  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.

  • Liva leaves MSL meet with a record effort Oct 31, 2014 10:06 PM
According to both Prospect senior diver Dana Liva and her coach, Antonino Bondi, Liva’s performance in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League championship meet was far from perfect. The judges, at the very least, sure liked it a lot. Liva completed a four-year run of MSL championships with a meet and pool record score of 492.45 at Barrington High School.

  • Prospect’s Liva smoothly dives toward postseason success Oct 29, 2014 2:35 PM
There’s a certain smooth symmetry to the high school diving career of Dana Liva. Measured against the state’s best competitors, she’s enjoyed parabolic success in her time competing for Prospect. Her state meet finishes have been 12th as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Plotted against her Mid-Suburban League competitors, the achievement curve has been predictable in a different way: a perfectly straight line of consecutive first-place finishes. When Liva competes starting at 6 p.m. Friday at Barrington in the MSL meet, she’ll gracefully be pursuing conference diving championship No. 4.

  • ‘EC Swims On’ honors Collins’ aquatic legacy Oct 23, 2014 9:22 PM
Faced with the task of finding a fitting way to honor Eric Collins, those closest to him dove right in. The result is called EC Swims On, a swimming meet dedicated to his memory and devoted to seeing the sport he loved continue to thrive. The event will be held Sunday at Olympic Pool, a park district facility in Arlington Heights. A lifelong swimmer and recently the coach of the Arlington Wellness Center’s Masters swim team, Collins died suddenly in April after suffering a pulmonary embolism. He was 42.

  • Zahn, Palatine edge out Conant Oct 17, 2014 12:02 AM
Senior year got here early for Palatine’s Lily Zahn. Though in just her third season as a key member of the Pirates’ girls swimming and diving team, Zahn in is her last year of high school competition. She’ll graduate early in pursuit of greater classroom challenges in advance of a promising collegiate future. “I love having Lily,” said Palatine coach Brittany Berleman, “because she shows that you can do it well, athletically and academically, at the same time.” The athleticism was on display during Palatine’s senior night, as the Pirates wrapped up their Mid-Suburban League duals with a 98-88 victory against visiting Conant.

  • Libertyville’s depth sinks Mundelein Oct 16, 2014 10:05 PM
Lucy Saucedo raced to a pair of individual wins, and Libertyville’s girls swimming team used its depth to defeat host Mundelein 112-74 in North Suburban Conference action Thursday night. Saucedo won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.126, touching out teammate Anne Barnett (2:03.82). Saucedo captured the 500 free in 5:31.25. Mundelein had seven first-place efforts, including a pair each by Erin Falconer and Jenn Kordik. Falconer took the 200 individual medley (2:11.91) and 50 free (25.17), while Kordik was a winner in the 100 free (54.43) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.19), as she edged out Libertyville’s Macey Neubauer (1:07.43) in the latter race.

  • Meadows finishes duals with win over Buffalo Grove Oct 15, 2014 9:49 PM
Rolling Meadows used a first-and-third finish in the meet’s last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to earn a 93-90 finish over Buffalo Grove in girls swimming on Wednesday at the Mustangs’ home pool, at Elk Grove. It wasn’t a perfect night for Meadows, as its top medley relay was disqualified in what would have been a winning effort. But the Mustangs were able to overcome that, plus a 1-2-3 Bison sweep in diving, to finish their Mid-Suburban East duals with a 3-2 record.

  • Loyola backs it up at Barrington Oct 11, 2014 6:28 PM
How good was the competition on Saturday in the Barrington Invitational? Well, many expect Loyola Academy to have a great chance at winning a girls swimming and diving state championship next month, and the most recent results provided no reason to think otherwise. Loyola, which was without senior standout Grace Tierney and also one of its top divers, still managed to take top honors in the seven-team field with 370.5 points. The host Fillies would be thrilled to take one of the top three places at state, so this setting provided a great opportunity for them to see how they measured up. Barrington finished second with 317 points, well ahead of third-place Lyons Township (257) and fourth-place York (218.5). Barrington coach Jim Bart was pleased — at least in the final analysis. “I felt like we were a little bit soft at the start of the meet,” he said. “But after the 50 free, we had a little talk, and I thought we had a pretty nice back half. “Any time you can compete against a team like Loyola, it will help you. It took us a while, but we adjusted well.” Without question, the Ramblers have the finest assembly of backstrokers in the state. Libby Jardeleza broke the pool record by winning that event in 57.47, and teammate Jamie Kolar was second in 58.41. At the JV level, Loyola’s Shannon Kearney won in 58.74, and Margaret Guanci was second in 59.32. That’s right — Loyola has four sub-four-minute 100 backstrokers. “We knew what to expect,” said Barringon senior Emma Barnett, who led the Fillies in the backstroke with a third-place finish in 1:00.98. “They gave us the challenge we needed. “I think it took us a little while to get going, but I think we learned a little bit about ourselves.” The 500 freestyle was certainly a highlight for Barrington, as Kirsten Jacobsen won in 4:56.14 and Maggie Emary was third in 5:06.49. And in the JV 500 free, Maggie Menso won in 5:12.68 and Evelyn Ciskowski was third in 5:31.07. Those are four performers many varsity programs would be happy to have as their No. 1 in the event, and each turned in season-best times on Saturday. Jacobsen, the defending state champ in the 200 and 500 freestyles, also won the 200 free (1:52.25), and Barrington senior Andrea Vega won both the 200 IM (2:11.61) and 100 breast (1:07.02). Barrington had strong efforts in both freestyle relays, but finished second to Loyola in both. The Ramblers gained a huge points advantage in the first event, splitting their talent evenly between two medley relays that both bested Barrington’s top group. As for how this season will turn out for Loyola, well, coach Mike Hengelmann is more than willing to see it unfold at its own pace. “For us, it’s one day at a time, one meet at a time,” he said. “That’s just the only approach that makes any sense to me. “We love swimming here. Jim Bart runs a great program, and any time you have a state champion like Jacobsen to race against, it just makes it a little bit more special.” Other top efforts for the Ramblers came from Olivia Andrew, who was second in the 200 free (1:53.87) and won the 100 free (53.83); Maria Kyle, who won the 100 fly (59.50); and Claire Rushin, who won the 50 free (25.16). Schaumburg finished sixth in the team standings and got a third-place finish from diver Caiti Poland (342.25, 11 dives). The Saxons’ top swimming finish came from freshman Ingrid Hay in the 100 back (ninth, 1:06.18).

  • St. Charles East’s hard work pays off Oct 11, 2014 10:30 PM
October is a month in which girls swimmers learn to dig deep, training incredibly long distances in practice, even prior to meets. Saturday, the Saints saw a bit of the reward that comes from all that work. In their annual college events meet, St. Charles East surpassed its seeded score by 38 points and surged mid-meet to move ahead of Lake Forest and close the gap on New Trier.
