Cary-Grove’s Cullen the man at Barrington Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
How do you improve on perfection? Don’t ask Michael Cullen, because the Cary-Grove sophomore still feels he’s a long way from being there. Of course his opponents might feel a little differently if they were asked. Another simply smashing performance from Cullen was put in the books following a dominating 11-1 major decision in his 113-pound final against Colin Kenyon (New Trier, 33-8) at the Class 3A Barrington sectional Saturday. The win sends the Trojans’ star into the 3A state tournament on the front foot, and a well-deserved top 4 seed when things begin Thursday on the big floor of Assembly Hall in Champaign. Cullen (42-0) will be joined by teammate Michael Underwood (138) and Logan Hanselmann (120) both for the first time, after each won in dramatic style in their afternoon state qualifying bouts.

Cary-Grove tops Grayslake North in FVC ‘championship’ game Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley Conference may continue to choose not to call it a championship game, but don’t tell that to the players or coaches from Cary-Grove and Grayslake North. The Trojans and Knights played with all the intensity of any championship affair Friday night when the FVC division champions met in Cary-Grove’s Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. And when all was said and done, Cary-Grove’s girls basketball team had come away with its third straight “unofficial” FVC crown after holding off the Knights 56-48. “It was definitely one of our goals to make it to the crossover championship game,” said Cary-Grove senior Olivia Jakubicek, who scored a game-high 24 points for the Trojans. “Even though they don’t call it a championship game we wanted to give a championship effort.”

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

Cary-Grove tops Huntley for 4th straight FVC Valley title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove needed a quick pick-me-up since it was down 9 points to visiting Huntley and only 5:36 remained in regulation of Saturday afternoon’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball title showdown at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert used a timeout to get his players, who were trying to claim a fourth straight conference championship, to visualize the positive potential of a situation which could have easily fostered overwhelming negativity. “The most important thing was staying positive and not getting down about them scoring and being down nine,” said Trojans’ senior Joslyn Nicholson. “Coach told us to imagine how cool it was going to be after we pull this one out in five minutes.” OK, so Saffert was quite on the mark in terms of time. But the Trojans (19-6, 10-1) managed to force overtime and went on to clinch at least a share of their 12th conference crown with a 50-44 victory over the Red Raiders (21-5, 10-2).

Barrington saves best — Calamari — for last Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
For the second consecutive weekend, Barrington found a novel way to win. The latest came Saturday, when the Broncos saved their best performance for last — in the person of Ben Calamari. After their sensational final round at last Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League tournament that broke open a tight race en route to a third straight title, the Broncos rode a dramatic victory from Calamari in the final bout of a marathan Class 3A Lake Zurich regional to edge Deerfield by 1.5 points and capture a spot in the dual-team sectional later this month against Grant.
