  • Big Tuesday night on tap in Fox Valley Jan 13, 2014 8:21 PM
It may not qualify as “rivalry night” across the board but it most definitely is an interesting and busy Tuesday around the Fox Valley in girls basketball. There are two rivalry games on tap — Bartlett at Streamwood and Dundee-Crown at Jacobs — as well as three other games that should draw some fan interest, one of which could have some conference implications to it.

The 13-year veteran didn’t need to worry. Jumping off to an 11-2 start, the Gators held off a valiant Cary-Grove comeback, then outscored the Trojans 11-5 in overtime in posting a 55-49 win.

Darius Wells nailed 5 3-pointers to go with his game-high 23 points while Matt Smith (21 points) and Matt McClure (20 points) combined for 64 points to help South Elgin out of a 15-2 first quarter hole. Burlington Central 70, Richmond-Burton 46: In Big Northern East action, Sean Fitzgerald poured in a game-high 21 points on 6 3-pointers for the Rockets (11-4, 3-1) in their 24-point rout of the visiting Rockets (10-3). • Crystal Lake South holds off Cary-Grove Jan 9, 2014 10:34 PM
Much is made of the trio of Nick Gil, Eric Barone and Brian Pence when speaking of Crystal Lake South wrestling — and why not? This group headed by the No. 2 rated senior Gil has amassed a dazzling 71-11 record thus far, with Gil fresh off a championship ring at the prestigious Dvorak Invite during the holiday break. But while keeping an eye on these three, one had better not overlook the rest of the Gators’ lineup, which Thursday night in Cary-Grove proved to be the difference down the stretch during a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division dual thriller before a big Senior Night crowd. With Nick Dorn (182), Hunter Stroh (195) and Roland Gastfield (220) leading the charge, the visiting Gators outlasted their hosts 35-25 to stay within striking distance of McHenry with a perfect 4-0-0 record heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

  • Time to get these conference races restarted Jan 7, 2014 8:38 PM
While the teenagers who play girls basketball around the Fox Valley may have been happy about a couple extra days off school, coaches surely were champing at the bit the last two days to get the season restarted. But Mother Nature took care of that. And even though I was missing all the subzero cold while vacationing in Florida, I too am anxious to get the second half of the season going, because the first half has provided enough excitement to lead us to believe the 2014 portion of the campaign is going to be an interesting one.

Jason Gregoire scored 26 points to lead the Trojans (6-6) into the consolation championship game against South Elgin at 4:30 p.m. “It was a really good team win,” Gregoire said. “It was a big win because we lost to them before so we really came out with a chip on our shoulder. We really wanted to win this game. I thought we locked down on defense and that was the reason why.” The victory was the third straight for the Trojans, who limited their opponent to a season-low 34 points for the second straight game. “Defensively, we got back and we didn’t want to press,” Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle said. “We just said let’s be good, be solid in the half court and not let them penetrate. We switched all screens and they really couldn’t attack us very well. And we got on the glass. The first time we played they just murdered us on the glass.” Junior guard Tramone Hudson led Lakes (4-8) with 11 points. The Eagles will face Crystal Lake South for seventh place at 3 p.m. “The first 3 games (of the tournament) we’ve shown some good things, but this was a setback, obviously,” Lakes coach Chris Snyder said. “Being a young team, we just weren’t ready for Cary-Grove in terms of energy.
