Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

  • Bartlett’s Robert Sadowski, left, gets congratulated by teammate Mike Roberson after a scoring on a slide into home during Monday’s regional baseball action at Bartlett.

Bartlett hangs on to nip Streamwood May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
The Streamwood baseball team didn't go quietly, but host Bartlett ended the Sabres' season just the same Monday. No. 17 Streamwood rallied for 3 runs in the top of the seventh, courtesy of Illinois recruit Richie Gorski's 2-run triple and a run-scoring groundout from Valparaiso-bound Dalton Lundeen. However, with Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle on first base after a two-out single, Hawks reliever Robert Sadowski induced a groundball to shortstop Ben Grear off the bat of Alex Morrow. Grear's throw nipped the future Northern Illinois running back at first base to seal a 4-3 victory for Bartlett in Monday's play-in game of the Class 4A Lake Park regional.

  • St. Charles North's Alyssa Brandt and Streamwood's Gabby Juarez battle for a header during the St. Charles North girls soccer regional Wednesday.

St. Charles N. blanks Streamwood May 16, 2012 12:00 AM
It took every ounce of effort from Streamwood to ward off St. Charles Norths near-constant attacks through the first half on Wednesdays Class 3A regional semifinal and to keep the match on the North Stars field scoreless. But from the moment Danielle Noverini scored in the sixth minute of the second half, the Sabres were in an uphill battle. When Alyssa Brandt scored 12 minutes later, the hill became a mountain and further North Stars goals by Kelly Manski and Carleigh Dusek completed a 4-0 St. Charles North victory.

  • Hannah Perryman

Perryman Elgin’s new strikeout queen May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
Hannah Perryman put her name ahead of some pretty select company Tuesday afternoon. With her eighth strikeout of the game against Streamwood in the third inning Perryman, Elgins senior standout left-hander became the schools single-season strikeout leader, breaking a record set by Elizabeth Waller in 1996, a record that when the Illinois high school softball pitching distance was moved from 40 to 43 feet, many thought would never be broken. But then, little did anyone know then what Perryman was capable of. She finished with 15 Ks in Elgins 8-0 Upstate Eight River win on Tuesday and now has 330 for the season, eclipsing Wallers 1996 record of 322. Further, Perryman could now threaten Wallers EHS career record of 836 strikeouts. Perryman will take 777 career Ks into Wednesdays Senior Day game against Geneva.

The longest-standing Upstate Eight Conference boys track record fell Thursday. St. Charles East senior Jake Mazanke broke the 800-meter run record that lasted 47 years by finishing in 1:53.47 to win the event at the UEC River Division meet at Burgess Field in Geneva.

  • Kevin Spejcher of Lake Park attempts 6-11.00 during the Upstate 8 Valley Division Conference meet at Streamwood Thursday.

Lake Park on track for title May 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Eighty-nine field event points for Lake Parks boys track team is not a surprise. The defending Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division champs needed contributions elsewhere to fend off Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley and got them.
