    With only three seniors on her roster, Hoffman Estates softball coach Lindsey Hamma has one of her younger teams in 10 seasons. But that hasn’t stopped the youthful Hawks from starting out 2-0. Victory No. 2 came on Saturday and it took only five innings, thanks to senior second baseman Caitlyn Farina’s one-out 2-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

    It seemed as if Willowbrook’s boys basketball players needed to let the moment sink in, which is understandable. None of them were alive the last time the Warriors won a conference championship. Some of their coaches weren’t, either. When history finally did hit the players after Friday’s 67-62 victory over visiting Leyden, they sprinted to their massive student section and started the celebration.

    Twenty six in a row. That’s the Mid-Suburban West winning streak the Fremd girls basketball team will carry into the 2015-16 season after completing a 10-0 run for the second straight season on Friday night. Haley Gorecki (18 points), Bryana Hopkins (13), Briana Lewis (12) and Julia Wacker (10) all reached double figures in the state-ranked Vikings’ 68-33 triumph over visiting Palatine. Fremd (22-4) has not lost a MSL West game since Schaumburg defeated the Vikings 46-37 three years ago.

    Haley Gorecki scored 15 points and became only the second player in Fremd girls basketball history to reach 2,000 points on Tuesday night when the state-ranked Vikings rolled past visiting Hoffman Estates 74-30. The Vikings also clinched their sixth straight Mid-Suburban League title under coach Dave Yates. They will play for the MSL crown a week from Wednesday at either Prospect or Hersey. Gorecki’s 2000th point came on a layup late in the second quarter.

    In describing his team’s 68-40 win over visiting Leyden on Tuesday night, Schaumburg girls basketball coach Curtis Goodwin said his Saxons got off to a slow start and then picked up their energy. He could have been describing the overall season. After beginning 4-7, the surging Saxons have won six of their last eight games and three straight to climb above .500 at 10-9.

    More than 700 students participated in Saturday’s Future Business Leaders of America Northern Area Conference in Wauconda. Wauconda High School hosted the event which also saw more than 300 business community members involved in judging competitions, presenting workshops or volunteering.

    Leyden’s girls basketball team dropped a 64-49 West Suburban Gold decision to Willowbrook in Villa Park on Thursday. Senior guard Alondra Chavarria led the Eagles (6-10) with a game-high 26 points while sophomore guard Artasia Gusman added 14.

    Rolling Meadows’ girls basketball team improved to 14-5 on Tuesday night with a 48-42 nonconference victory over Niles West in Skokie. The Mustangs were led by sophomore guard Kyra Spiwak, whose 19 points included 11-of-14 free throws.

    Conant’s girls basketball team remained one game out of first place in the Mid-Suburban West by defeating host Barrington 49-36 on Saturday night. The Cougars used balanced scoring to improve to 12-2 and 3-1 in the MSL West behind five-time defending champ Fremd (4-0).

    By the time it was Bobby Alexander’s turn in the spotlight, the Conant star had already watched a trio of teammates before him seal the Cougars’ fourth consecutive Leyden Invite crown, allowing the standout 138-pounder to focus solely on winning his own fourth straight title as well. And after Alexander’s strong performance over Mousa Jodeh of Oak Forest, the Cougars had built an insurmountable 50-point lead over the powerful Class 2A Oak Forest contingent before running up the final score with three more individual titles to lift the crown going away with 262.5 points.

    A flawless first round helped put Barrington’s wrestling team in good position, and the Broncos managed to hold on to that early lead throughout Day 1 of the 60th annual Berman Holiday Classic on Monday at Palatine High School. Dave Udchik’s team went 14-0 to open the state’s oldest wresting tournament before watching a big lead shrink to hard-charging Class 2A state power Oak Forest.

    One day of resiliency rolled into two for Leyden’s boys basketball team. Saturday night it allowed the Eagles to hoist the biggest hardware at the Glenbard West Holiday Classic. Capping a comeback from a disappointing pool-play loss four days earlier, Leyden won its second title in three years in Glen Ellyn with a 64-53 victory over West Suburban Gold Conference rival Willowbrook.

    Hersey coach Mary Fendley could not recall in her 16 seasons losing two prominent players to injury (senior captains Annie Korff and Juliette Vainisi) during the same week. First, Vainisi suffered a dislocated elbow at practice and then Korff went out of Friday’s Wheaton North tournament game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury ankle. The young Huskies still got the result they were after, a 47-39 victory over Glenbard South.

  • Glenbard North uses 3-point barrage to beat Leyden Dec 23, 2014 10:33 PM
    The last few games there’s been a sense of improvement with Glenbard North’s boys basketball team. The proof came Tuesday when the Panthers rained down a dozen 3-pointers on Leyden. The perimeter barrage from five different players helped Glenbard North notch its first win of the season with a 54-49 decision over the Eagles in second-round pool-play action from the Glenbard West Holiday Classic in Glen Ellyn.

    Schaumburg’s girls basketball team recovered smartly from an opening-round loss in the Wheaton North tournament to defeat Willowbrook 47-30 on Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons held a 1-point lead at the break but gradually pulled away in the second half outscoring the Warriors 29-13. Schaumburg’s defense limited Willowbrook to 1 free throw in the third quarter. Leading the charge for the Saxons were Tatiana Doroskin (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Jada Blackwell (14 points, 7 rebounds).

    Peggy Blenner said her husband Tom would have loved Monday’s girls basketball game that went down to the wire at St. Viator’s Cahill Gymnasium. The St. Viator community showed its love to the late Tom Blenner before the game with a special tribute to the longtime Lions assistant girls basketball coach who died earlier this month. St. Viator athletic director Marty Jennings announced that the Snowflake Classic has been renamed the Tom and Megan Blenner Holiday Invitational. Tom’s daughter Megan, a former St. Viator standout athlete, died this past summer. “We were excited to be able to rename the tournament after Tom and Megan,” said St. Viator girls basketball coach Paul Missavage. “And we were really excited that Tom’s wife and daughters (Kelly and Jamie) were here tonight. That was awesome.” The type of intense game that Peggy said Tom would have loved ended with senior Kayne Stanley’s 2 pressure free throws with 43.3 seconds left proving to be the difference in the Lions’ 44-43 triumph in the first round of the tournament.
