  • Tri-Cities girls swimming state preview Nov 19, 2014 6:18 PM
In the world of fashion, “booted and suited” means to be dressed up, ready to go and rock the world with your sense of style. In swimming, the swimming world, the equivalent phrase is “suited, shaved and tapered,” and those there words have been used a lot this week as the state’s fastest girls swimmers prepare for this weekend’s state meet in Evanston.

  • ‘Sick’ performances from Anderson at sectional Nov 17, 2014 4:47 PM
With the benefit of perspective, perhaps that wasn’t a cold Palatine junior Kristin Anderson was battling on Saturday during the Stevenson girls swimming and diving sectional. After all, lifetime best times are generally not produced without a fully functional respiratory system, and all of Anderson’s swims at the meet were besties, and by a wide margin. Anderson won the 50-yard free (23.63) and the 100 free (51.37), breaking the pool record in the latter. She also anchored Palatine’s state-qualifying 200 freestyle relay. So, OK, perhaps it was seasonal allergies were behind the red nose and slightly swollen face. Either way, it doesn’t look like it’s worth worrying about.

  • Emotional successes for Saucedo, Libertyville Nov 15, 2014 9:18 PM
Once she could see the scoreboard, the reaction was self-explanatory. Libertyville sophomore Lucy Saucedo broke down into tears after seeing her time in the 50-yard freestyle was right at state qualifying cut of 24.59 seconds, which means for the first time in her young career she will head to the state finals next weekend at Evanston Township High School. “I was just trying to break 25 seconds, and when a friend brought my glasses to me in the pool and I could see I qualified, I lost it,” said Saucedo, who later joined teammates Emma Richert, Anne Barnett and Harriet Davies on state-qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “We’ve been working on sprints and less breathing. That really helped me today.”

  • Green means go: Fremd floors it at Stevenson Nov 15, 2014 8:38 PM
Those arriving promptly for the 1 p.m. start of the girls swimming sectional meet at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon were challenged by the volume of traffic around the school, as the Patriots were hosting a Class 8A playoff football which also featured a 1 p.m. kickoff. There was heavy traffic inside the natatorium, too — figuratively moving to the east, toward next weekend’s state championships at Evanston Township High School. Fremd was the most successful lane navigator. The Vikings won all three relays in pool-record times to win with an impressive 299.5 points, topping Barrington (221) and Stevenson (220.5) in the team race.

  • Girls swimming: Fremd seniors focus on final achievement Nov 12, 2014 9:23 PM
It seems fitting that Fremd’s five standout senior swimmers will be remembered for the collective accomplishments. Grace Kneller, Erica King, Julia Portmann, Saki Takumiya and Loretta Stelnicki have individually reached the highest levels of the sport, but it’s their willingness to band together that truly sets them apart. They’ll coalesce as part of three Fremd relays in action at Saturday’s Stevenson sectional, with every reason to believe they’ll advance to the state meet at Evanston the following weekend with an opportunity to score big points in the team race.

  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.
