  • Vernon Hills, Stevenson move on to sectional May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Vernon Hills baseball coach Jay Czarnecki said Tyler Feece didn't have his best stuff Saturday. It was good enough, though. Feece found a way to get outs when he needed them in pitching the second-seeded Cougars to a 2-1 win over No. 7 Grayslake North in the championship game of the Class 3A Vernon Hills regional. Vernon Hills (28-7) advanced to the Grayslake Central sectional and will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Deerfield regional. • Zion-Benton eliminates Stevenson May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
At the Barrington boys volleyball sectional, Stevenson ran smack dab into what some are saying is a team of destiny. Or maybe it's simply a talented, motivated swarm of Zee-Bees. But whatever you want to name them, there's one thing you can for certain call No. 6 seed Zion-Benton: Sectional finalists. Despite overcoming an almost insurmountable deficit in the second game, the Patriots fell 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 to the Zee-Bees in Friday's semifinals. Zion-Benton (29-8), led by the solid hitting of 6-foot-5 senior right side Josh Hieb (10 kills), moves on to play Barrington at 7 p.m. Tuesday night for the right to advance to next weekend's state finals.

For the 2011-12 Lake County Academic Team, high school was just the beginning, of what they hope will be lives of discovery, success, and service. • Stevenson’s Bush blossoms in big win over Bloom May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Boys tennis coaches at state meets get to sit and coach courtside for the big matches, beginning with the quarterfinals. Assistant coach Jeff Zanchelli performed the duty for Stevenson at Friday's singles quarterfinal between Patriots junior Jeremy Bush and Hinsdale Central senior Sam Bloom at Hersey. Bush, seeded 5-8, thumped second-seeded Bloom 6-3, 6-1 in toasty Arlington Heights. The expression Bush wore while warming up for the match was identical to the one he sported during match point: placid. "I heard him breathing on (court) changeovers," said Zanchelli. "Even that was calm. Jeremy was so composed from the beginning of the match until the end, and he played with so much belief in himself." Mark Linnenberger, another Patriots assistant, also marveled at Bush's burning desire to remain cool. "Not once did Jeremy show a negative emotion in that match," Linnenberger said. "Not after missing a shot he should've made or after Sam hit a winner on a big point. Jeremy was in control and it showed — for the entire match. "That win," he added, "has to be one of the biggest wins in program history."

  • Super win suits Stevenson May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Tim Crow's 5-year-old daughter ran excitedly toward him to give celebratory hugs, or just plain old daddy hugs. Then the 3-year-old son of Stevenson's boys volleyball coach did the same, while wife Jen held the couple's 1-year-old boy. The trio of color-coordinated Crow kids all wore "super fan" T-shirts made by mommy. Crow's other kids, "the ones I see more than my own," he said, were done running around for the night. The Patriots were celebrating on their home court after outlasting Carmel Catholic 25-20, 25-20 in the teams' regional final in Lincolnshire on Wednesday. "There's a lot of sharing right now," said Crow, Stevenson's girls volleyball coach, too. "My wife is incredible."
