  • Barrington wins, with help, at McHenry Feb 8, 2014 9:09 PM
    For a while, it looked as if the expected race for the big trophy would not materialize between favored Deerfield and challengers Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South and host McHenry. As it turned out, Lake Zurich which was just a click behind Deerfield nearly two hours into the Class 3A regional. But a funny thing happened on the way to the round of wrestleback semifinals — so funny that Barrington coach Ken Hoving finally managed a small grin when he saw his club pull within reach of Deerfield, trailing just 119-113 in advance of the medal round. Later, after celebrating individual titles from Matt Stathakis (103, 29-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 29-10) and saying thank you to his FVC coaching counterparts for their help along the way, Hoving broke into a broad smile midway through the finals when the scoreboard flashed his Broncos were now atop the leaderboard at 146.0-136.5. Five weights later, and after a trio of second-place finishes, the Broncos got one last bit of help at 195 as Ryan Grannemann of McHenry defeated Christo Moran of Deerfield 4-1, helping get the Broncos a fourth straight regional championship.

     
  • Huntley clinches FVC Valley title outright Feb 8, 2014 11:00 PM
    The Huntley girls basketball team clinched the outright championship of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division Saturday with a 69-34 win over Jacobs in Algonquin. The title is Huntley’s first in girls basketball in the FVC. The Red Raiders last won a conference crown in 2002-03, their last year of competition in the Big Northern Conference.

     
  • Boys basketball/Fox Valley roundup Feb 7, 2014 11:45 PM
    Westminster Christian 48, IMSA 37: The Warriors (12-10) defeated IMSA during first round action of the NAC Tournament. Robert Kleczynski led Westminster with 13 points, while Brad Barker scored 12 points. “Great job defensively. This is a pretty good win for us,” said Westminster Christian Coach Bruce Firchau. Burlington Central 58, Genoa-Kingston 49: The Rockets (16-6, 6-2) beat the Cogs during Big Northern East competition Friday. Sean Fitzgerald led all scorers with 19 points, including 5 3-pointers. Reed Hunnicutt finished with 11 points and James Raney scored 10 for the Rockets. Cary-Grove 47, Prairie Ridge 38: Jason Gregoire’s 25 points helped the Trojans (12-9, 5-3) defeat Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action. Tyler Szydlo also did well for Cary-Grove, scoring 13 points. Christian Life 65, Harvest Christian 62: Despite John Vislisel’s 30 points, the Lions (9-11) lost in the first round of the NAC Tournament. Noah Fox scored 19 points for the Lions.

  • South Elgin, Streamwood on collision course again Feb 7, 2014 8:36 PM
    If seeds hold, Fox Valley area girls basketball fans could be in for a treat come regional final Thursday in Class 3A and Class 4A. The IHSA released pairings for the postseason on Friday and in Class 4A, South Elgin and Streamwood could meet for the third straight year in a regional final, this time at Jacobs. The Sabres beat South Elgin last year before advancing to the sectional finals and falling to Huntley. In 2012, South Elgin beat Streamwood in the regional final before losing to Cary-Grove in the sectional semifinals.

     
  • S. Elgin, Huntley, Burlington C. draw top seeds Feb 6, 2014 9:09 PM
    There were few surprises Thursday when the IHSA released the seeds for the upcoming Class 3A and Class 4A girls basketball postseason. In Class 4A, all Fox Valley area teams feed into the Judson University supersectional, which will be hosted by Westminster Christian. Sectional winners from Addison Trail and Crystal Lake South will meet in that Elite Eight game.

     
  • Jacobs, Dundee-Crown looking for postseason success Feb 6, 2014 7:39 PM
    This year’s IHSA girls’ bowling state series features a new twist. A regional level of competition has been added where the top 4 teams in each regional and the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the sectional round. Regionals get underway Saturday morning. District 300 neighbors Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are two Fox Valley-area teams looking to carry over regular-season success into the new postseason format.

     
  • Larkin will honor St. John Friday night Feb 6, 2014 10:26 PM
    Elgin-area superfan Dave St. John will be recognized at halftime of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Larkin and Elgin for his unwavering support of the athletic programs of each high school. St. John, 77, has deep ties to both schools. He is a 1954 graduate of Elgin High, where he met his wife, Nila (Class of ‘56). The couple’s five sons later attended Larkin. Three played sports. St. John soon became a fixture at Larkin sporting events. He even worked the chains for Royals home football games for 10 years. “That’s when I got hooked,” he said.

     
  • No injuries in Cary basement fire Feb 5, 2014 10:05 PM
    No injuries were reported after a basement fire Wednesday night in Cary, authorities said. Cary firefighters responded to the home on the 300 block of East Sherwood Drive just after 6 p.m., and the fire was extinguished 15 minutes after firefighters arrived, according to the Cary Fire Protection District.

     
  • Rafferty in fine form; Prairie Ridge wins at Lake Park Feb 5, 2014 10:54 PM
    Elk Grove’s Amelia Rafferty started the season on the sidelines, but the Grenadiers senior came back with a vengeance. Rafferty injured her right hand in early November and did not return to the gym until late December, but she more than made up for lost time on Wednesday at the Lake Park regional. Rafferty was in a zone from start to finish in taking second place in the all-around (37.825). Prairie Ridge co-op was also locked in, securing the regional title with an impressive 148.375l points in Roselle.

    Bartlett 65, East Aurora 24: On Senior Night, Liz Arco had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Ally Giampapa added 11 points to lead the Hawks to an Upstate Eight Valley win. Lauren Janczak (15 points) and Kaitlin Brohan (10 points, 4 steals) also contributed for Bartlett (15-10, 8-3). Hampshire 58, Woodstock 36: Sara Finn and Emma Benoit each had 18 points to lead the Whip-Purs (9-13, 4-7) to a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win. Tricia Dumoulin added 8 points for the winners. Cary-Grove 33, Jacobs 16: Sarah Kendeigh scored 10 points and Katie Barker added 8 to lead Cary-Grove (15-10, 6-5) in the FVC Valley. Talia Surges and Carly Sidor each had 4 points for Jacobs (5-19, 2-8). Harvest Christian 45, Keith 4: Kylee Knox had 13 points and Gabi Rodriguez added 11 points and 9 rebounds to lead Harvest (13-9, 7-2) in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. Prairie Ridge 55, Dundee-Crown 45: Jesenia Laboy had 19 points and Emily Michalski added 8 for Dundee-Crown (7-18, 2-9) in the FVC Valley.

     
  • Dundee-Crown knocks off Cary-Grove Feb 4, 2014 10:41 PM
    Lance Huber and his Dundee-Crown Chargers could finally crack a smile. Breaking a 6-game losing streak and winning for the first time in 2014 and in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play, D-C hung on for a 46-45 boys basketball win over Cary-Grove Tuesday night in Carpentersville.

  • Crystal Lake South happy with FVC runner-up finish Feb 1, 2014 8:03 PM
    Sure, Crystal Lake South coach Ross Ryan would like to have hoisted the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament championship trophy Saturday at McHenry High School. But Ryan was happy with his team’s second place conference finish. Wrestling without 195-pounder Brian Pence, the Gators (163 ½ points) were runner-up to Crystal Lake Central, which claimed top honors with 199 points. Cary-Grove was third a half point behind South with 163 points.

    Plenty of suburban high schools have made the finals of the IHSA state competitive dance championships, which will be held Saturday in Bloomington. Ninety teams qualified to go downstate, but now only 30 remain.

    Hampshire 52, Woodstock North 39: The Whip-Purs (8-13, 3-7) snapped a five-game losing streak with a win on the road in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play. Sara Finn led Hampshire with 14 points. Becky Dumoulin and Emma Benoit finished with 11 and 12 respectively. Neuqua Valley 64, Bartlett 42: Kaitlin Brohan had 19-points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals to lead Bartlett (14-10, 7-3) in the Upstate Eight Valley. Shelly Lyjack added 10 points for the Hawks. Cary-Grove 63, McHenry 35: Katie Barker led the Trojans (14-10, 5-5) with 22 points in the FVC Valley win. Sarah Kendeigh finished with 11-points while teammate Abby Jakubicek had 10 for Cary-Grove. Burlington Central 53, Richmond-Burton 24: Sam Pryor led Burlington Central (16-4, 7-0) with 14 points in the Big Northern East. Kayla Ross added 11 points with 4 assists and 2 steals for BC.

     
  • McHenry holds slim lead in FVC tournament Jan 31, 2014 11:26 PM
    McHenry will head into the final day of the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament just ahead of Crystal Lake Central and CL South when action resumes Saturday morning, beginning with the semifinal round at the Warriors’ West campus. Both Central and South trail McHenry by 4.5 points, 88.5 — 84.0, while Dundee-Crown and Huntley round out the top 5 with 75 and 71 overall points. Cary-Grove stands sixth with 70 points.
