Slow starts had been a problem for the Grayslake Central boys basketball team earlier this season. Problem solved. • Grant’s youth — and promise— show against Waukegan Nov 28, 2014 11:57 PM
Two sophomores in the starting lineup isn’t the only thing that makes the Grant boys basketball team inexperienced. The Bulldogs’ most experienced player is also, well, inexperienced. Junior forward James Mobley has started on varsity in the past. Just at a different school. Grant’s versatile go-to scorer grew up in the Grant district but then transferred to Round Lake for his freshman year. He started for the Panthers the entire season. But then last year, he transferred to Libertyville. Now, Mobley is back at Grant. His varsity experience shows, but he’s still not quite comfortable with his third new system in three years. It will take time for him to settle in, just like it will for all the new and inexperienced players at Grant, which returned less than 2 points per game from last year and starts sophomores Logan Lewis and Andy Kaye. Winning close games seems to be a work in progress, too. Despite 21 points from Mobley, the young Bulldogs just couldn’t get over the hump Friday night in a 61-57 loss to Waukegan in the Grant Thanksgiving tournament.

  • Waukegan edges Round Lake for North Shore triumph Aug 30, 2014 7:46 PM
A quick start worked in favor of Round Lake’s boys soccer team in the championship game of the North Shore Tournament on Saturday. The latter part of the game was much less favorable for the Panthers. They lost standout forward Freddie Ramirez to an injury in the second half and were forced to play the last 18 minutes one player short. It was too much to overcome, as Round Lake fell 3-2 to Waukegan after giving up 3 second-half goals at Lake Forest.

  • Warren rolls; Zion-Benton eliminates Lakes May 27, 2014 11:12 PM
The last time the Warren boys volleyball team made it to the sectional, senior middle hitter Max Bongratz was barely out of grade school. But Bongratz and his teammates are well-versed on that history. It’s what motivates them to go a little harder in the state tournament, as they did Tuesday night at the Antioch regional. The top-seeded Blue Devils had little trouble knocking off a scrappy Waukegan team in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-15.
