  • Streamwood ends West Chicago’s playoff hopes Oct 18, 2014 10:17 PM
West Chicago drove the length of the field for a touchdown early in Saturday’s Upstate Eight River game, but Streamwood’s defense never let it happen again in a 28-8 victory at Millennium Field. Hungry to earn a fourth win and stay in the playoff race, West Chicago mounted an impressive opening drive. The Wildcats marched 70-yards in 16 plays and ate 7:32 off the clock.

  • St. Charles North takes 2nd at own invite Oct 11, 2014 9:12 PM
For the past two weeks, St. Charles North’s girls swim team has done some serious training without any competitive interruptions. The North Stars went a midseason fortnight without dual meets or invitationals. That training-only period ended Saturday when the North Stars hosted the 15th annual St. Charles North Invitational, and they showed the hard work is paying off with a second-place finish to Neuqua Valley.

  • St. Charles N. wins title, but Batavia surprises field Oct 8, 2014 7:42 PM
Batavia senior Lauren Anderson really had no idea when she sat down at the scorer’s table Wednesday what her round of 90 would mean to her team. But when she found out she was all smiles, as was the entire Bulldogs’ contingent. For the first time since winning back-to-back regional titles in 2008 and 2009 and a runner-up regional finish in 2010, Batavia will play as a team in the sectional.

  • Geneva tops West Chicago to halt mini skid Oct 7, 2014 9:09 PM
Geneva already was on its way to an Upstate Eight River Division win over West Chicago Tuesday night when senior Kelsey Wicinski stepped to the service line midway through Game 2. With her grandma, aunt, cousin and a good neighbor friend in the stands cheering her on, the Maryland-bound libero added an exclamation point to the straight sets win, firing 3 aces in a 4-point run to open up an 8-point spread on the Vikings’ way to a 25-19, 25-14 victory.

  • Another reason for Batavia to celebrate Oct 3, 2014 11:19 PM
Batavia’s football players were in a celebratory mood after Friday’s 49-0 victory at West Chicago. And who can blame them? After dropping their season opener 40-38 to Oswego in August, the Bulldogs (5-1) have been on a roll. The defending Class 6A state champions notched their fifth consecutive win on a frigid evening behind a stout defense that didn’t allow a first down until 5:51 remaining in the third quarter and an efficient offense that racked up five rushing touchdowns.

  • Neuqua Valley, St. Charles East perfect in UEC Oct 1, 2014 7:18 PM
St. Andrews’ reputation for its greens being the last line of defense was on ample display for the twin divisions of the Upstate Eight Conference golf tournament Wednesday. But the speed, vastness and treacherous undulations of the greens did not stop Neuqua Valley and St. Charles East from completing flawless seasons at the boys championships in West Chicago.

  • Glenbard East focused on winning Oct 1, 2014 4:24 PM
If Bartlett enters Friday’s football game in Streamwood as Glenbard East coach John Walters believes it will — looking to “slug it out” — it’s got a taker. Glenbard East’s 28-27 loss in overtime against Waubonsie Valley was not a moral victory. It left a bitter taste. “I think last week not getting the ballgame really fueled their fire,” Walters said. “We’ve got a hungry, not-content football team.”

Bing Singhsumalee capped her extraordinary four-year regular season at Waubonsie Valley with yet another superlative round of golf Monday afternoon in West Chicago. The Warriors' defending Upstate Eight Conference champion hit all 18 greens in regulation, touring St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in 1-under par on each nine. The resulting 69 by the reigning Class AA state runner-up powered Waubonsie Valley to a 321 total as Kayla McHale and Arushi Singh complemented the championship performance with fifth- and sixth-place scores of 79 and 81.

  • West Chicago fends off Larkin rally Sep 27, 2014 12:17 AM
It was West Chicago’s ball with 8 minutes left and the game tied at 20-20 after Larkin had scored on its last two possessions. West Chicago had fumbled the ball away its last time on offense and needed a spark to get its attack going again. Enter Danny Lazzerini. Lazzerini gained 59 yards on 6 carries on the final scoring drive and eventually pounded the ball into the end zone for a touchdown and once again for a 2-point conversion to untie the game and give the Wildcats a 28-22 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory over Larkin at Memorial Field in Elgin Friday night.

Pancho Correa made one of those special plays that triggered a thunderous response from the West Chicago fans Tuesday night at home against St. Charles East. Unfortunately for the Wildcats the celebration didn’t last for long as St. Charles East answered with the go-ahead goal 33 seconds later. The Saints would never trail again in Tuesday’s 4-2 Upstate Eight River victory.
