The Vernon Hills Park District staff is reaching out to residents in the district’s neighborhood parks this summer with staff and park board commissioners available to chat with resident on selected evening throughout the summer. The season’s first “park chat” is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4 at Torrey Pines Park, 520 Torrey Pines Way, Vernon Hills.

The Vernon Hills Park District will proceed with plans for a $2.5 million maintenance facility on village-owned property on the north end of Century Park, the largest in its system. The village board gave its informal approval but directed that neighbors be consulted on landscaping and screening details before a final vote is taken.

Sullivan fitness rooms moving Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The cardio and weight training rooms at the Vernon Hills Park District's Sullivan Community Center will close permanently on Saturday, Feb. 2, with the equipment being moved to the new Lakeview Fitness Center, the former YMCA, at 700 Lakeview Parkway.

Waukegan Y to close Monday Dec 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Lake County Family YMCA will close its two branch facilities in Vernon Hills and Waukegan on Monday, Dec. 31, due to financial difficulties. While the Vernon Hills branch will remain open as the Lakeside Fitness Center owned and operated by the Vernon Hills Park District, the Waukegan one was unable to find a savior.

The due dilligence date for the Vernon Hills Park District's pending purchase of the Central Lake YMCA has been extended as equipment leases, utility arrangments and other items are settled. Meanwhile, the district is making plans to replenish members and day care users, who have left since an announced closing by the YMCA. The facility has remained open as negotiations on the $2 million sale continue.

Vernon Hills village and park district officials have offered $1.4 million to buy the Central Lake YMCA in Vernon Hills. The fast track "expression of interest" is intended as a measure to keep the facility open beyond a previously announced closing date of Oct. 31. The Lake County Family YMCA, which also operates a facility in Waukegan, says it faces a $6 million debt and annual operating loss of $800,000.

"Things are going 1,000 miles an hour," said Jeff Fougerousse, executive director of the park district. "We need to do our due diligence before we put something before the Y and their board."
