Atanus won the GOP primary Tuesday with a 1,400-vote margin and expressed hope the party would come around and back her in the general election against Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Those hopes were dashed this week by both the Cook County GOP and the state party. “The Cook County Republican Organization believes that Atanus should drop out of the race,” said Chairman Aaron Del Mar.

  • Oberweis sets sights on uphill fight against Durbin Mar 19, 2014 7:35 AM
In an unexpectedly close race, state Sen. Jim Oberweis, a senator and dairy magnate from Sugar Grove, beat insurance executive Doug Truax in the Republican primary. “If I win this Senate seat, it'd be so the Republicans can take control of the U.S. Senate, and that will change the direction of this country,” he said.

Polls are open until 7 p.m. Cook County Clerk David Orr spokeswoman Courtney Greve said the early hours of voting in the suburbs had been going relatively smoothly, with scant calls from poll watchers and no obvious complaints yet.

  • 8th District primary among suburbs’ hottest races Mar 16, 2014 8:00 AM
Eighth Congressional District GOP rivals Manju Goel and Larry Kaifesh started their campaigns seeing eye to eye on most every major issue. Distinctions between the two boiled down to their professional backgrounds. But these personal differences quickly escalated into much more. That's among several key races Northwest suburban voters will be deciding in Tuesday's primary.
