  • White to join Stetson’s football reintroduction Apr 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Warren senior Shayne White has earned a tip of the hat, so to speak. White has signed an institutional letter of intent with the Stetson University Hatters in Deland, Fla., where he will play football. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder started on the offensive line last fall and earned honorable mention All-North Suburban Conference honors in helping the Blue Devils earn a state playoff berth.

  • New looks suits Warren Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
It doesn't make a lot of sense, but hey, if the players believe it, maybe there really is some meaning behind it. Warren's boys volleyball team headed to its own Blue Devil Invite in sort of a funk. They limped in with back-to-back losses to Vernon Hills and Deerfield. Then the new jerseys arrived on campus. And down went Mt. Carmel, Niles North and Whitney Young in pool play. The fourth straight victory came over a good Maine South squad. The fifth match of the day for Warren pitted the Blue Devils against once-beaten Niles West. At stake was the championship on Saturday.

Warren’s got it covered in sweep of Carmel Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
A sweep complete, Warren's softball team watched its tarp get swept up by a mighty gust of cold wind. "Noooooo!" a Blue devil screamed, as the giant infield cover nearly went airborne, a la a magic carpet. No worries. The hosts had their teamwork thing down pat Saturday. With a little aid from the opponent, Carmel Catholic, as well as several big tires, Warren secured the tarp. And all was good for the Blue Devils, who followed up their 12-1 win over Glenbrook South in the morning with a 6-4 victory over Carmel in the afternoon.

  • Gelinas, McCurley lead Lake Zurich past Warren Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Meaghan Gelinas and Kaitlyn McCurley are a tandem in Lake Zurich's midfield sure to cause problems for opposing teams this season. Warren found out the hard way on Thursday night. Thanks to disruptive midfield work from Gelinas and McCurley, the Blue Devils had a hard time getting their offensive attack on track. "We just know how to work well together," Gelinas said. "We know our skill levels, and we trust one another. "We really play good team defense and work well as team this year. One of our goals is to work together and push up as a team." So far, so good for the Bears as Lake Zurich opened North Suburban Lake Division play with a 3-0 victory over visiting Warren. Gelinas and McCurley both had 1 assist apiece.

  • You’ve gotta hand it to Warren’s Coronado — carefully Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Don't slap Selaina Coronado's right hand too hard when giving the Warren softball player a deserved high-five. Then again, go ahead. The junior second baseman's digits are fine. She even has a note from her doctor to prove it. Coronado fractured a finger on her throwing hand during tryouts last month. She wasn't too happy about it. "She was supposed to be out for a month, but she was like, I'm fine,' " Blue Devils coach Tina Meyer said. "I was like, Yeah, but you don't have a doctor's note.' So she went back (to the doctor)." Coronado, who didn't play on Warren's Spring Break trip to Louisville, Ky., got medical clearance to resume playing Monday night. She picked up a pair of hits and 3 RBI against Stevenson on Tuesday and then delivered again Thursday. Her fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the sixth snapped a tie and gave Warren a 2-1 win over visiting Vernon Hills in a rematch of last season's North Suburban Conference championship game.

  • Dream finish for Slater, Warren Apr 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Samantha Slater scored her first varsity goal in Warren's girls soccer home opener, proving that dreams can and do sometimes come true. It came on a header, and Slater's goal was the game-winner as Warren shut out visiting Stevenson 1-0 in a North Suburban Lake Division opener in Gurnee on Tuesday night. The goal was set up by Kristen Huard's corner kick in the 46th minute.
