    Trailing by as many 9 points in the first half, Schaumburg’s girls basketball team had an uphill battle against a team that was all about winning. Visiting Westminster Christian came into Saturday’s nonconference matinee with a sparkling 19-2 record. “It was nerve-wracking,” said Schaumburg guard Brittany Reinhart. “I’m still shaking.” But the 5-foot-7 junior looked calm as could be when she stood at the free throw line with her team leading by 1 point and 29.3 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Reinhart sank 2 free throws which proved to be the decisive points in the Saxons’ 50-49 triumph over the Warriors, a class 2A team which advanced to the Elite Eight of the 1A state tourney a year ago.

    Plenty of suburban high schools have made the finals of the IHSA state competitive dance championships, which will be held Saturday in Bloomington. Ninety teams qualified to go downstate, but now only 30 remain.

    With a major winter storm looming Friday night, many local events planned for Saturday were being canceled. Among the cancellations announced Friday afternoon were the IHSA cheerleading sectional competitions, which have been moved to the same time Sunday in Grayslake and Rolling Meadows.

     
  • Kaneland’s Johnson returns to St. Edward a winner Feb 1, 2014 4:23 PM
    The St. Edward boys basketball program’s past met its present in Elgin Friday. Kaneland coach Brian Johnson — a 1997 St. Edward graduate who played on the last two Green Wave squads to win sectional titles — returned to his alma mater for a nonconference meeting twice postponed for weather-related reasons. Supported in the stands by approximately 10 former teammates as well as former St. Edward coach Kevin Dix, now an assistant coach at Lewis University, Johnson’s Knights pulled away from the Green Wave late in the third quarter of a 65-55 victory.

     
  • South Elgin’s Senior Night a success Jan 31, 2014 10:17 PM
    South Elgin four-year varsity starter Kennede Miller celebrated Senior Night Friday with four other seniors and the rest of her teammates. But Miller doesn’t know how she’s going to feel walking off the court at South Elgin for the final time yet. While the Storm still have another home game, Friday was a good way to celebrate. South Elgin won for the eighth time in its last nine games, defeating West Chicago, 55-23 in Upstate Eight Valley action.

    Westminster Christian 51, Chrisitan Liberty 35: With Sam Carani posting 24 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, the Warriors (10-10, 5-3) were able to get back to .500 and pick up a win on the road in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. “We had an excellent start tonight. It was a great defensive effort to beat a team like Christian Liberty,” Warriors coach Bruce Firchau said. Dillion Rejman and Robert Kleczynski added 12 and 10 points respectively.

    Jacobs 56, Marian Central 48: The Golden Eagles (5-17) snapped a 2-game skid with 9 3-pointers (out of 18 shots made) in a nonconference win over the Hurricanes. Nicole Cook, Glenita Williams and Carly Sidor each scored 12 points for Jacobs. Cook drained 4 from behind the arc and Williams nailed 2 as well. Jacobs drained 4 3-pointers in the second quarter alone. Westminster Christian 52, Wheaton Academy 42: The Warriors (19-2) used three double-digit scorers and a 17-11 third quarter to distance themselves for their fifth-straight win a nonconference action. Sophomore Maddie Versluys scored a game-high 17 points to go with 5 rebounds while Claire Speweik added 15 points and 5 steals. McKaila Hays dropped in 3 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Bishop McNamara 52, St. Edward 41: The Fightin’ Irish climbed out of a 4-point hole at the half with a 23-8 third quarter to snap the Green Wave’s 2-game winning streak in nonconference action in Kankakee. Cecile Rapp, in her first game back from injury, led the Wave (13-8) with 11 points and Clarissa Ramos chipped in 10. Harvest Christian 40, Faith Lutheran 4: A 10-point first quarter was all the Lions (12-8, 6-1) needed in a Northeastern Athletic Conference blowout. Kylee Knox registered a game-high 17 points on 8 of 16 shooting to go with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 assists. Gabi Rodriguez added 4 points but managed 11 rebounds.

    It’s a first for Bartlett High School, in fact, a first for any school in Elgin Area School District U-46: Bartlett’s speech and drama team took first place at the Upstate Eight Conference Tournament for competitive public speaking and acting. “We’ve never taken home the tournament championship,” said Anthony Zoubek, the school’s speech and drama coach.

    The third time was a charm, and now Neuqua Valley is hoping the fourth time come Saturday also will bring good results. After two weather cancellations this month, South Elgin finally was able to come to Naperville and take on the Wildcats in a battle of Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division front-runners Wednesday night. Neuqua Valley stayed perfect in league play with a 53-46 win and now has a two-game lead on the Storm (15-7, 7-2)

    Bartlett 79, Elgin 36: The Hawks (15-9) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a commanding victory over the Maroons in this Upstate Eight Conference crossover game. Liz Arco paced the Hawks as she recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Kelly Harris (16 points) and Ally Giampapa (13 points, 4 assists) scored double figures. The Maroons (6-14) were led by Maggie Powers and Abby Pierre-Louis with 8 and 7 points, respectively. Morgan Park Academy 47, Elgin Academy 16: The Hilltoppers could not get the offense rolling as they fell to Morgan Park Academy on the road. Kaitlyn Pearson led the Hilltoppers with 8 points, 6 steals, and 1 block. Prairie Ridge 50, Cary-Grove 48 (2 OT): The Trojans (13-10, 4-5) fell just short in double overtime as they dropped this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at home. Sarah Kendeigh led the way for C-G with 11 points while Jen Pilut added 10 points in the loss.

    In his early coaching days Mark Smith used to worry about the inactivity that comes with winter weather canceling school, practices and games. But now the Burlington Central girls basketball coach realizes everyone’s in the same boat. “No one has an advantage and there’s not much you can do about it,” Smith, who is also the former boys coach at St. Charles North, said Tuesday. “We’ll just pick it up (Wednesday) and move on.”

    What were some of the contributions of black Americans in the military throughout history? Elgin area residents can find out first hand from former Tuskegee Airmen, the famed group of black World War II combat pilots, and other African American military veterans who will be special guests at the Ninth Annual Black History Family Festival Saturday at Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin. The festival, dubbed “Honoring Our Heroes: Contributions of African American Veterans,” will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the library's main branch, 270 N. Grove Ave.
