    Most certainly Sept. 23 on the volleyball calendar was circled at the Dykgraaf household in Hawthorn Woods. Why? Well, it would be the first meeting of the season for mother and daughter. You see, Kylie Dykgraaf, the freshman setter at Lake Zurich, is the daughter of longtime Stevenson assistant coach Vicky Nordhem. Mom got bragging rights on this night.

    The Barrington girls volleyball team was connecting just as well as Megan Talbot’s jump serve on Tuesday night in the Fillies gymnasium. Talbot, the Fillies’ junior middle blocker, excited the crowd with 3 aces in a row to give the hosts a 4-point cushion early in the second set and they never looked back en route to a 25-17, 25-18 triumph over visiting Conant.

    Palatine’s girls volleyball team defeated visiting Schaumburg for the second time this season on Tuesday night.But this one was the first in the Mid-Suburban West where the Saxons had been undefeated. Led by Jessica Lundell (11 kills), Meg Angelaccio (6), Alaina Mikkelsen (6) and Heather Holz (5), the Pirates posted a 25-21, 25-20 victory and moved to within one match of first place behind Fremd (5-1) and Schaumburg (5-1).

    Libertyville d. New Trier: Alex Basler and Hannah Zerwas each had 6 kills as Libertyville swept New Trier, 25-23, 25-23 to improve to 17-4. Liz Apgar rolled up 13 assists, 9 digs and 3 blocks for the Wildcats. Grayslake Central d. Vernon Hills: Grayslake Central out-lasted Vernon Hills, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20. Taylor O’Neil led the way with 9 kills and teammate Allie Daul added 7 kills. Marie Gerbasi finished with 17 digs and 2 aces for Grayslake Central while setter Juliana Frusolone had 19 assists. The Rams are now 14-12. Grayslake North d. Grant: The Knights rolled to a 27-25, 25-16 sweep thanks to 4 kills apiece from Kendall Buchman and Maggie Fish. Buchman also had 8 digs and 5 assists while Fish added 3 blocks. Nicole Labaron led the defense with 9 digs.

They got what they wanted, though for a time it looked like the No. 8-ranked Harper College womens’ volleyball team might easily handle Rochester Community and Technical College on Saturday in Palatine as part of the Harper College Invite. Harper ended up winning in five sets.

    With sweeps in all five of its matches, Wauconda won its own tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs topped second-place Grayslake Central (25-19, 25-19) and third-place Marengo (25-17, 25-8). They also defeated Round Lake (25-10, 25-13), North Chicago (25-4, 25-5) and Lake Forest Academy (25-8, 25-17). LeAnne Sakowicz led the Bulldogs with 35 kills, 38 assists, 17 digs and 19 aces over the tournament. Sara Sexton added 24 kills and Kayla Wedl finished with 13. Catie Patralia rolled up 40 assists for Wauconda and also added 11 aces and 9 digs. Ashley Anderson led Wauconda in digs with 32. The Bulldogs are now 17-4 on the season. For Grayslake Central, Juliana Frusolone rolled up 71 assists while Taylor O’Neill and Allie Daul finished with 24 and 21 kills respectively. Dani Sentz led the Rams with 14 aces. Grayslake Central is now 13-12 on the season. Hersey Invite: At the Hersey Invite, Mundelein placed fourth in the six-team field. The Mustangs went 1-4, defeating Hoffman Estates, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13. St. Viator Invite: At the St. Viator Invite, Carmel advanced to the gold bracket and lost to eventual champion Timothy Christian, 25-22, 25-19.

    It was a battle between the Mid-Suburban East and West girls volleyball leaders for the championship match of the Hersey Invite on Saturday afternoon. The host Huskies, leaders in the East, staked a claim to their own invite with a 25-21, 25-12 victory over Schaumburg.

    The coaches and many fans at Thursday’s annual Volley For A Cure between St. Viator and Vernon Hills wore similar T-shirts. On the back they read, ‘Believe There Is Hope For A Cure.’ “That is a team effort,” said Lions senior Grace Fedus of the choice phrasing. “Everyone collaborates on it.” Sounds likes she is also talking about the sizzling start to the season for the Lions’ girls volleyball team. St. Viator ran its record to 12-2-1 with a hard-fought 25-23, 26-24 victory at the Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    Girls volleyball Lake Zurich d. Mundelein: Lexi Gora pounded 14 kills, and the Bears won 25-15, 25-20 to improve to 5-6 and 2-1 in the North Suburban Lake. Hannah Sweetwood added 8 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces for Lake Zurich. Kylie Dykgraaf dished out 26 assists, Sienna Robertson chipped in 9 digs, and Nicole Gaggiano had 2 kills and 1 block for the Bears. Lakes d. Lake Forest Academy: The Eagles won the nonconference match 25-8, 25-12, as McKenna Lahr rang up 10 kills and 6 digs. Lakes (15-2) also received contributions from Megan Behrendt (5 kills, 6 digs, 6 aces), Maddie Demo (23 assists, 3 aces), Izzy Huntington (3 kills, 7 digs) and Allie Grandos (3 kills, 2 blocks). Grayslake North d. Woodstock North: Kendall Buchman tallied 15 digs, 9 assists and 6 kills, as the Knights prevailed 26-24, 19-25, 25-19 in Fox Valley Fox play. Grayslake North (5-15, 2-3) also got 15 digs from Nicole LeBaron, 13 digs from Cassie Reimbold and 7 assists from Char Gaunky. Crystal Lake Central d. Grayslake Central: The Rams fell 25-18, 25-13 in Fox Valley Fox action, despite 3 kills apiece from Allie Daul, Hayley Peterson and Taylor O’Neil. Peterson led Grayslake Central (9-11, 2-2) with 19 digs, and Juliana Frusolone dished out 12 assists on 51-of-52 setting. “We played sold defense against a very tough Crystal Lake Central team,” Rams coach Jason Janczak said.

    Schaumburg’s girls volleyball team advanced through the first half of its Mid-Suburban West schedule undefeated after posting a 25-21, 25-11 victory over Hoffman Estates on Thursday night, and Hersey stayed perfect in the East by beating Buffalo Grove.
