Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Naperville Central gets back on track against West Chicago Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Naperville Central’s pregame Senior Night ceremony left at least a few of the six Redhawks seniors in tears. The team’s touching postgame program — when each senior took a turn addressing their families, friends and teammates — brought more tears mixed with plenty of laughter. The 32 minutes in between gave Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum hope that his team is prepared for a Class 4A playoff run as the Redhawks rolled to a 67-37 DuPage Valley Conference victory over West Chicago in Thursday night’s regular-season finale.

Glenbard North snares 13th straight regional title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Toughness matters in wrestling, which partly explains why host Glenbard North secured its 13th straight regional title Saturday and advanced 10 individuals to next week’s Class 3A sectional. Seven Panthers competed in championship matches Saturday afternoon. Six wrestled their way to individual titles, thereby lifting Glenbard North (222 points) to the team title ahead of Wheaton North (183.5) and St. Charles East (174.5). “I thought we wrestled pretty tough,” Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn said. “We wanted the whole team to contribute points and we needed everybody — even if they weren’t seeded as well — to score points and everybody did. We knew it would be really close with St. Charles (East) and Wheaton North. We knew it would be a battle and I thought we stepped up.”

15 in a row for Glenbard North Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Johnny Gosinski etched his name among DuPage Valley Conference immortals Saturday in Carol Stream. Johnny Gosinski etched his name among DuPage Valley Conference immortals Saturday in Carol Stream. When the Glenbard North 132-pound wrestler put the finishing touches on his 7-1 victory in the championship match over West Chicago junior Robert Svestka, Gosinski became the sixth athlete in league history to become a four-time league champion. As a team, the conference should consider permanently retiring its championship trophy after the host Panthers extended their remarkable streak of consecutive titles to 15.

Bartlett’s Whitaker joins 1,000 club Jan 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Lance Whitaker wasn't in on the secret his teammates, coaches and parents kept from him, but he was long overdue for it. The UIC-bound guard was 20 points shy of eclipsing the 1,000 point milestone for his prep career heading into Wednesday night's game against West Chicago and Hawks' head coach Jim Wolfsmith, Whitaker's parents — whom Wolfsmith called days prior to notify — nor Whitaker's teammates said anything about it. For a minute, with only 5 points in the first half during Bartlett's 63-41 nonconference win, it looked as if Whitaker would have to wait until another night. But with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter in a game well-in-hand for the Hawks, Whitaker drove baseline left, spun away from the hoop into the lane, veered back inside and laid it off the glass for points 1,000 and 1,001 and the secret was out as he poured in 16 points in the second half for the achievement.
