Substantial victory for Bush, Stevenson Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
As two hungry tennis players exchanged shots on one of Warren’s Almond Road campus courts, a plastic platter full of subs and a bag of more sandwiches arrived. Simultaneously, Stevenson’s players — all but Jeremy Bush, who was just thirsty from chasing Kristiyan Trukov forehands — and the Patriots’ three, equally grateful coaches gobbled down dinner. On the court, Bush was hungry to avenge last year’s loss in the North Suburban Conference No. 1 singles final. Fellow senior Trukov of Warren was hungry to prove that his upset of Bush was legitimate. In the end, after nearly three hours of wonderful tennis, Bush got to enjoy a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4 win — and a sandwich. His thoughtful teammates had saved him a sub. “He showed a lot of guts,” Stevenson coach Tom Stanhope said of Bush, whose win completed the Patriots’ 7-0 victory on a sunny-turned-cold Tuesday in Gurnee. “Kris is a great player too.”

No stopping St. Charles East duo Apr 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Nobody has been able to solve St. Charles East's one-two punch of Jasper Koenen and Justin Bowman this season, and nobody came close to snapping their winning streaks Saturday at Geneva's annual invitational. Koenen and Bowman both won their three matches without much of a challenge to win the first and second singles championships, respectively, at the eight-team tournament. The invite also included Geneva, Marmion, IMSA, Oswego, DeKalb, Crystal Lake Central and Lincoln-Way East, who used their doubles play to tie the Saints for the team title with 14 points. The 3-0 record for Koenen and Bowman Saturday improved them both to 11-0 on the young season.

Naperville North shows its strength Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
The Naperville North tennis team's greatest strengths this year are its depth and an evenness of talent throughout the lineup. In Thursday's season-opening match at Glenbard West, the Huskies displayed both those characteristics by sweeping the four doubles matches and defeating the host Hilltoppers 6-1. "These kids had so many brutal challenge matches in practice this week and that helped prepare us for today," Huskies coach Heather Henricksen said. "They're fighting for positions. Everyone wants to play at sectionals and they're all capable of it. We have that evenness in both singles and doubles."
