Downers Grove South ousts West ChicagoFeb 17, 2014 12:00 AM
A sluggish offense that plagued West Chicago much of this season reared its ugly head again Monday night, but that’s not to say the Wildcats went down without a big fight. At Monday’s Class 4A regional opener at Wheaton North, No. 13 seed Downers Grove South blanked No. 20 West Chicago in the third quarter on its way to a 31-25 victory. The Mustangs (9-15) led 24-15 after three quarters and looked in control with a 26-15 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Wildcats rallied to get within 4 despite missing four free throws down the stretch.

  • Glenbard North sends 7 to stateFeb 15, 2014 12:00 AM
With 12 out of 14 wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament, and 10 of them winning the sectional, Oak Park-River Forest continued it run of dominance Saturday at the Leyden sectional in Franklin Park. But that did not deter wrestlers from other schools from flexing muscles of their own. Glenbard North was able to qualify seven of the 11 athletes it sent to Leyden, with Jared Cortez (132 pounds) and Jon Marmolejo (126) winning their weight class. Kirk Johansen (106), Austin Gomez (113), Patrick Augustyn (120) Colton Wegner (170) all finished third with Luke Greenberg (195) qualifying and finishing fourth in his weight class for the Panthers.

Naperville Central feeling goodFeb 13, 2014 12:00 AM
A handful of boys basketball teams can make an argument for being the best in the Class 4A East Aurora sectional. There’s no debating the hottest team. Naperville Central solidified that honor with last week’s 57-56 DuPage Valley Conference victory at West Aurora, a win sealed by Ryan Antony’s late 3-pointer. If the Redhawks (17-5) beat Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday, they’ll be riding a nine-game winning streak into sectional seeding.

Another regional crown for Glenbard North Feb 8, 2014 12:00 AM
Glenbard North's Jon Marmolejo and Larkin's Duke Bogicevic entered the 126-pound championship match of the Class 3A South Elgin wrestling regional Saturday with a combined 81-2 record. The match wasn't much of a contest. Marmolejo dominated Bogicevic and won by fall 43 seconds into the third period. Marmolejo was leading 14-1 at the time. “My goal was to pin him, obviously,” said Marmolejo, a senior. “I knew he was going to come out strong. I just had to wear him out eventually. The pin came along.” Marmolejo's title was one of eight individual championships for the Panthers, who had wrestlers in 12 of the 14 title matches. Glenbard North won the team title with 263.5 points, easily distancing itself from St. Charles East (182). Geneva (117) was third followed by South Elgin (103.5) and Bartlett (79.50). The regional title is the 24th in program history for the Panthers.

  • West Chicago avenges loss to South Elgin Feb 7, 2014 12:00 AM
It is one thing to say threes were absolutely wild for West Chicago in its 90-63 Upstate Eight Valley clinic of South Elgin Friday night. It’s another thing if you want to revise a TV show lyric and say “where the threes are theirs and theirs and Bibbs, Three’s Company, too.” It was more than a company of threes for the Wildcats, as John Konchar notched his first career triple-double of 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, the Wildcats were 11 of 22 from 3-point range and West Chicago (13-9, 5-6) scored 30 points in the third quarter rout where they shot 10 of 16.
