Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

  • Cary-Grove finally gets to Huntley May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
It takes a special performance to upset the high-powered offense of Cary-Grove's softball team, and Huntley freshman pitcher Haley Spannraft nearly had one of those afternoons. Unfortunately for No. 4 Huntley, it was almost. Through 5 innings, Spannraft worked on what could have been a gem to remember, giving it her all during a 4-hit shutout. Cary-Grove, the Class 4A Huntley regional top seed, failed to get runners in scoring position across in the first, fourth and fifth innings. But Cary-Grove's bats came alive in the sixth. The Trojans capitalized on an error on Jamie Deering's pop fly to left, which opened up the flood gates to a 4-run inning that saw Lindsay Efflandt drive in the first and winning run on a single to lift Cary-Grove into Saturday's regional final with a 4-0 win in Huntley Tuesday afternoon.
