How can community college students get the full college experience while still living at home? Several recent Elgin Community College graduates shared their stories with the Daily Herald — and offered some advice to high school graduates heading to college themselves this fall.

    ECC grad embraces life’s ups and downs May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
    Karen Sarai Gonzalez came to the United States from Mexico when she was 16 years old knowing little English. Since then she has learned a new language, made new friends, become part of a second family, and earned a degree. Gonzalez was one of about 400 graduates honored at Elgin Community College Saturday, earning an associate of applied science degree in nursing.

    ECC Kids College offers summer enrichment May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
    Elgin Community College will host students 6 to 16 this summer in week-long day camps offering enrichment opportunities while school is out. Budding lawyers, astronauts, filmmakers, writers, interior designers, artists, chefs, video game makers, actors and musicians will have the chance to hone their skills during the fifth year of ECC's Kids College.

    Kaneland has decorated its left-field fence with softball decals featuring the names and numbers of its senior players. The Knights surely did it as a way to honor those seniors, though those big, oversized yellow softballs served a second purpose for Allyson O’Herron — target practice. The Kaneland shortstop, who was brilliant in the field all day, continued her hot hitting at the plate by lining a double off her name on that left-field fence in the Knights’ 4-0 victory over DeKalb.

     
  • District 300 first to offer fourth-year math course May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
    Seniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.

     
  • Waubonsee sells former downtown Aurora site May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
    Waubonsee Community College is selling its former downtown Aurora campus for $1.5 million to a firm interested in turning the two buildings into stores and apartments. The college board approved the sale Wednesday night to Gorman and Co. It expects to close the sale in January.

In NJCAA baseball, that's exactly what will happen starting Friday at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove as the top-seeded Chiefs take on No. 2 Harper College (19-20) for a regional championship.

    When Danny Heck was in eighth grade, he and his friends made an Indiana Jones movie with a camcorder. He had such a good time it prompted some research into the film industry and how one could go about breaking into it. Heck, now a senior at Hampshire High School, has worked with Nicole Thompson, the high school librarian, and the District 300 Foundation over the last year on videos for school and district events. "That's when I really knew that this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Heck said.

    Perhaps St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke should have figured this would be a challenging season when the team's annual trip to downstate Marion was shortened due to a late-March snowstorm. Whatever the case, it definitely has not been business as usual for the North Stars this season.

    One of the most successful regular seasons in area girls soccer came to a close Saturday when Rosary defeated St. Francis to win the Suburban Christian Conference title. Now all eyes move to the postseason. In the Class 3A tournament, St. Charles North, St. Charles East and Batavia grabbed the top three seeds in the Hoffman Estates sectional.

    Kaneland snares sectional title May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Kaneland girls track coach Doug Ecker says his team's goal going into a sectional meet is to qualify as many athletes as possible to the state meet. But earning a sectional championship is nice too. The Knights won the Class 2A Burlington Central sectional title Friday night with 83 points. Hampshire was second with 74. Burlington Central took third with 69 points.

    Kaneland bullying report falls short for some board members May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    An update on what a task force has been doing to address bullying in Kaneland schools got a mixed reception from the school board Wednesday. Two members criticized the task force for not having any students on it, and only one parent. And one of those board members also said he was "disappointed" in the work, because the actions recommended were not based on Kaneland-specific data about bullying.

    A 28-year-old Sycamore man faces felony charges that he had heroin in his system when he caused a Feb. 27 crash in Virgil Township that killed an 11-year-old boy. Benjamin J. Black was charged with aggravated DUI and, if found guilty, faces up to 14 years in prison after tests were returned, authorities said.

    Elgin's first Education Summit brought together about 180 people on Friday for what Elgin Mayor David Kaptain called "the largest community conversation" he's ever hosted. Educators, nonprofit agencies, business owners and other community members participated in the event spearheaded by Kaptain in partnership with Elgin Area School District U-46, Community Unit School District 301 and Elgin Community College.
