State titles for Burlington, Cary-Grove’s Freeman May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
The dream of winning a state title was not lost on Burlington Central and seniors Mike Gulick and Clint Kliem Saturday in the Class 2A state finals at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium. In the finals of the 3,200-meter relay, Gulick and Kliem teamed with Matt O'Connor and Joe Gannon for a shot at the state title. O'Connor started the race just right for the Rockets, Gulick got them the lead and Gannon and Kliem never relinquished it. As he crossed the line in 7:48.31, the SIU-Edwardsville-bound Kliem tossed his arms in the air in almost disbelief.

Lombardino, Grant on track for big finish May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Grant discus standout Brandon Lombardino and the Bulldogs continued their terrific season by qualifying every competitor from the prelims into the boys track state finals. Senior Sean Wells made a statement in the hurdles events, qualifying comfortably in both. The Grand Valley State-bound Wells finished second in his heat in the 110 high hurdles (14.40) but his time was third-best among all competitors. He then took down one more hurdling record by winning his heat in the 300 hurdles in a blazing 38.09.

Blake, Freeman have banner days May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
While there was not a snowflake in sight on a near-100 degree day at O'Brien Field and Eastern Illinois University, it was Christmas Day for Jacobs senior Dom Blake. In the prelims of the Class 3A 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the state track and field championships, Blake raced as one of the top seeds in the event with the goal of making it to Saturday's finals. Into the final hurdles, Blake and Wheaton North senior Brett Kohler were neck-and-neck. Over the last hurdle, Blake clipped the hurdle slightly which caused him to lose his balance. Blake dove over the finish line and edged Kohler by .01 for a spot in Saturday's state finals, winning in 38.89.

Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).
