    Larkin had no trouble maintaining its intensity, not when the opponent was Elgin. Behind 9 kills from Amelia Gill, the Royals powered their way to a 25-22, 25-20 win against their crosstown rival in Upstate Eight River Division girls volleyball action at Larkin Tuesday night.

    It looked like anything but just another ho-hum match as visiting Lakes, a 27-game winner, took a 23-18 lead in set one of a pivotal volleyball match at Wauconda. After all, the North Suburban Conference’s Prairie Division crown was up for discussion on Wednesday night. And then Wauconda’s LeAnne Sakowicz went into serve for the trailing team.

    The atmosphere did not suggest a nonconference girls volleyball match on a school night. “It still feels like conference to me,” Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann said after Rosary turned back longtime league and neighborhood rival Aurora Central Catholic in straight sets Tuesday evening on the Royals’ home court in Aurora.

    Does this Carmel Catholic team have a chip on its shoulder? As if the rest of the world doesn’t show this volleyball team much respect? The third seed in the Glenbrook North sectional, Carmel is indeed marching towards another 30-win campaign. Tuesday’s victim was visiting Fenwick. Carmel’s 26th win of the season came in two sets, 25-13, 25-22. Carmel was led by Gracie Schofield, who rang up 12 kills in the two sets.

    St. Charles North coach Lindsey Hawkins felt her team turned a corner over the weekend taking second place at the Schaumburg Saxon Invitational. That progress was on display for all of St. Charles to see on Volley for the Cure night Tuesday. In front of a packed gym at St. Charles East, the North Stars stunned the Saints with a 25-14, 25-22 victory that denied the hosts the outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship.

    Being forced to juggle the lineup isn’t the ideal way to enter a rivalry match, but the South Elgin girls volleyball team made it work Tuesday in a 25-17, 25-19 victory on Bartlett’s Senior Night. With starting middle hitter Sarah Hallas away on a six-day college trip, coach Joni Plach played usual right side hitter Rachel Priore in the middle and called up junior Jasmin Duncan from the JV team.

    Building a 24-18 lead in the opening game against Batavia, Geneva’s volleyball team found itself in a familiar situation Tuesday night. “At the Mizuno Cup this past weekend, we had a 24-17 lead (over Neuqua Valley) and they came back and beat us that game,” said Geneva sophomore outside hitter Grace Loberg. “We were not going to let that happen.”

  • U.S. wins first major women’s volleyball title Oct 12, 2014 6:14 PM
    Kimberly Hill led the United States to its first major women’s volleyball title, scoring 20 points in a 3-1 victory over China on Sunday in the world championships. Hill had the final kill, and captain Christa Dietzen added 15 points in the Americans’ 27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24 victory before 12,600 fans at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan.

     
  • Benet wins Mizuno to remain undefeated Oct 11, 2014 7:47 PM
    Benet Academy’s girls volleyball team put the finishing touch on a successful week by capturing the Gold Division championship at Saturday’s St. Charles East Mizuno Cup in Aurora. Led by Most Valuable Player Rachael Fara and all-tournament teammates Tiffany Clark and Dana Griffin, the Redwings (27-0) defeated defending tourney champion Plainfield North 25-19, 14-25, 25-18 in the championship match.

     
  • Radtke, Stevenson in fine form at Glenbrook North Oct 11, 2014 9:47 PM
    Jori Radtke was nearly unstoppable for Stevenson’s girls volleyball team in the Glenbrook North tournament. The Patriots wrapped up play by outlasting Morton 30-32, 25-14, 25-19, as Radtke slammed 14 kills for the third time in four matches. She also had 14-kill efforts against Glenbrook North and Glenbrook North’s JV. Stevenson (18-13) won its final two matches, including a 25-23, 26-24 decision over Buffalo Grove. Radtke’s 7 kills led the way against the Bison.

     
  • Huntley savors its own tournament championship Oct 11, 2014 9:29 PM
    Playing St. Francis and Cary-Grove earlier in the week turned out to be beneficial losses for the young Huntley girls volleyball team. The Red Raiders finished off a perfect weekend with a 25-20, 25-22 win over Marian Central Saturday to capture the championship of the 30th annual Huntley Invitational, the first time they have won their own tournament in coach Karen Naymola’s three years at the helm.

     
  • Schaumburg third in own invitational Oct 11, 2014 10:09 PM
    This Thursday night, Schaumburg will try to secure its first berth in the Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball championship match since 2010. The Saxons tuned up with five matches on their home floor Saturday, finishing third in their own invite. Schaumburg fell to Rockton Hononegah (25-19, 25-22) in the third-place match. Cary-Grove defeated St. Charles North for the title, 25-23, 25-23.

    St. Charles North volleyball player Taryn Dal Degan said her family rings the bell for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. They make sandwiches for Lazarus House to distribute to people who are hungry. The senior setter said one of the quotes they like at her National Honor Society meetings is: the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
