    The Rosemont man shot and killed Wednesday who previously made headlines for sleeping on a state job reached an out-of-court settlement last year after suing the Illinois Tollway, officials said Thursday. Joseph Caffarello filed a nine-count federal lawsuit against the Tollway, Tollway Inspector General James Wagner and State Rep. Rita Mayfield in November 2013 after being fired for a third time from his job after he was caught napping by co-workers.

    Illinois Tollway officials say they expect nearly 17.6 million vehicles to use the northern Illinois interstate system during the next two weeks. That’s a slight increase compared to last year’s winter holiday season. The Tollway announced the estimate Friday and invited holiday travelers to stop for a cup of coffee on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve at Tollway oases. McDonald’s and 7-Eleven are offering free coffee at most Tollway oases overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

    The Hawthorn Woods village board has agreed that Mayor Joe Mancion can consult with an expert on an as-needed basis regarding the potential impact of a Route 53 extension through the villlage. Mancino is on the financial and land use committees that will make recommendaitons on funding and land uses to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.

    Starting Monday, there will be temporary, overnight ramp closures at the Route 47 interchange on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (Interstate 90). Crews will be installing and testing tolling equipment, closing one ramp at a time. Electronic message signs will alert drivers in advance of closures.

    At dawn today, wind willing, two hoists will lift a 190,000-pound beam from a waiting truck on the Jane Addams Tollway and heave it onto columns rising about 40 feet above the Fox River in Elgin. Two teams of ironworkers 170 feet apart will chatter on walkie talkies, calibrating the movement of the beam so it's in the right spot at the right time.
