    A perfect final round led to a perfect ending for St. Charles East on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Valesh and Isaiah Vela inspired five consecutive championships beginning at 132 pounds, and along with Anthony Rubino’s crown at 113 to start things off, the Saints won all six of their finals to lift the Upstate Eight Conference trophy for a second straight year.

Sam Carani finished with 17 points and Robert Kleczynski had 13 points. “Give IMSA credit. They had a game plan and played well. We didn’t come out ready to play,” said Westminster Christian coach Bruce Firchau.

    Harvest Christian 42, Christian Liberty 22: Kylee Knox led Harvest Christian (11-8) to a victory against Christian Liberty Saturday in a nonconference game that was scheduled after the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament was canceled due to the weather. Knox had 25 points, including a 6-for-6 free throw performance. Harvest Christian 52, Luther North 49: The Lions (11-8) also defeated Luther North. Kylee Knox led Harvest Christian with 24 points. Rachel Oostdyk finished with 12 points and Morgan Lockwood added 11 points. Grayslake Central 39, Hampshire 33: The Whip-Purs (7-13, 2-7) suffered a loss to Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opponent Grayslake Central Saturday. Sara Finn led Hampshire with 9 points, while Tricia Dumoulin contributed 8 points. Hersey 55, Cary-Grove 29: Katie Barker led the Trojans (13-9) with 12 points during nonconference competition against Hersey. St. Edward 35, Rosary 34: Katie Swanson helped lead the Green Wave (13-7, 5-2) to victory in Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division play Saturday. Swanson (12 points) made a free throw with 6.6 seconds left in the game to put St. Edward up by one. Casey Gredzieleski finished with 8 points for St. Edward. St. Charles North 67, Larkin 47: The Royals (7-14, 2-7) suffered an Upstate Eight Conference River Division loss Saturday. Marlee Kyles led Larkin with 19 points, while Quixmia Washington (14 points) and Victoria Patterson (10) also contributed. Postponements: Dundee-Crown’s scheduled FVC Valley game at McHenry was postponed due to a contract mix-up, and Burlington Central’s Big Northern East game at Genoa-Kingston was postponed due to the weather.

    When it comes to crunchtime in big games, Division I athletes have a tendency to shine — even if the game is in a sport different from the one said athlete will be playing in college. South Elgin senior standout Savanah Uveges, who will play soccer on scholarship at Nebraska, proved again she’s a pretty good basketball player, too, on Saturday as she led her team to a thrilling 47-43 come-from-behind win over U-46 rival Bartlett in a key Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division girls basketball game at South Elgin.

    St. Charles East 84, Streamwood 54: The Sabres (2-21, 0-8) were equals with East in the first quarter of the Upstate Eight River matchup but the Saints outscored Streamwood by 30 in the final 3 quarters to notch the road win. Cole Seger was the high man with 19 points for the Sabres. Antonio Harris added 11. North Shore 70, Elgin Academy 47: Dietrich Robinson scored 32 points on 13 shots and secured 10 rebounds for a double-double, but it was not enough to garner the Hilltoppers a nonconference win.

    Trailing by 5 points in overtime, the Metea Valley boys basketball team got a huge boost from Marquell Oliver in the Mustangs’ rematch against South Elgin. The Mustangs, who won the first game between the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division teams, got 12 points from Oliver in the extra period to earn a 68-64 win on Friday night in South Elgin. Metea Valley (12-8, 4-4) has now won 4 of its last 5 games, and Oliver finished with a game-high 24 points.

    Batavia 70, Larkin 40: Batavia was able to remain perfect on the season in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division at the expense of Larkin, which fell for the fourth time in its last five games. Playing at home for the first time in almost two weeks, the Royals (7-13, 2-6) were unable to generate their offense early and late, netting just 13 points in the first and fourth quarters combined. Senior Alyssa McGhee led the Royals with 13 points, including 3 3-pointers, all coming in the third quarter. Victoria Patterson added 11 points for the Royals, while Marlee Kyles put in 10. Geneva 68, Elgin 39: While not the result that was hoped for by Elgin, there was improvement by the Maroons (6-13, 1-4), who only scored 19 points combined the last two times when traveling to Geneva. “That’s the best we’ve played there, we just have to keep improving every game,” Maroons coach Dr. Nick Bumbales said. Junior Abby Pierre-Louis was able to take charge on offense, hitting 6 shots and leading all scorers with 15 points, but it was not enough to counter a balanced Vikings attack, which saw 12 different players score. Seniors Maggie Powers and Melanie Berg along with sophomore Alisha Panthier each added 6 points for the Maroons.

  • Kaneland’s Johnson excited to return to St. Edward Jan 23, 2014 9:42 PM
    A player from one of the most successful eras in St. Edward boys basketball history returns to his alma mater as a head coach on Tuesday when 1997 graduate Brian Johnson directs his Kaneland Knights against the Green Wave. Johnson played for coach Kevin Dix on the last two St. Edward teams to win sectional titles. He and teammates Muamer Karamovic, Jeff and Jason Hopkins, Brad Hartmann, Peter Aydt, Mark Murphy and Adam Bruhn won a Class A sectional in 1995-96. That team eventually fell to Mendota in the NIU supersectional at Evans Fieldhouse, 77-64.

    At age 15, Breje Whitt was playing onstage with a nationally renowned Christian rock band. At 17, the Elgin teen started his own DJ, sound and lighting company. Where he goes next is anyone’s guess, but one thing is for sure — music is going to be his life. “Music is what I want to do, but I don’t know where it’s going to go,” said Breje, a senior at Westminster Christian School in Elgin.

    McHenry 54, Jacobs 33: With over 70 percent of their points, and 80 percent of their baskets, coming from behind the 3-point line, and led by Alyssa Lach, the Golden Eagles (4-17, 2-6) looked to get their struggling offense going at home in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game. Unfortunately for Jacobs, the Warriors’ defense was ready for the attack, holding Jacobs to just 4 points inside the arc and, under 40 points for the ninth time this year. Lach had 8 points in the game thanks to a pair of 3s in the fourth, while Nita Williams and Tiffany Frighetto both finished with 6 points. Prairie Ridge 55, Crystal Lake South 50: Down 6 going into the fourth quarter, the Gators (12-8, 4-3) could not muster the comeback, falling to the Wolves for the second time this season, this time on the road in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division. Chanel Fanter led all Gators with 17 points. Both teams made 20 baskets on the night, but the Wolves were able to shot 45 percent from beyond the arc, while Crystal Lake South shot only 8 percent. Kianna Clark finished the night with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Sara Mickow ended with 9 points and grabbed 12 boards for Crystal Lake South.

    It’s not your typical science fair. Elgin Area School District U-46’s upcoming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Expo will give students a chance to explore their natural curiosities, whether it’s building an electric car or developing a new kind of fertilizer. The fifth annual STEM Expo is April 5 at South Elgin High School. The first kickoff event is 6 to 8:15 p.m. Thursday at Gail Borden Library Main Branch, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

    St. Edward 78, Guerin 55: The Green Wave (16-4) were able to bounce back after a loss, winning big over Guerin in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover game on the road. Up by just 7 at the half, the Green Wave used a big offensive outburst from Nick Duffy in the third along with a stifling defense and was able to expand the lead to 19 points going into the fourth quarter. Duffy scored 8 of his 14 points in the third period. Joseph French and Davontae Elam each went big for St. Edward, scoring 15 points each in the eventual 23-point victory. Hoffman Estates 51, Streamwood 42: Despite a 19-point performance from senior Jacob Siewert, the Sabres (2-19) were unable to get the help needed at home, falling in a nonconference matchup. Siewert put 3 3-pointers through the net, 2 in the third quarter alone, to try and spark an offense that had 17 baskets and only went to free-throw line 7 times. Junior Cole Seger added 11 points for the Sabres.

    Harvest Christian girls basketball coach Kelly Friestad knew it would take a monumental effort by her team to beat talent-laden Westminster Christian Monday afternoon in the final round of the Elgin City Classic. But Friestad couldn’t help but be proud of the way her team fought like the Lions they are. Westminster continued its two-year dominance of the Elgin City Classic with a 60-41 win over Harvest. but instead of wilting after falling behind 23-7 at the end of the first quarter and 35-15 at halftime, the visiting Lions fought to the bitter end.

    Hampshire 68, Woodstock North 56: Hampshire (7-10, 3-1) came out on top of Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opponent Woodstock North with the help of Ryan Cork’s 17 points. Marian Central 67, Streamwood 61: Marian Central defeated the Sabres (1-17) in two overtimes, while competing in the MLK Shootout at Lake Zurich. Jacob McGlone led Streamwood with 17 points, while Jacob Siewert scored 15 points. Cole Seger (13 points) and Antonio Harris (9) also contributed for the Sabres. Cary-Grove 48, McHenry 45: The Trojans beat Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opponent McHenry in overtime. Jason Gregoire led all scorers with 19 points, while Nick Franz (10 points) and Tyler Szydlo (9) also did well offensively for Cary-Grove. Rockford Auburn 71, Jacobs 64: The Golden Eagles (6-9) took a tough loss to a good team in their first matchup of the day during the MLK Shootout at Hononegah. Chris Orange led Jacobs with 30 points. “Auburn is a very good team. We played well early and they made a run,” said Jacobs head coach Jimmy Roberts. “We played pretty well for the most part.” Hononegah 51, Jacobs 43: Jacobs (6-9) took another loss Saturday evening against host Hononegah. “We shot poorly from the line and the field,” said Jacobs head coach Jimmy Roberts. Bartlett 64, Wheaton Warrenville South 61: The Hawks (12-7) beat Wheaton Warrenville South in overtime at the WWS MLK Shootout. Ryan DiCanio led the scoring with 26 points and Justin Busch contributed 15 points for Bartlett.

    When two teams take the floor with a combined 27-6 record, you might expect a memorable night in the making. The St. Edward boys basketball team would prefer to forget Saturday night’s proceedings altogether. The Green Wave missed its first seven shots and saw Bloomington Central Catholic score the game’s first 11 points on the way to an 84-48 drubbing in the final game of the sixth annual Boys Catholic Shootout.
