  • Pieces falling into place for Barrington May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
A “work in progress” is the way Mia Calamari described Barrington’s set pieces. They worked pretty good Tuesday night. The Fillies scored their first two goals directly off set pieces en route to a 5-0 victory over Huntley in the Class 3A Jacobs girls soccer sectional semifinals in Algonquin.

  • Jacobs stuns top-seeded Cary-Grove May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Technically, Jacobs was the visiting team, despite hosting the Class 4A softball regional. But despite batting first in every inning, the Golden Eagles made themselves right at home. They scored 8 times in the first two innings and cruised past top-seeded Cary-Grove, 10-3, Tuesday in Algonquin. Freshman Emily Borg homered twice, doubled, and drove in 5 runs, fellow freshman Sarah Murray also homered, and Kelsey Peters shut the Trojans out through 6 innings for Jacobs, which will play in Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional title game against Wednesday’s DeKalb-Huntley winner. Jacobs advanced to the Elite Eight last season.

  • This painting by Army veteran Michael J. Duffy shows the beauty of the Xuan Loc rubber plantation during the war in Vietnam. But the towering trees appear almost as bars on a prison for the artillery forces driving into the jungle, Duffy says.

Cary businessman turned war's terrors into art May 19, 2013 12:00 AM

  • Huntley’s Omo Tseumah wins the high jump Saturday at the Class 3A girls state track and field finals at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Huntley’s Tseumah state high jump champ May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Omo Tseumah took a calculated gamble. But it paid off handsomely for the Huntley senior in her return engagement with Lyons Township sophomore Emma Haugen. Last year at the girls Class 3A state track and field meet, Haugen defeated Tseumah for the championship in the high jump. Tseumah made a bold move as the two dueled once again on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University. "I decided to skip 5-(feet)-5," Tseumah said. The Marquette-bound senior then made her three following heights at 5-6, 5-7 and 5-8.

  • Grant garners first sectional title May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant boys track and field coach Tom Evans spent Friday evening watching a parade of his Bulldogs qualify for next week's state meet in Charleston, but he continued pacing the infield nervously once the final event of the Class 3A Huntley sectional had concluded. Runner-up sectional finishes the previous two seasons tend to have that effect on a coach. Moments later his nervousness was replaced by excitement and pride as the North Suburban Conference champions were announced as sectional champions for the first time in school history. Grant garnered 83 team points to run away from Fox Valley Conference champion Huntley and NIC-10 Conference champion Belvidere North, which finished tied with 56 points.

  • Cary-Grove ‘Levels’ Crystal Lake South May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Cory Levels knew exactly what was on the line. The Cary-Grove senior realized if she scored a shootout goal the Trojans would capture the Class 3A Crystal Lake South regional championship. Levels got the job done. Her goal gave the second-seeded Trojans a 2-1 shootout win over top-seeded Crystal South in Friday's regional title game.

  • Huntley’s Anthonia Moore strains to finish third in her heat of the 400 meter dash Friday at the Class 3A girls state track and field preliminaries at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Moore qualified for today’s finals.

    Jacobs 3,200 relay team Friday’s fastest May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
The Jacobs 3,200-meter relay team made quite a statement Friday at the Class 3A state girls track and field finals in Charleston. The quartet of Molly Barnes, Tori Tamburrino, Sam Baran and Lauren VanVlierbergen won its heat and clocked the fastest time of all 3A teams at 9:16.19. The Golden Eagles will take a shot at school history in today's finals. No Jacobs girls individual or relay team has won a track state title. LaShawna Canty came the closest taking second in the high jump in 1998 and 1999.

  • Wheaton Warrenville South’s Emma Dalan cries and hugs 1,600-meter relay teammate Helen Majer as leadoff runner Jessica Spera joins them Friday at the Class 3A girls state track and field preliminaries at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Dalan fell and dropped the baton as she approached Majer for the handoff, and had to retrieve it while Majer waited in her lane.

Burlington Central’s Trupp seeking more May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Burlington Central senior Katie Trupp is no stranger to the girls track and field state finals podium. As a freshman she took fifth in the state in high jump and followed that up with a pair of medals sophomore year in the pole vault (sixth) and high jump (seventh). Class 1A preliminaries start today, while Class 2A and 3A action gets under way Friday.
