    Amanda Orchard of the University of Pittsburgh volleyball team has earned a Division I All-America honorable mention, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Lake Zurich High School graduate becomes the first player under head coach Dan Fisher to receive the honor and the 11th Panther in program history to garner All-America tributes at Pitt.

    Back in the early days of Fremd girls volleyball, Lane Hindenburg’s mother Sue was an outside hitter for the Vikings’ varsity team. Standing 5-foot-8, Sue was the tallest player on the team. “Volleyball has definitely changed,” she said. And Sue’s daughter Lane sure changed a lot of matches in favor of the Vikings for the past four seasons with her powerful spiking abilities. The 6-foot outside hitter developed into one of the top attackers in the Mid-Suburban League over the last four seasons and recently made a commitment to play Division I volleyball at the University of New Orleans, where she plans to study psychology.

    Some really great things are happening right now with the women’s college basketball teams in Illinois. Northwestern (4-0) travels to No. 18 DePaul (4-1) on Saturday night (7 p.m.) for a crosstown rivalry matchup that features two of the most accomplished coaches in the sport. Another Big Ten contender suddenly could be Illinois, which, on Thanksgiving, pulled off one of the best wins of the college basketball season.

    While her high school alma mater was enjoying a championship season in volleyball, Bria Hailey was doing the same in college this fall. Hailey, a former Schaumburg Saxon, now plays middle blocker for Carthage College and she was named to the College Conference of Wisconsin & Illinois first team. Schaumburg enjoyed championships in the Mid-Suburban West and the regional this fall under coach Jeanette Pancratz, who played a key role in Hailey’s decision to attend Carthage. Hailey helped the Lady Reds to a school record regular-season 35-3 record and league championship.

    It’s not like Libertyville hadn’t been in this position before. So when Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal came down to a third game, the Wildcats weren’t about to panic. Using the experience gained from losing the first game before winning the next two against Crystal Lake South in last week’s supersectional, Libertyville roared back Friday to defeat Loyola Academy 21-25, 25-22, 25-11 in the second state semifinal at Redbird Arena. The Wildcats (35-6), who finished fourth at state in 2007 and 2012, will play for the state championship for the first time at 8:55 p.m. Saturday against Benet Academy (40-1), which beat Normal Community in two games in the first semifinal. Benet, which is playing in its fourth straight state title match, defeated Libertyville 25-10, 25-18 on Sept. 20. The Redwings, second to Mother McAuley last year, will be seeking their third state title since 2011.
