On a night when both Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows were chasing a host of team records in boys swimming, a diver stole the show. Elk Grove senior Joe Kraemer is among the Mid-Suburban League’s elite divers and seems to be getting better each time out. He hit 253.35 on Friday as the Grenadiers and Mustangs met in the pool at Elk Grove both teams share. Rolling Meadows got the better of the swimming events and earned a 108-75 victory as a pair of improving teams continued to make steady gains while completing their MSL duel seasons.

The Knights, bleached blonde to signify the beginning of the end of the boys swimming season, topped Hersey 105-81 on Thursday at Olympic Pool to complete an unbeaten run through the Mid-Suburban East and claim the school’s first divisional championship since the 2002-03 season.

  • Shaver, Hsu show Glenbard co-op’s progress Jan 25, 2014 10:09 PM
Even though it finished way back in the pack in the team standings at Saturday’s Red Devil Invitational at Hinsdale Central, the Glenbard West/South co-op swimmers produced several highlights that demonstrate that the future looks bright for a team in only its second year of existence. Leading the way for Glenbard was a pair of swimmers who are both candidates to qualify for the state meet and who form the nucleus of some pretty promising freestyle relay teams.

  • Libertyville, U-High test the waters at St. Charles N. Jan 25, 2014 10:06 PM
It’s hard to call anything in the boys swim season prior to the state meet a “preview,” because athletes are in various states of training exhaustion prior to that final weekend. But two of the teams expected to battle for a state trophy in Evanston Feb. 28-March 1 got a look at each other at the St. Charles North Invitational, and put together some very high-quality competition. Libertyville, which finished fourth in the state a year ago, placed second at the St. Charles North Invitational. The meet’s winner was Normal U-High, which was fifth in the state last year.

  • St. Charles North tunes up for postseason Jan 25, 2014 10:57 PM
For years, St. Charles North’s final boys swimming regular season meet has been its own invitational — a meet that brings an eclectic mix of teams to the North Stars pool. Saturday, the North Stars got a chance to test themselves against state powers such as Normal U-High, Libertyville and strong area teams including Barrington and Peoria Notre Dame. St. Charles North finished fifth in its eight-team invitational and now heads into a competitive break that ends Feb. 7-8 with the Upstate Eight Conference meets.

  • Miseyka, Barrington staying focused Jan 25, 2014 9:41 PM
By itself, Sam Miseyka’s 100-yard breaststroke time on Saturday wasn’t so spectacular. But dig into the 1:02.98 time a bit, and it looks more than just decent. It was the senior’s best time of the year. It was 1 second faster than he was at this point a year ago, when he qualified for the state meet in the event. Oh yes, and that time was good enough to win the 100 breaststroke title in a very competitive St. Charles North Invitational field.

  • Prospect in great spot after edging Wheeling Jan 25, 2014 2:56 PM
Prospect’s prospects for winning the Mid-Suburban East boys swimming and diving took a turn for the better on Friday. The Knights, considered the visitor as Wheeling hosted the meet in the pool both squads share at Wheeling High School, pulled out a 95-91 verdict against last year’s fourth-place finisher at the Mid-Suburban League meet. Prospect needs a victory against Hersey on Thursday at Olympic Pool in Arlington Heights to complete an unbeaten run through the MSL East. Hersey, too, is unbeaten against its East foes.

  • Kasemets, Mundelein sink Vernon Hills Jan 23, 2014 10:42 PM
Oakland University-bound Ayrton Kasemets sped to a pair of individual wins and swam on two victorious relays, as Mundelein’s boys swimming team cruised to a 128-51 win over visiting Vernon Hills on Thursday.

  • Libertyville swimmers planning to level up Jan 23, 2014 8:28 PM
In the pool, Libertyville's Bobby Snader, Matt Harrington, Alex Snarski, Atticus Rush and Justin Fu are men among boys. They helped Libertyville achieve its highest finish ever at state last year, as the Wildcats placed fourth. The Wildcats, whose deep roster also includes speedsters Mark Boynton and Pat King, have expectations of winning a top-three trophy at state next month. Which doesn’t mean boys can’t be boys out of the water.

  • Hersey stays perfect, edges Rolling Meadows Jan 23, 2014 9:51 PM
Hersey remains undefeated in Mid-Suburban East boys swimming and diving — this time, by just about the slimmest of margins. The Huskies won just enough close races to claim a 94-92 victory over Rolling Meadows at Olympic Pool in Arlington Heights on Thursday.

In many ways, St. Charles East’s College Events Meet comes at the perfect time every year for the boys swimming co-op involving Dundee-Crown, Jacobs and Hampshire. Moving away from its Christmas vacation training and with still a month before the postseason, coach Rick Andresen’s team gets an opportunity to see how it fares in a meet where distances involve all the usual high school races and 200-yard races that are twice the usual high school distance in each stroke, and also a 1,000 freestyle event.
