  • Libertyville comes back, tops Loyola Nov 14, 2014 11:23 PM
    It’s not like Libertyville hadn’t been in this position before. So when Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal came down to a third game, the Wildcats weren’t about to panic. Using the experience gained from losing the first game before winning the next two against Crystal Lake South in last week’s supersectional, Libertyville roared back Friday to defeat Loyola Academy 21-25, 25-22, 25-11 in the second state semifinal at Redbird Arena. The Wildcats (35-6), who finished fourth at state in 2007 and 2012, will play for the state championship for the first time at 8:55 p.m. Saturday against Benet Academy (40-1), which beat Normal Community in two games in the first semifinal. Benet, which is playing in its fourth straight state title match, defeated Libertyville 25-10, 25-18 on Sept. 20. The Redwings, second to Mother McAuley last year, will be seeking their third state title since 2011.

    Libertyville (34-6) faces Loyola (27-9) at 9 p.m. today in a state semifinal at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal. The winners plays the winner of today’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal between Benet Academy and Normal Community. “We’re coming down with the same mentality we came with in 2012,” said Loika, whose Wildcats finished fourth at state two years ago, losing to Benet in three sets and Mother McAuley in two. “We’re not satisfied with just showing up. We’re coming down to win.”

    After a loss on Friday in the CCIW Tournament semifinals, the Elmhurst women’s volleyball team was in risk of its season being over. However, with an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, the Bluejays will live to see another day.

    Amy Choi is going out in style in her fifth year on the Lewis University women’s volleyball team. The former Vernon Hills standout, who redshirted in 2013, has been named to the 2014 Women’s Volleyball Capital One Academic All-District 4 Team. Choi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science last year with a 3.90 GPA. She is currently pursuing her graduate degree in information security.

    It was the same old song and dance for Harvest Christian on Saturday as another great season ended on a sour note for the fourth straight year in the Class 1A supersectional. But despite the disappointing 25-18, 25-10 loss on their home floor to Keith Country Day the mood was rather upbeat afterward for the Lions as seniors reflected back on the legacy they have left behind, underclassmen looked forward to what lies ahead, and coach Kim Floyd praised the team for this year’s accomplishments.

    All Libertyville’s girls volleyball team had to do after the first set of Saturday’s Class 4A Fremd supersectional was look at the stat sheet to know something had to change. The glaring stat in the Wildcats’ loss in that first set was more than 10 unforced errors. So Libertyville did something about it. Shaking off a subpar performance in the first set, the Wildcats stormed back and captured a 17-25, 25-19, 26-24 win over Crystal Lake South, sending them downstate for the second time in the last three years.

  • New standard for Loyola as Schaumburg falls short Nov 6, 2014 10:07 PM
    Girls volleyball began twenty years ago at Loyola Academy, which had been an all-boys school in Wilmette. Going into Thursday’s match with No. 2 Schaumburg, the top-seeded Ramblers had never won a sectional crown in the sport. They changed history with a 25-17, 25-13 victory in the Class 4A Maine East sectional championship in Park Ridge. The Ramblers (26-9) advanced to Saturday’s Evanston supersectional against De La Salle at 1 p.m.
