  • Girls volleyball: Keith ousts Harvest Christian again Nov 8, 2014 10:59 PM
It was the same old song and dance for Harvest Christian on Saturday as another great season ended on a sour note for the fourth straight year in the Class 1A supersectional. But despite the disappointing 25-18, 25-10 loss on their home floor to Keith Country Day the mood was rather upbeat afterward for the Lions as seniors reflected back on the legacy they have left behind, underclassmen looked forward to what lies ahead, and coach Kim Floyd praised the team for this year’s accomplishments.

  • Girls volleyball: Libertyville battles past Crystal Lake South Nov 8, 2014 9:25 PM
All Libertyville’s girls volleyball team had to do after the first set of Saturday’s Class 4A Fremd supersectional was look at the stat sheet to know something had to change. The glaring stat in the Wildcats’ loss in that first set was more than 10 unforced errors. So Libertyville did something about it. Shaking off a subpar performance in the first set, the Wildcats stormed back and captured a 17-25, 25-19, 26-24 win over Crystal Lake South, sending them downstate for the second time in the last three years.

  • St. Francis stops Wauconda’s postseason journey Nov 6, 2014 9:49 PM
The magical ride for Wauconda’s girls volleyball team ended on Thursday night, but the girls on this team wore smiles after their match with powerhouse St. Francis. “I think we are holding back,’’ said Wauconda middle hitter, Sara Sexton. “This is the furthest we’ve gone in 10 years.” Indeed. This Bulldogs team wasn’t even supposed to beat Prairie Division power Lakes. And Wauconda clearly wasn’t likely to knock off 30-game winner Wheaton Academy in the Class 3A sectional opener at Vernon Hills. Yet this Bulldogs team kept on winning. “We found our way,’’ Sexton said. “We got along and played together.” The end of the season came at the hands of 35-4 St. Francis as Wauconda fell 25-14, 25-12. The Spartans advance to a Class 3A supersectional date against Marian Central at 1 p.m. Saturday at Belvidere High School.

  • Schildmeyer shines, sets St. Charles East to big season Nov 6, 2014 12:34 PM
Greg Schildmeyer grew up playing basketball and football outside Cincinnati, and he went on to play football at the Naval Academy. As much as he loves those two sports, there's a new one that has dominated his life pretty much ever since college. Married to Jill, a volleyball player at Palatine High School and then Virginia Tech, and now with three volleyball-playing daughters at St. Charles East — Megan, Emily and Kate — it's easy to see which sport consumes him these days. “He's learned a lot about volleyball through the years,” joked Megan.

  • Girls volleyball: Elite Eight for Crystal Lake South Nov 7, 2014 4:58 AM
The greatest players step up their game at the most important times, which is what Crystal Lake South’s Carly Nolan did Thursday night. In her final match on her home court, the senior outside hitter dominated the Class 4A CL South girls volleyball sectional final. The Cincinnati-bound Nolan mostly spiked but sometimes tipped her way to a season-high 14 kills to lead the Gators past rival Cary-Grove 26-24, 25-22.

  • Libertyville rolls past Carmel Nov 6, 2014 10:12 PM
Libertyville didn’t win the point, which was one of the few that eluded the Wildcats, and Lizzie Apgar didn’t come away unscathed. The cost of the senior setter’s slide and slam into the first row of Glenbrook North’s bleachers was a bruised and scratched left shoulder, which required ice after Thursday night’s sectional final. She retrieved her headband, which flew off, and hustled back onto the court. “I don’t roll very well,” Apgar said with a laugh. “When I dive for the ball, I cover my head.” The fearless Apgar and her teammates are on quite a roll. Libertyville lived up to its No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Glenbrook North sectional by dispatching No. 3 Carmel Catholic 25-18, 25-16 in Northbrook. While Libertyville (33-6) earned a berth in Saturday’s 2 p.m. Fremd supersectional against Crystal Lake South (32-7), Carmel ended what coach David Pazely called its best season ever with a 33-6 record.

  • New standard for Loyola as Schaumburg falls short Nov 6, 2014 10:07 PM
Girls volleyball began twenty years ago at Loyola Academy, which had been an all-boys school in Wilmette. They changed history with a 25-17, 25-13 victory in the Class 4A Maine East sectional championship in Park Ridge. The Ramblers (26-9) advanced to Saturday’s Evanston supersectional against De La Salle at 1 p.m.

  • Benet tames St. Charles East again Nov 6, 2014 9:47 PM
To win a fourth straight sectional title, Benet needed its fourth win this year over St. Charles East. The Redwings got it Thursday night in the Class 4A Bartlett sectional championship game. After a wild 29-27 win in the first set when Benet fought off two set points, the Redwings rolled to a 25-16 victory in the second set.
