  • Stevenson finishes fourth in state tourney May 24, 2014 11:22 PM
Boys water polo Stevenson falls twice: At Stevenson, despite 6 goals from Mitchell Sokolsky, the Patriots dropped their final two games of the season. In Saturday morning’s state semifinal, Stevenson lost to Loyola 13-6. Naperville North then topped the Patriots 9-3 in the third-place match. Sokolsky scored 4 goals against Loyola, which led only 5-3 at halftime, while Dan Maleski and Zach Stephens also had goals for Stevenson. The Patriots led Naperville North 1-0 after one quarter but trailed 4-1 at the break. Sokolsky scored twice, and Alex Kapecki had the other tally for Stevenson. • Loyola went on to win the championship, topping Fenwick 3-2. Cameron Shewchuck led all scorers with 6 goals for the Ramblers (31-5), who were outscored 3-1 in the fourth quarter but earned a 3-2 edge in the OT periods. The top scorer for Fenwick (31-5) was Bailey Wendt with 3 goals. • In the girls water polo state championship game, Fenwick topped St. Ignatius 6-3 as senior Collen Barron scored 3 goals for the Friars (31-2).

  • Travetto pilots Stevenson to third place May 24, 2014 8:52 PM
So how did Stevenson water polo teammates Allison Travetto and Lauren Burns celebrate their team’s third-place state finish? They hopped on a plane and headed to California. Sounds like plan. But what were they up to on this ride across the country? “They are both on the national development team for water polo,” said Stevenson coach Jeff Wimer. “They needed to catch the 7:40 (p.m.) plane so they had to go to the airport.” But what about Ms. Travetto? She scored a stunning 6 goals Saturday evening in the final match of the season for the Patriots, who were competing in their home pool. In fact, that was one more goal than foe Mother McAuley scored all day long. Stevenson (31-5) went home with the third-place trophy after a convincing 9-5 win.

  • Naperville North clobbers Sandburg in quarterfinal May 22, 2014 10:01 PM
How can there be a blowout at the state tournament? It’s not like Sandburg and Naperville North haven’t seen each other this year. In that matchup Naperville North broke open a close game after halftime back on April 12. “It was 3-3 at halftime,’’ said Naperville North coach Martin Bell. Thursday marked the beginning of the boys water polo state finals at Stevenson High School, and Naperville North junior Drake McClure scored the first goal for the Huskies less than 30 seconds into the match.

  • Fast-starting Stevenson rolls into semifinals May 22, 2014 10:37 PM
Host Stevenson wasted little time getting rolling Thursday night in the boys water polo state tournament. The Patriots jumped all over Brother Rice in this quarterfinal contest as they built a commanding 9-1 lead over the Crusaders at halftime before coasting to a 12-7 victory. Stevenson (27-7) advanced to the semifinals against Loyola Academy (29-5) Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Brother Rice closed out its season with an 11-18 record.

  • Palatine falls short against Loyola in state quarterfinals May 22, 2014 11:08 PM
After a game where a whole lot didn’t go Palatine’s way, coach Joe Grzybek wasn’t about to let a 15-9 loss to Loyola Academy detract from a great season. The Pirates lost a game they wanted to win, but their coach felt like a winner anyway.

  • Proven Palatine turns back fired-up Fremd May 17, 2014 6:10 PM
Top-seeded Palatine seemingly had it all under control, leading 11-7 against Fremd after three quarters in the championship game of the boys water polo sectional hosted by the Pirates. The Vikings, seeded No. 6, did everything it could to spring another upset with a concerted fourth-quarter surge, but in the end Palatine’s experience held sway in a 12-10 decision. The Pirates earned a second trip to state under coach Joe Grzybek, but the most recent one was back in 2006. In the intervening years, there’ve been consistently strong teams and conference championships — but also a series of heartbreaking losses in sectional semifinals and finals. “It’s nice to have a different outcome, the one we were looking for,” said Grzybek. “Everyone has their own battle — teams tend to get stuck at a certain level. For us, we’ve been able to make a lot of sectional finals, so that’s been our challenge, to get through.”

  • Naperville North does things its way May 17, 2014 9:31 PM
Naperville North has used its depth all season to become the state’s top-ranked boys water polo team. Why should Saturday’s 9-6 victory over Naperville Central in the Metea Valley sectional final that clinched the Huskies’ third straight trip to state have been any different?

  • First things first: Palatine makes Elite Eight May 17, 2014 6:02 PM
Not too long ago, Palatine was having a hard time winning any girls water polo game, much less the ones that come at the end of the season. Three seasons ago, the Pirates finished with a record of 6-21. Two years ago, that improved to 12-18. Last year, 18-12. The winning trend continued this season, and Palatine punctuated it Saturday afternoon in its own pool with the biggest win in the program’s history. A 9-6 victory over Conant, in the sectional championship game. For the first time, Palatine (27-5) will play in the Elite Eight.

  • Stevenson wins latest rivalry game with Mundelein May 17, 2014 6:17 PM
This Stevenson-Mundelein rivalry in boys water polo is truly something. A good decade ago, both teams were at full strength and battled every year. And they then messed with the pool at Mundelein, and the home team suffered for it. “Two years ago, we were 5-25,’’ said Mundelein coach Russell Gates. On Saturday, it was 19-game winner Mundelein hosting the sectional final against coach Sean Wimer’s 25-game winning Patriots team. Stevenson raced to a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back in a 12-5 win over the Mustangs. And the Pats are going home for the state tournament come Thursday night.
