Bush, Stevenson finish strong May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Whatever the motivation needed to reach the grand prize, Stevenson’s Jeremy Bush found it. He used it to put the finishing touches on a magnificent career and a second-place team trophy for the Patriots on Saturday in the boys tennis state tournament finals at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. The four-year star came through when it mattered the most, defeating North Suburban Conference rival Peter Tarwid of Lake Forest in the final match of the three-day tournament. Doing so gave the Patriots the needed point to draw them even with the Scouts for second place in the team standings. The North Suburban Conference powers both finished with 36 points. Hinsdale Central won the championship for a second straight season, this time with a staggering 59 points. It’s the Red Devils’ fifth state title since 2007.

Harvey/Komarov save the day for Stevenson May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Third-set heroics from Colin Harvey and Andrew Komarov not only saved the day for themselves, but likely also a chance at a team trophy as Stevenson's top doubles team came all the way back to win a marathon three-setter and advance into Saturday's semifinals of the boys tennis state tournament. Harvey/Komarov (20-2) roared back from a 7-6 (4) first-set loss to Lake Forest's John Zordani/Scott Christian (27-2) to win the next two sets, the last in dramatic fashion on Friday. That helped ease the sting of a disappointing day of tennis for the Patriots, while at the same time pushing coach Tom Stanhope's team just ahead of Lake Forest (31-30) in the race for second place.

Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much isn't: it worked on Friday for Fobbe. His first throw in the prelims was the best he has ever thrown the shot. The loud grunt was accompanied by an equally loud thud as the shot landed 56 feet, 7 inches from the ring. Another personal best throw marked an improvement of 10 feet over the last two weeks and a spot in the finals with the second-best toss from prelims.

Stevenson makes most of chances, ousts Rolling Meadows May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Sixth-seeded Stevenson and No. 11 Rolling Meadows both took advantage of some miscues Friday afternoon in the Class 4A Carmel baseball regional. But the Patriots were able to make the most of their opportunities in the end as they overcame a late 5-4 deficit to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Mustangs in the semifinal round. Stevenson (19-11) will face No. 3 host Carmel Catholic (25-9) for the regional championship at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Rolling Meadows closed out its season with a 19-11 record.

‘Home’ run suits Elert, Carmel May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
If her line-drive, gone-in-a-second smash had been hit more to center field, the softball might have rolled all the way to her Libertyville house. Amanda Elert’s 3-run homer in the first inning, truth be told, was hit that hard. It was the Carmel Catholic freshman catcher’s 10th home run of the season and propelled the fifth-seeded Corsairs to a 14-4 win in five innings over No. 12 Stevenson in the teams’ Class 4A regional semifinal at Libertyville on Thursday. “She’s just a very polished hitter,” Carmel Catholic coach Jason Raymond said. “Almost every at-bat, she gets great swings on the ball.” Think Elert was excited to play on Libertyville’s diamond? She lives five minutes away, between Carmel and Libertyville high schools. If she wasn’t attending Carmel, she’d be a Libertyville Wildcat.

Bush leads Stevenson as NSC brings numbers May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson lived up to its billing, and its North Suburban Conference brethren stayed in the limelight as well as the first day of the 98th boys tennis state tournament drew to a close Thursday. After brief rainfall welcomed the 64-player singles field at 12 sites near host Hersey in Arlington Heights, Patriots top player Jeremy Bush sent a trio of opponents packing to earn his spot in the fourth round against 17-32 seed Mack Galvin (35-5), a freshman from Rolling Meadows. Their 9 a.m. Friday match will take place at Hersey, where all the singles competition from the championship bracket will be held. Doubles will be contested at Buffalo Grove, where the Patriot team of Colin Harvey/Andrew Komarov (18-2) take on 9-16 seed Naperville Central (Wesley Lo-Sid Swamy). The Patriots’ Pawel Jaworski/Josh Lieberman, 24-4) will take the courts opposite Lake Forest’s Cameron Bagheri/Connor O’Kelly. The tandems split a pair of meetings earlier this season.

The 6-3, 230-pounder won't play O-line, though. Rather, Marchese will long snap.

Fenwick turns away Stevenson May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Host Stevenson knew it had a huge task on its hands in attempting to knock off perennial power Fenwick Saturday night for the boys water polo state championship. And after a one-year hiatus, the Friars' dynasty returned to the mountain top as they built a 7-3 lead over the Patriots after three quarters before finishing an impressive 10-4 victory for first place in Lincolnshire. Fenwick (31-5) has now won 10 state titles, including nine crowns in the past 10 seasons.

Stevenson strong in sectional win May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
There was nothing but black and green atop the victory stand Saturday afternoon when the Stevenson boys tennis sectional came to a close on the sun-kissed courts of the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. The Patriots recorded a clean sweep at doubles, then watched a nearly three-hour match finally swing in favor of freshman Benjamin Bush over senior Varun Parekh (Barrington). That outcome gave the hosts Patriots a third-place singles medal to go along its championship singles hardware from Jeremy Bush as Stevenson wrapped up the team title.

Ellis won her qualifying 400 qualifying heat in 55.18 on Friday in the girls track and field state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University.

Stevenson digs deep, knocks Conant from state tourney May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Host Stevenson was rolling in the deep end of the pool Friday night in the second half of the Patriots' boys state water polo state quarterfinal game against Conant. The Cougars proved that their sparkling 30-3 record heading into the state tournament was for real as they led 2-1 after one quarter before the Pats rallied back to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The very close and evenly matched back-and-forth battle wound up being tied at 6-6 on a breakaway goal by Conant's Jon Burke with 4:12 left in the third quarter. But Stevenson (22-9-1) and goalie Rob O'Brien played shutout defense the rest of the way as 5 goals by junior Mitchell Sokolsky paved the way to a 9-6 Patriots victory.
