Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Asquini’s hot hand lifts St. Charles East Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The last time Jake Asquini played the role of stealth bomber for St. Charles East, he knocked down 6-of-6 3-point shots against St. Charles North last year. The 6-foot-1 sophomore shooting guard nearly matched that Friday night in sweeping in out of nowhere to bust open a tight game at Streamwood with 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Asquini’s team-high 15 points led the Saints to an important 61-43 Upstate Eight River boys basketball victory.

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

Batavia denies Streamwood piece of title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
For all the good things his team did on offense Saturday afternoon, Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen was most pleased with the Bulldogs’ defense. As he should have been. Batavia held Streamwood to its third lowest scoring game of the season and junior Liza Fruendt sparked the separation needed in the third quarter as the Bulldogs blew Streamwood out if its own gym, 65-40, in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action.

Streamwood surprises Geneva Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston couldn’t help but feel his team looked past Streamwood on Friday night. The Sabres were happy to send the Vikings home in a bad mood. Streamwood rallied from a 13-point second-quarter deficit and upset Geneva, 44-43, in overtime in an Upstate Eight River Division matchup.

Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

Burlington Central’s big comeback stuns Streamwood Jan 30, 2013 12:00 AM
The freshman and sophomore group of girls playing on Burlington Central's varsity team this season have, and rightfully so, been given about as much recognition as any of their age in recent memory. But when the game was on the line at Streamwood Wednesday night it was a savvy senior who had ice in her veins. Camille Delacruz, an unsung her for the Rockets all season, calmly stepped to the free throw line with six seconds to play and swished two shots that iced the Rockets' 40-37 come-from-behind nonconference win in a battle between a conference champion and a conference contender that will ultimately serve both well as the postseason approaches.

Burlington Central’s kiddie corps has exceeded expectations Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been well chronicled that Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith knew he had some talent coming in when he took the Rockets' head coaching job. And Smith knows talent. His daughter, Kelsey, plays at DePaul and as a boys baskeball coach for several seasons at St. Charles North, as well as a former high school and college player himself, Smith knows good players when he sees them. But even Smith admits being surprised at how well his freshman-laden team has done this season. At 19-4 overall and having secured their first Big Northern East championship since 2006-07, the Rockets also cracked the Daily Herald Top 20 this week for the first time this season, and they're the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A regional that they will host. Central has not won a girls basketball regional since 1990 and has only three regional banners in program history.

Elgin beats Streamwood to snap losing streak Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
The one consistent thing the Elgin boys basketball team did during its four-game losing streak was play pretty good defense. That didn't change Saturday evening. The result did. The Maroons broke their losing streak with a 51-37 Upstate Eight River Division victory over host Streamwood.

Geneva tops Streamwood, bottles up UEC River Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
The Streamwood girls basketball team usually likes it when an opponent plays a zone defense. But Friday night was not a night the Sabres would hit the like button. Geneva, which played a man-to-man defense against Streamwood in a 53-45 loss to the Sabres on Dec. 12, came out in a 2-3 zone Friday at Streamwood and challenged the Sabres to knock down outside shots. Streamwood didn't. Geneva overcame two starters fouling out and a 3-for-11 free throw performance in the fourth quarter to hold off the Sabres, 54-43, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game. The win brought the Vikings (13-10, 7-2) back into a virtual tie for the River lead with the Sabres (17-5, 8-2). The Vikings still have River games with Larkin today, then Elgin and St. Charles North next week while Streamwood plays Larkin and Batavia next week.

Balanced effort takes South Elgin to state Jan 23, 2013 12:00 AM
The South Elgin boys bowling team will not knock your socks off with extravagant scores from one or two competitors. Instead, the Storm gets the job done with a balanced lineup whose sum is much greater than the individual parts. That team balance helped the Storm arrive at today's IHSA boys bowling state finals in Downstate O'Fallon at St. Clair Lanes. South Elgin was the second and final team qualifier out of last weekend's DeKalb sectional.
