  • Emotional successes for Saucedo, Libertyville Nov 15, 2014 9:18 PM
Once she could see the scoreboard, the reaction was self-explanatory. Libertyville sophomore Lucy Saucedo broke down into tears after seeing her time in the 50-yard freestyle was right at state qualifying cut of 24.59 seconds, which means for the first time in her young career she will head to the state finals next weekend at Evanston Township High School. “I was just trying to break 25 seconds, and when a friend brought my glasses to me in the pool and I could see I qualified, I lost it,” said Saucedo, who later joined teammates Emma Richert, Anne Barnett and Harriet Davies on state-qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “We’ve been working on sprints and less breathing. • St. Francis stops Wauconda’s postseason journey Nov 6, 2014 9:49 PM
The magical ride for Wauconda’s girls volleyball team ended on Thursday night, but the girls on this team wore smiles after their match with powerhouse St. Francis. “I think we are holding back,’’ said Wauconda middle hitter, Sara Sexton. “This is the furthest we’ve gone in 10 years.” Indeed. This Bulldogs team wasn’t even supposed to beat Prairie Division power Lakes. And Wauconda clearly wasn’t likely to knock off 30-game winner Wheaton Academy in the Class 3A sectional opener at Vernon Hills. Yet this Bulldogs team kept on winning. “We found our way,’’ Sexton said. “We got along and played together.” The end of the season came at the hands of 35-4 St. Francis as Wauconda fell 25-14, 25-12. The Spartans advance to a Class 3A supersectional date against Marian Central at 1 p.m. Saturday at Belvidere High School.

  • Vernon Hills, Grayslake Central headed to state Nov 1, 2014 7:30 PM
Perhaps it was the cold, the wind, or the flat course that led to the fast first mile pace at the Kaneland sectional. Or maybe it was just the strategy of the two senior brothers from Yorkville. Either way, the fast start led to new personal records for some of the runners, or a learning experience for those who couldn’t adjust to the pace.

  • Boys cross country: Lake Zurich earns downstate trip Nov 1, 2014 5:50 PM
As is always the case, there was nothing left to chance, and no room for error Saturday morning in the Class 3A Schaumburg boys cross country sectional. When all was said and done, a 20-year old course record was broken and a Lake County area squad would be heading to the state meet for the seventh straight year. Temperatures in the upper 30’s made for a very fast 3-mile race at Busse Woods as McHenry senior Jesse Reiser set the course record in 14:32 to break the 1994 record of Prospect’s Lou Petricca by three seconds. Hersey captured the championship with 92 points to topple McHenry (109 points) in second place. Barrington took third place with 143 pointswhile Lake Zurich made it seven straight trips to Peoria’s Detweiller Park with a fourth-place score of 158 points. • Top-seeded Stevenson gears up for playoffs Oct 25, 2014 11:39 PM
There have been undefeated football seasons at Stevenson in the past. There have also been too many conference titles to count and a 26-year consecutive playoff streak that is among the best in the state. But one item is missing from Stevenson’s resume, and it’s a pretty big one at that: a state championship. With one of their best teams in program history, the Patriots are hoping to finally add that elusive piece of hardware to their trophy case, and on Saturday night they learned the path they’ll have to take to do so. The IHSA announced the 256 teams across eight classes that make up its state playoff field. At 9-0, Stevenson was the top-ranked team in Class 8A and will face No. 16 Lyons (5-4) in Lincolnshire.
