  • Neuqua Valley holds off South Elgin Sep 16, 2014 9:35 PM
    Momentum is a funny thing and sometimes it can be gained even through a loss. That’s what happened with the Neuqua Valley girls volleyball team at South Elgin Tuesday night. The Wildcats lost Game 1 of the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division match but the momentum they gained with a big comeback that fell just short carried into the rest of the night. They held off the scrappy Storm 24-26, 25-13, 25-22 to remain undefeated in the division.

     
  • Warren’s Burris-Paramski makes Lawrence’s Hall of Fame Sep 15, 2014 3:33 PM
    Local fans will remember the stellar high school career of Jennifer Burris-Paramski at Warren High School. From there, she went on to compete for Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. and her success hardly missed a beat from her prep days. Burris-Paramski will be honored for her post high school days in three weeks when she is inducted into the Lawrence Hall of Fame as one of six new members.

    Hersey’s girls volleyball team notched it second win of the season over Stevenson on Monday night. But these Patriots were not the same ones the Huskies topped 25-18, 25-11 on Sept. 6. at the Jacobs Invite. “They (Stevenson) were a much-improved since we faced them a few weeks ago,” said Huskies coach Nancy Lill after her team edged the Pats 26-24, 25-23 in a nonconference match at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. “We were out of system a little more than we’d like but we were happy to come away with the win. It was a hard-fought battle.”

  • Girls volleyball / Lake County roundup Sep 15, 2014 11:49 PM
    Le Anne Sakowicz had 10 kills while teammates Becky Sidlowski, Sara Sexton and Kayla Wedl added 6 kills apiece as Wauconda got a 27-25, 21-25, 25-19 victory over Zion-Benton in girls volleyball on Monday. Sexton also had 5 aces and 5 digs while Ashley Anderson led the Bulldogs with 16 digs. Wauconda got 15 assists from Catie Petralia and 14 assists from Sakowicz. The Bulldogs are now 11-4 on the season. Libertyville d. Lake Forest: Libertyville improved to 12-2 (2-0 NSC Lake) with a 25-19, 22-25, 25-23 win over Lake Forest. Alex Basler had 15 kills for Libertyville while setter Liz Apgar finished with 33 assists. Morgan O’Brien had 16 digs for the Wildcats. Hersey d. Stevenson: Jori Radtke had 7 kills to lead Stevenson, which was swept by Hersey, 24-26, 23-25. The Patriots, who got 16 digs from Morgan Berland and 15 assists from Corissa Kurth, are now 6-9 on the season. Fremd d. Lake Zurich: Fremd squeaked past Lake Zurich, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24. Sophomores Lexi Gora and Hannah Sweetwood came up big for Lake Zurich, tallying 12 kills apiece. The Bears got 35 digs out of Mickenzie Andrews and 30 assists from freshman setter Kylie Dykgraaf.

    Struggling down the stretch of a Game 1 loss to IC Catholic Prep, Rosary’s volleyball team needed to regroup. The Royals (5-6) did just that, pulling away for a Game 2 victory before pulling out the decisive third game during Monday night’s 15-25, 25-17, 25-19 triumph over the defending Class 2A state champions at the Kunold Athletic Center in Aurora.

  • St. Viator wins Resurrection Invite title Sep 13, 2014 10:07 PM
    Off to a sizzling 11-2-1 start, St. Viator’s girls volleyball team tied a tournament championship to its early-season accolades on Saturday afternoon. The Lions went 4-0-1 to claim the top spot at the Resurrection girls volleyball tournament in Chicago. St. Viator defeated St. Ignatius, Holy Trinity Resurrection and North Side College Prep in two games and also had a tie with North Side College Prep.

     
  • Lakes nets title in own tourney Sep 13, 2014 10:13 PM
    McKenna Lahr and Megan Behrendt led the way at the net, as Lakes’ girls volleyball team won its own invitational Saturday. Lahr slammed 43 kills, while Behrendt racked up 32 kills, 35 digs, 8 aces and 5 blocks. The Eagles went 5-0 on the day, defeating Ridgewood (25-21, 25-8), Antioch (25-23, 25-9), Grayslake Central (25-21, 25-20), Deerfield (25-15, 25-10) and Grayslake North (25-16, 25-20). Lakes setter Maddie Demo dished 98 assists, while adding 5 aces and 11 kills. The Eagles’ other contributors included Izzy Huntington (12 kills, 22 digs, 5 blocks), Katie Billetdeaux (15 kills, 15 blocks), Kaylee Romeo (11 blocks), Lisa Buehler (23 digs), Morgan Phillips (24 digs) and Kelly Clendening (15 digs). Lahr also had 7 aces, 34 digs, and 6 blocks. Lakes coach Kate Cheek said her girls are “working well together and continuing to show their commitment to the team and to working on their team chemistry. They are always working to get better and to push their skills to the limits.”

  • Cary-Grove’s growth continues at Prairie Ridge Invite Sep 13, 2014 10:42 PM
    Same coaches. Same building. Far different stakes. The last time girls volleyball teams coached by Barrington’s Michelle Jakubowski and Cary-Grove’s Patty Langanis met was in 2011, when Langanis’ Trojans defeated an injury weakened Huntley squad — then coached by Jakubowski — to win the Class 4A Prairie Ridge sectional title.

  • Wheeling gets tough, completes comeback against BG Sep 11, 2014 10:17 PM
    Wheeling’s girls volleyball team was down by 10 points to Buffalo Grove in the third set on Thursday night. The Wildcats had been in a similar situation on several occasions this season and failed to complete a winning rally. But with a share of first place in the Mid-Suburban East on the line, the host Wildcats put everything on the line. The result was a stunning come-from-behind 17-25, 25-18, 25-23 victory, leaving the hosts tied for first with Hersey (both 3-0).

    Down 5-0 to a very talented Crystal Lake South team in Game 1, it seemed like it might be a night to forget for Cary-Grove. It ended up being a night to remember for the Trojans. Overcoming a sluggish start, Cary-Grove rebounded for an impressive 25-17, 25-22 win over the visiting Gators in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls volleyball action in Cary Thursday night.

    Kaneland girls volleyball coach Cynthia Violett will know a great deal about her team prior to the start of Northern Illinois Big XII Conference action next week against DeKalb and Sycamore. However, Violett, who is back at the helm she once held at Kaneland from 1994-2002, already has a good idea of where her team stands. The Knights’ convincing 25-13, 25-9 nonconference victory over Illinois Math & Science Academy (1-10) Thursday night in Maple Park capped a week that included a win over perennial power Montini.

    Girls volleyball Warren d. Mundelein: Lindsey Biedron served 8 of 8 with 1 ace, hit 15 of 16 with 6 kills and posted 3 blocks, as the Blue Devils won 25-17, 25-12 in North Suburban Lake Division action. Jenna Walczak added 4 kills and 3 blocks for Warren (10-4, 2-0), while Lauren Frericks served 7 of 7 with 1 ace, slammed 5 kills and set 20 of 20 with 7 assists. Natalie McNally chipped in 4 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace for the Blue Devils, and Kim Hengesh contributed 2 kills and 4 blocks.

     
  • St. Edward outlasts IC Catholic in marathon Sep 11, 2014 11:26 PM
    St. Edward certainly had its resiliency and character tested on Thursday night and the Green Wave passed with flying colors. After letting 3 match points slip away and dropping the second game against IC Catholic Prep, St. Edward wasn’t about to let another opportunity pass it by. The Green Wave rallied back in Game 3 three to knock off the visiting Knights 25-23, 28-30, 25-17 in Metro Suburban West action in Elgin.

    Hersey’s girls volleyball team remained in a first-place tie with Wheeling in the Mid-Suburban East after defeating Elk Grove 25-13, 25-16 on Thursday night at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.
