a victory the Schaumburg girls volleyball team will not soon forget and a night Conant coach Peggy Scholten will never forget. In a tense Mid-Suburban West match, the host Saxons outlasted the Cougars 25-22, 23-25, 26-24. For Scholten, the festivities began even before the match as the Saxons honored the retiring coach for her 37 years of service to the league and the area.
