Governor Pat Quinn on Saturday unveiled the "Portrait of a Soldier" exhibition at the Des Plaines Oasis. It's comprised of hand-drawn portraits of nearly of the 305 Illinois men and women who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as those who subsequently lost their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan or in U.S. combat service since the 2011 attacks.

Should tollway have “website of shame” for scofflaws? May 3, 2013 12:00 AM
The Illinois House Friday narrowly rejected a plan to set up a "website of shame" to display the names of scofflaws owing more than $1,000 in tollway fines. The proposal would require the Illinois Tollway to contact people who owed fines nine different times before posting their names on the website. "This is just an additional tool to embarrass people," said state Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie Democrat.

Tollway employees behaving badly. Toll authority investigators cracked down on a call center worker who offered to clear I-PASS debts for a price and a supervisor who slept on the job and picked on his underlings (not simultaneously), Inspector General Jim Wagner reported Thursday.

You can't yak on a hand-held cell phone in Illinois if you're a teenager, truck driver, passing through a school or construction zones, but otherwise it's OK. Except in Chicago. And, no texting and driving anywhere. The Illinois House moved to stop the confusion with legislation banning driving while talking on hand-held phones, but will the Senate follow suit?

Tollway transponder perk continuing for now after ruling Feb 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The free ride for tollway employees will continue as a result of a Illinois Labor Relations Board ruling that allows staff to keep commuting to work without paying tolls. About 75 percent of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority’s 1,519 workers use company-issued transponders to pay for trips back and forth from work. The perk costs the agency $455,000 a year.

Traffic is moving again after an earlier accident closed several lanes on the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway near Elmhurst Road for a short time on Wednesday morning, authorities said. One woman was transported to a hospital after reporting dizziness and headache symptoms, but her injuries did not appear serious, according to police.
