    More than halfway through the season, it’s no secret that Geneva’s height is a tough matchup. But just because the secret is out doesn’t mean it’s easy to stop. The Vikings got off to a hot start against West Chicago and turned it into a 63-36 win against the Upstate Eight River opponent on Friday in West Chicago.

    The odds seemed to be stacked against the Elgin boys basketball team in the final seconds of its home game against West Chicago on Thursday night. For the third time in the game the Maroons had squandered a lead and allowed the Wildcats to tie the game with 46 seconds left. The Maroons were also without their leading scorer Lavion Baldwin, who had a game-high 26 points before departing with leg cramps midway through the fourth quarter. Not to mention the Maroons were trying to fight off the enigma of a 7-game losing streak.

    More than 700 students participated in Saturday’s Future Business Leaders of America Northern Area Conference in Wauconda. Wauconda High School hosted the event which also saw more than 300 business community members involved in judging competitions, presenting workshops or volunteering.

    The Mike Coleman Memorial Invitational isn’t just another meet on the schedule for the Bartlett/Streamwood co-op boys swim team. Sure, it was a home meet, but there’s a lot more to it for the Sabrehawks. Its namesake was a former team MVP and record holder in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay, who passed away in 2011. That’s why the past couple of weeks of training were dedicated solely to racing well against a slate of formidable competition. That the Sabrehawks did, finishing fourth with 63 points, behind repeat champion Plainfield, which won eight of the 10 events and finished with 155 points.

     
  • Lake Zurich outduels Grayslake North at Palatine Jan 17, 2015 6:00 PM
    They saved the best wrestling meet for last Saturday at the Palatine megaduals. Trailing Grayslake North 25-9 with six matches to go, Lake Zurich made a dramatic late comeback to capture an exciting 32-28 nonconference victory over the Knights and cap off a 3-0 day. The Bears (15-6) opened the day with a lopsided 54-15 victory over West Chicago (13-14), before posting a similar 57-18 win over short-handed St. Charles North (3-12) in the second round. Despite also being at less than full strength, Carmel (6-13) managed to go 2-1 on the day, as the Corsairs fell to Grayslake North (12-9) 48-24, before beating West Chicago 35-30 and nipping St. Charles North 27-26 on a forfeit victory in the last match.

    After letting what it thought was a potential win slip through its fingers at Bartlett Tuesday night, the Streamwood girls basketball team was determined to right the ship Wednesday against West Chicago. And that the Sabres did, overcoming an early 8-2 deficit to run away with the Wildcats, 46-29, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game at Streamwood.

    Christian Brunner has a simple plan for the remainder of the wrestling season. “My goal is to be undefeated and a state champion,” the Dundee-Crown junior said on Saturday afternoon after dominating the 195-pound class of the 36th Annual Newbill Invitational at Geneva Saturday afternoon. The Chargers’ standout, the reigning Class 3A state runner-up at 182 pounds, terminated his championship match against Geneva senior Austin Chaon with his third near-fall late in the final period to secure a technical fall.
