Former W. Aurora student drops lawsuit over expulsion May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
A former West Aurora High School student, who sued the school district earlier this year arguing he was unfairly expelled after a teacher confiscated his phone in 2009, had decided not to fight the diistrict. An attorney for Alexander Contini voluntary dismissed the lawsuit, according to court records.

More evidence obtained in slaying of West Aurora studentApr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Search warrants recently included in court records in the Jan. 31 murder of Abigail "Aby" Villalpando show that authorities have recovered more evidence against the three men charged in her death. Some of the items include garbage bags with burned holes in them, a hammer and bloody clothing, according to search warrants in Kane County court records.

Seven years after Illinois lawmakers passed a law intended to curtail big pension-boosting pay hikes for retiring educators, some local school districts still are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in penalties to the state for giving such raises. Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 paid nearly half a million dollars in penalties to the state in the 2011-2012 school year.

The Health Occupations Students of America students from West Aurora High School earned 20 state championships recently at the state leadership conference. In all, 33 West Aurora students were national qualifiers; seven were elected to state offices and 102 finished in the top 10 in the state.

Local districts voting next week on online charter schools Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
The organizers behind a proposed online charter school Friday released a 1,018-page answer to the questions posed by members of the 18 school districts that have to vote on the request. Several of the boards, including Geneva and Kaneland, are due to vote on the proposal as soon as Monday.

A judge rules that a lawsuit filed against Aurora School District 129 Superintendent James Rydland and other school offiicals by a student who was sexually abused by a former band director should be put on hold the Kane County State's Attorney's Office conducts a criminal investigation.

West Aurora High School will have a new, permanent principal next school year, as the board hired Charles Hiscock Monday night. He will replace the school's two interim co-principals, who have supervised the school since the summer of 2011.

Aurora police documents detail events that led up to the death last month of Abigail Villalpando, an 18-year-old senior at West Aurora High School. She was hanging out with two male friends Jan. 31 when one of the teens attacked from behind, hitting her seven times in the head with a hammer, documents show. Three men are charged in connection with the murder, the city's first since late 2011.
