Seventeen people have filed to run as write-in candidates in Kane County for the April 9 consolidated elections. Two more people have joined the Batavia 7th Ward race as write-in candidates, and another person has joined the Geneva Township clerk race.

Four Democratic candidates for Schaumburg Township offices have consolidated the appeals of their removal from the April 9 ballot into one case. They will appear together before a single Cook County circuit court judge at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Daley Center in Chicago.

A three-member electoral board ruled Monday that Douglas Raul Williams, a candidate for supervisor, trustee hopeful Steve Hall and highway commissioner candidate Jim Denomie can stay in the race.

After nearly 28 years with Elk Grove Township, Supervisor Nanci Vanderweel is stepping down at the end of her elected four-year term this April. “This has been very satisfying ... now, it’s time to move on and let somebody else sit here,” said the 75-year-old who became the first woman supervisor in the township’s 162-year history. She reflected this week on her long career in suburban politics, which started in the 1970s.

More Muslim candidates are running for elected office in the suburbs and a group called Project Mobilize is helping with training, networking, fundraising and resources to reach target demographics. "We wanted to be the vehicle to help those individuals gain leadership skills," group co-founder Reema Ahmad said. Running for office "gives friends and neighbors, and the public an opportunity to see American Muslims in the community in a light that they wouldn't otherwise be seen in from the media," said Junaid Afeef, who is running for Hoffman Estates Park Board.

Signatures gathered by incumbents running as a slate for reelection in Ela Township are being challenged by an opposing slate of candidates. The Ela Reform Party claims many of the signatures for the Ela First Party are questionable and if removed, the Ela First Party would not have enough to be on ballot.

A pair of objections were filed Thursday and Friday against the candidacies of all five Democrats seeking elected office in Schaumburg Township this spring. While one objection made the more common complaint that the candidates' statements of economic interest weren't properly filled out, the other charged that the candidates were slated by a new Democratic committeeman who hadn't been selected by proper procedure.
