    Anyone who spent time with former Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Roberts knew exactly how the Hall of Famer would end a conversation after one of the Bulldogs’ games. “Drive safe.” Those words came to mind last week following the tragic car accident that took the life of Jarred Harrell, the 21-year-old brother of Aurora Christian senior Jonathan Harrell.

     
  • ECC buys remaining Spartan Meadows land Jan 5, 2014 12:03 PM
    Elgin Community College recently purchased the remaining 41 acres of the former Spartan Meadows Golf Course for yet-to-be-determined expansion. The sale of the property, just south of the college’s campus at McLean Boulevard and Spartan Drive, was finalized last month. It culminates an $8 million deal struck almost a year ago with the city of Elgin for the land, said Sharon Konny, ECC vice president of business and finance.

    A tentative agreement for a new faculty contract at Elgin Community College was reached, officials said. Negotiating teams for the college’s faculty association — which represents 526 part-time and full-time instructors — and the college board reached a tentative agreement on Thursday for a new three-year contract. Details of the agreement will not be released until it is ratified by union members and the board of trustees.

  • Kaneland blitzes Hinckley-BR with big 3rd quarter Dec 17, 2013 10:53 PM
    Whatever frustration Kaneland took to the locker room trailing Hinckley-Big Rock by a point Tuesday night in Hinckley, the Knights let their play do the talking in the third quarter. Kaneland scored the first 20 points of the second half on its way to outscoring the Royals 31-2 in the third quarter. Two minutes into the fourth quarter Knights coach Brian Johnson had his third string on the court to finish up a 63-38 victory.

    Elgin Community College and Judson University both held commencement ceremonies over the weekend to send their graduates out into the world. ECC held their ceremony on Friday evening and Judson held two ceremonies Saturday honoring their graduates.

    The students named to the Daily Herald Leadership Team sometimes amaze even those who know them best. "I have never seen a student do what Sally did last year ... (she) organized an entire school and literally an entire community to hold a Relay For Life," writes Jonathan Young, a counselor at Central High School on behalf of his nominee, Sally Heyob. The 39 members of the 2013-14 Fox Valley Leadership team, both winners and honorable mentions, have that kind of drive in common.
