  • Warren stands tall, makes state semifinals Jun 6, 2014 10:27 PM
This marked the third straight trip to state for the Chicago Payton Grizzlies. And just maybe, the third time would be the charm. After all, they weren’t playing a state power but rather a team from Gurnee named Warren. In fact, a Warren team that had 13 losses on its record and making its own first trip to state. The Payton lead hit 20-15 in set one, and later it was still a healthy 23-20. But this Warren team will play for a state trophy Saturday at Hoffman Estates High School. Warren toppled 30-game winner Payton, 27-25, 25-19.

  • Fast-starting Lake Park leaves Barrington behind Jun 3, 2014 9:43 PM
Memories of slow starts were haunting Lake Park when the Lancers took to the court in Tuesday’s boys volleyball sectional final against Barrington at Conant. “So many times this year we’ve lost game one of matches, only to come back and win,” said Lancers coach Tim Murphy. “We knew we couldn’t do that tonight." Backed by a large crowd, which was roaring on almost every point, Lake Park reversed recent history by storming out of the gate. The Lancers built up big leads in both sets and hung on for a 25-17, 25-21 sectional title victory.

  • Deerfield denies Vernon Hills May 30, 2014 10:59 PM
Clearly, the most exciting moment for Vernon Hills came with Michael Heinz serving in Set 2. The senior’s low serve just cleared the net. And when Max Spiglanin made block kill, the Cougars had erased a 7-4 Deerfield lead and surged to a 9-8 advantage. There was fire in the eyes of the Cougars players and momentum had jumped over net to Vernon Hills. The sectional semifinal at Highland Park on Friday night could not have been closer. Maybe the difference was the 1-2 punch of Deerfield outside hitters Zachary Hara and John Harlan. The two power hitters combined for 23 kills, as Deerfield ended the Cougars’ season by winning identical 25-23, 25-23 scores.

Warren wasn’t tested in its 25-15, 25-10 win that earned the Blue Devils a berth in Tuesday’s night’s sectional final against power Deerfield.

  • Selfless play helps Vernon Hills advance May 28, 2014 10:20 PM
Coaches love a player like Dylan DeBoer. That’s because the nearly 6-foot-3 outside hitter for Vernon Hills is strictly playing for the sake of the team. “It’s whatever we need him for,’’ said Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry. “Sometimes we hardly notice him.” That wasn’t the case on Wednesday night in Mundelein. On tap was the regional final matchup at Carmel. For the fourth time this season, the Cougars met up with Lake Zurich. And it was DeBoer’s night to stand up and be noticed. His 10 kills led all players. And for the fourth time this season, the Cougars (28-9) beat the best Bears team since volleyball came to that school.

  • Warren rolls; Zion-Benton eliminates Lakes May 27, 2014 11:12 PM
The last time the Warren boys volleyball team made it to the sectional, senior middle hitter Max Bongratz was barely out of grade school. But Bongratz and his teammates are well-versed on that history. It’s what motivates them to go a little harder in the state tournament, as they did Tuesday night at the Antioch regional. The top-seeded Blue Devils had little trouble knocking off a scrappy Waukegan team in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-15. Warren will now face No. 2 Zion-Benton in today’s regional championship game (6 p.m.) at Antioch.
