  • Illinois-Chicago holds on to beat Detroit 63-59 Dec 29, 2011 9:46 PM
    Gary Talton scored a career-high 21 points, including all eight of his team's points during a seven-minute stretch of the second half, to lead Illinois-Chicago to a 63-59 victory Thursday over Detroit. Talton hit five free throws and a 3-pointer to help the Flames (5-8, 1-2 Horizon) keep pace and ultimately take a 60-57 lead with 3:12 remaining. Daniel Barnes, who had 13 points, added a free throw before the Titans (6-9, 0-3) cut it to 61-59 on a Doug Anderson dunk with 49 seconds left. Detroit had a chance to tie when Talton fouled Jason Calliste with three seconds left, but Calliste missed the front end of a one-and-one. Barnes got the rebound and hit two free throws to seal the win. The Titans came into the game shooting a Horizon-leading 73 percent from the free-throw line. Chase Simon led Detroit with 14 points, and Eli Holman scored 12.

  • Dayton beats Illinois-Chicago 64-57 Dec 23, 2011 8:39 PM
    DAYTON, Ohio — Josh Benson scored 13 points and helped lead a 17-0 run to give Dayton a 64-57 win over Illinois-Chicago on Friday night. Dayton (9-4) trailed 32-24 with 1:31 to go until halftime and scored 17 straight stretching into the second half. Devin Oliver started the run with a 3-pointer, and after grabbing an offensive rebound he put back a dunk with 36 seconds left in the half to pull the Flyers within three, 32-29. Dayton opened the second half with nine straight points to go up 41-32 and didn’t trail the rest of the way. Benson scored six points during that spurt. Kevin Dillard chipped in 11 points for the Flyers, who got back on the winning track after falling to Seton Hall on Wednesday. Dayton has won four of its last five. Daniel Barnes led the Flames (4-8) with 17 points.

    Gonzaga (5-0) at Illinois (7-0) When: 2:15 p.m. at Assembly Hall TV: ESPN2 The skinny: No. 19 Gonzaga should be a good test for the undefeated Illini. The Zags lost top scorer Matt Bouldin, but return six of their top eight players. This year’s squad is led by 7-0 C Robert Sacre (16.6 ppg) and 6-1 G Kevin Pangos (15.0 ppg). PG Sam Maniscalco, a transfer from Bradley, has been a sensation for Illinois. He is the team’s top scorer at 13.3 points and is shooting 54.7 percent from the field. UIC (2-4) at Milwaukee (6-1) When: 1 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Arena Radio: WMVP 1000-AM The skinny: UIC had a lead with less than two minutes remaining, but ended up losing at Green Bay 71-68 on Thursday. Starting guards Daniel Barnes and Gary Talton combined to score 31 points. Milwaukee held Loyola to just 41 points on Thursday and is limiting opponents to 37.1-percent shooting on the season. Loyola (1-5) at Green Bay (3-4) When: 7 p.m. at the Resch Center The skinny: This game finishes a stretch of Loyola playing seven of its first eight on the road. The Ramblers lost at Milwaukee 59-41 on Thursday as Ben Avercamp and Walt Gibler combined to score 25 of the 41 points. Loyola was out-rebounded 42-20. Green Bay edged UIC 71-68 on Thursday. Nebraska-Omaha (2-5) at Northern Illinois (0-6) When: 3 p.m. at NIU Convocation Center The skinny: The Mountain time zone wasn’t any friendlier to NIU, as the Huskies dropped games at Boise State and Utah Valley last week. NIU is shooting .351 from the field as a team, while freshman guard Abdel Nader is the top scorer at 11.3 ppg. Omaha is led by 6-4 senior Mitch Albers at 19.4 ppg. — Mike McGraw

    GREEN BAY, Wis. — Alec Brown scored 17 points and Wisconsin-Green Bay rallied to beat Illinois-Chicago 71-68 on Thursday night. The game was the Horizon League opener for both schools. Green Bay scored eight of the game’s last 10 points after UIC had its biggest lead at 66-63 with 2:12 remaining. Terry Johnson and Brennan Cougill had 12 points each for the Phoenix (3-4), while Kam Cerroni scored 11. Daniel Barnes had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Flames (2-4). Gary Talton had 14 points and four assists, while Darrin Williams had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

    Fordham (1-1) at Loyola (0-4) When: 3 p.m. at Gentile Arena The skinny: This game marks the grand reopening of a renovated Gentile Arena. The building now includes 1,600 chair back seats, an overhead scoreboard with video, along with improved lightning, sound, locker rooms and concession stands. While construction was being completed, the Ramblers went 0-4 on the road but were competitive in each contest. Loyola has four players averaging in double figures, led by Ben Averkamp and Walt Gibler at 11.0 points. UIC (2-2) at Toledo (3-1) When: 6 p.m. at Savage Arena Radio: WMVP 1000-AM The skinny: UIC recorded a 79-75 home win over Evansville on Wednesday. Freshman guard Marc Brown scored 24 points and went 5-for-5 from 3-point range, while 6-8 sophomore Hayden Humes, a transfer from Toledo, added 18 points. UIC beat the Rockets twice last season and is 5-0 in the all-time series. Northern Illinois (0-4) at Boise State (3-1) When: 8 p.m. at Taco Bell Arena The skinny: NIU has been suffering through growing pains with young players. Freshmen have played 57.1 percent of the minutes this season. As a team, the Huskies are shooting 32.9 percent from the field overall and 23.6 percent from 3-point range. These teams met in DeKalb last season with Boise State winning 80-51. — Mike McGraw

  • Late run powers Quincy over UIC, 65-61 Nov 19, 2011 7:29 PM
    Courtney Belger had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Quincy used a late 8-0 run to defeat Illinois-Chicago 65-61 on Saturday. The Division II Hawks (2-0) got 11 points apiece from Ricardo Carbajal and Austin Weber. Daniel Barnes led the Flames (1-2) with 17 points, and Gary Talton scored 13. The Hawks forged their largest lead at 29-18 late in the first half and led 35-28 at intermission. Illinois-Chicago fought back and led 49-45 after two free throws by Hayden Humes with 8:01 left. But the winning surge, including a free throw by Carbajal that put Quincy ahead to stay, propelled the Hawks to a 53-49 advantage with 4:27 left. The Hawks sank eight consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal it. Though outrebounded 35-29, Quincy outshot the Flames 47 percent to 40 and shot 86 percent from the line to Illinois-Chicago’s 62.

    Quincy (1-0) at UIC (1-1) When: 3 p.m. at UIC Pavilion Radio: WMVP 1000-AM The skinny: It wasn’t the most feared opponent in college basketball, but UIC got in the win column Wednesday with a 59-42 victory over Roosevelt. Senior center Darrin Williams scored a career-high 18 points, to go with 12 rebounds. Quincy, which plays in Division II, won its home opener against Hannibal-LaGrange. Former Glenbrook North shooting guard Austin Weber started for the Hawks. — Mike McGraw

    Loyola (0-2) at Eastern Illinois (0-1) When: 7 p.m. at Lantz Arena The skinny: Loyola hasn’t started 0-3 since the 1921-22 season, but that streak is in danger as the Ramblers open with their third straight road game. The renovation of Gentile Arena is expected to be complete in time for the Nov. 26 home opener. Loyola lost at Kansas State 74-61 on Monday despite 19 points from junior forward Ben Avercamp. Eastern Illinois is led by senior guard Jeremy Granger (Elgin H.S.), who scored 26 points in a 79-72 loss at Indiana State. Roosevelt (0-2) at UIC (0-1) When: 7 p.m. at UIC Pavilion Radio: WMVP 1000-AM The skinny: The Flames got a nice performance from 6-7 senior Paris Carter (19 points, 11 rebounds), but they faded down the stretch of a season-opening 68-57 loss at Eastern Michigan last Friday. Roosevelt is in its second year as an NAIA program. The Lakers’ first- and third-leading scorers are brothers Paul and Mark Tometich, who attended Cary-Grove High School. — Mike McGraw

  • Illinois-Chicago defeats Roosevelt 59-42 Nov 16, 2011 10:10 PM
    Darrin Williams had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Illinois-Chicago to a 59-42 win over Roosevelt Wednesday night. Greg Travis scored 14 points and Daniel Barnes had 11 for the Flames (1-1), who were playing their home opener. They led 27-19 at halftime against the NAIA school. Paul Tometich led the Lakers (0-3) with 13 points. Elliott Vaughn had nine points and 10 rebounds and Brandyn Denson had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for Roosevelt. UIC shot 36 percent from the field, while Roosevelt made just 23 percent of its shots (14 of 60).
