    For Lake Park to win a historic fifth straight boys track and field championship it must be a Saturday to remember. Friday’s Class 3A preliminaries of the boys track and field state finals ended with the Lancers advancing eight entries into Saturday’s finals, matching Neuqua Valley, York and Edwardsville, one more than both Downers Grove North and Thornton.

    Whether it has fully sunk in for Kevin Barbian doesn’t really matter. All that matters for the Libertyville senior is that he has put together back-to-back performances the last two weeks that has him in position to earn medals in the shot put and discus. A little over a month ago, Barbian was stuck in the 40s in the shot put and 140s in the discus. Following his performance during the Class 3A prelims at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field, Barbian is in the 50-foot-plus and 160-foot-plus level that should earn him hardware today.

DeGeeter was hit during warm-ups at the sectional track and field meet at Elgin High School Friday. Speaking from his hospital bed at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, DeGeeter said his mind is still foggy from the medication, and his recollection of the event sketchy.

    Running a marathon might not be an exact science, but measuring a course is. Organizers of the Naperville Marathon recently took to bicycles to begin measuring and certifying this year’s 26.2- and 13.1-mile routes so the marathon can count as a qualifier for the prestigious Boston Marathon. “In theory, when we finish the course, it can be accurate within three inches,” Bixler said.

    A 42-year-old coach from Marmion Academy in Aurora suffered serious injuries Friday night after he was hit in the head with a 12-pound shot put at Elgin High School, officials said. Ed DeGeeter was listed in stable condition at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin Saturday night. “He’s doing a little bit better,” said Marmion Athletic Director Joe Chivari, who rode with DeGeeter in the ambulance. “ ... From what I was told, he was able to answer some questions.”
