    Ohio University sophomore Carly Manso was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its co-offensive player of the week. The former Vernon Hills standout scored her first goal of the season and provided a corner kick assist during a 3-2 double-overtime loss against Xavier.

    Justin Park had a long time to think about a long putt. The Vernon Hills sophomore refused to wear a long face, however. As he made the long walk back to the clubhouse when a rainstorm interrupted Mundelein’s invitational at Steeple Chase Golf Club on Saturday, instead of frowning, Park focused. He had lagged his putt 10 feet short on the hole on the par-4 13th when the rain came.

    With his exhausted defense on the sideline, Antioch football coach Brian Glashagel had an easy decision to make when his offense faced a critical fourth-and-1 from its own 40 late in the game. He had, after all, Griffin Hill, who had been tiring out Vernon Hills’ defense. Hill did more than pick up the first down. The electrifying junior running back busted off a 60-yard touchdown run with 2:34 left to extend a one-point lead, and visiting Antioch hung on for an exhausting, 42-40 win in a North Suburban Prairie Division thriller Friday night.

    Girls golf Carmel d. Vernon Hills: At Heather Ridge, the undefeated Corsairs shot a 173 to win for the second day in a row on the nine-hole layout, as Alexa Amato’s 40 led the way. Carmel (7-0) also counted Kyla Ryan’s 44, Erin Kehoe’s 44 and Danielle Savovich’s 45. Vernon Hills (192) was led by Faith Jung’s 45. Stevenson d. Deerfield: At Deerfield Golf Club, Alexia Fidman captured medalist honors with a 43, and the Patriots (181) defeated the Warriors (196). Myra Peterson and Olivia Hancock each shot a 45 for Stevenson. Grayslake d. Lakes: At Antioch Golf Course, Ireland Dunne shot a 44 to earn medalist honors and lead Grayslake’s co-op team (195) past the host Eagles (295). Dhani McDowell and Kara Ahlemeyer added a 48 and 49, respectively, while Kim Balling carded a 52. McHenry d. Grant: Brianna Burgeson shot a 48 for the Bulldogs (212) in their loss to the Warriors (193). Harvard d. Antioch: Hannah Cook shot a 55 for the Sequoits (261) in their loss to Harvard (213).

    The coaches and many fans at Thursday’s annual Volley For A Cure between St. Viator and Vernon Hills wore similar T-shirts. On the back they read, ‘Believe There Is Hope For A Cure.’ “That is a team effort,” said Lions senior Grace Fedus of the choice phrasing. “Everyone collaborates on it.” Sounds likes she is also talking about the sizzling start to the season for the Lions’ girls volleyball team. St. Viator ran its record to 12-2-1 with a hard-fought 25-23, 26-24 victory at the Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    Although Bill McNamara missed the “big game” in person, he found it just as much fun to watch on tape. McNamara is the head football coach at Stevenson. His team was busy playing a game against Warren last week at the same time his son Connor, the starting quarterback at Vernon Hills, was taking on North Chicago. The younger McNamara wound up taking part in a school-record 7 touchdowns in a 64-28 win. He rushed for 6 scores and threw for another.

    Boys soccer Vernon Hills 3, Wauconda 2: Sophomore Anakin Ruiz scored twice, as the Cougars won the North Suburban Prairie Division match. Ilya Kravtsev added a goal and an assist for Vernon Hills (6-4-1, 2-1-1), while Andre Szmyt also picked up an assist. Wauconda (3-7, 0-3) got goals from Teddy Kolarov and Luiz Mendoza. Christopher Fox and Giovanni Marquez notched assists for the Bulldogs.

    Vernon Hills wins: Vernon Hills defeated both Grant (26-29) and North Chicago (15-50). Vivian Overbeck of Vernon Hills took first place with an 18:33 while Grant’s top finisher was Madison Romig. She took third place with a 19:03. Stevenson wins: Stevenson defeated Antioch (18-45), Mundelein (17-44) and Round Lake (18-45) at Half Day Forest Preserve. Isabelle Sparreo of Stevenson took first place with an 18:11. Tessa Furlong of Antioch placed third with a 19:22 while Luvia Chavarria of Round Lake was fourth with a 19:28 and Abby Grein of Mundelein was sixth with a 19:52.

    Mundelein’s boys golf team is on a roll. And John Lentz was rolling in the putts Tuesday, as his 2-under-par 34 led the Mustangs to an impressive 145 at Pine Meadow Golf Club. The performance was good for a 14-stroke victory over Libertyville (159).

    The depth of Barrington’s boys golf team showed as the host team took top honors in the Ivanhoe Golf Classic on Monday. Cole Kempinski and Kevin Altenberger had the second-best rounds of the day at 76, with teammates Tim Lim (77), Burke Barsamian (78), Tom Calbi (80) and Joey Batliner (82) close behind.

    Girls golf Warren d. Lake Zurich: At Bittersweet, the host Blue Devils scored a 205-242 win in North Suburban Conference action. Erica Price led Warren with a 44, while Lake Zurich’s Aine Mattera was the medalist with a 37. Mundelein d. Vernon Hills: At Countryside, rain shortened the North Suburban match to six holes. The Mustangs’ score of 132 was good for a seven-stroke win over the Cougars. Megan Weise had a 31 for Mundelein, while Vernon Hills’ Kari Lee shot a 30.

    Megan Behrendt slammed 13 kills, while adding 15 digs and 3 blocks, as Lakes’ volleyball team outlasted Vernon Hills 25-16, 19-25, 25-16 in North Suburban Prairie Division action Tuesday night. Eagles setter Maddie Demo dished out 16 assists, serves 3 aces and totaled 15 digs, while McKenna Lahr contributed 7 kills, 10 digs and 3 aces. Lakes also received 13 digs from Morgan Phillips and 15 digs and 3 assists from Izzy Huntington. Tori Smith lofted 18 assists and registered 12 digs for Vernon Hills, which got 5 kills apiece from Sienna Spanglin and Kasey Firnbach. Jenna Joyce and Katie Brettman had 4 kills each for the Cougars, while Jenna Joyce posted 5 blocks. Firnbach also had 20 digs and 4 blocks. New Trier d. Stevenson: Isabella Milejczyk and Jori Radtke each had 9 kills for the Patriots, who dropped their nonconference match 25-23, 22-25, 25-19. Jordyn Taborek and Corissa Kurth added 5 and 3 kills, respectively, for Stevenson (6-7). Milejczyk also served 4 aces, while Morgan Berland chslked 20 digs. Radtke also had 2 solo and 2 assisted blocks. Grayslake North d. Hampshire: The visiting Knights won 25-15, 25-20 in Fox Valley Fox Division play.
