In Saturday's North Suburban Conference boys swimming meet, Mundelein's Connor Black broke the 100 butterfly pool record set in 1994 by Tucker Shade of Decatur MacArthur in a quick 48.76. Host Lake Forest (286) edged Stevenson (283) in the team standings, meaning those teams share the overall conference championship.

It all clicks for Warren’s Hicks Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Flying under the radar last season as teammate Shakhiem Chapman enjoyed most of the spoils on his way to a third-place state finish, Warren’s Danny Hicks had a wonderful year himself in 2012. It’s looking like 2013 might be even better for Hicks after Saturday’s result at the Class 3A Barrington sectional. The senior won his second consecutive sectional title, this one coming at the expense of Libertyville junior Austin Koziol (28-11) in a 5-0 decision to send the star 170-pounder into the state tournament next weekend with a full head of steam.

It all adds up in another Stevenson win Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson is one of those “pick your poison” basketball teams. If somehow you figure out a way to stop super sophomore Jalen Brunson, then fellow fine sophomore Colby Cashaw will burn you inside and outside. Add the outside shooting of Andy Stempel and Matt Morrissey, and there is no wonder why the Patriots are the top seed in the Waukegan sectional. “They have four really good players,” Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. “And with Cashaw hitting 3s, they are hard to defend.” On its march to a North Suburban Conference Lake Division title, the visiting Patriots hit their first three baskets from three-point range and never looked back in beating Lake Zurich 62-49 Saturday night.

Count it: Brunson, Pats win again Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
If Stevenson sophomore Jalen Brunson calls it a dunk, it must have been a dunk. In any case, it was about the only questionable play from Brunson in the Patriots’ North Suburban Lake contest with Lake Forest on Friday night. The play from Brunson helped Stevenson to a 12-point lead, and even though the “dunk,” his third of the season, front-rimmed before eventually going down, it was a key 2 points for the Patriots. “Yeah, that was a dunk,” Patriots sophomore Connor Cashaw said with a smile. “It was a great play.” Whether it was a clean dunk or not, it was just one out of several spectacular plays for Brunson in the second half. He scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and Stevenson never trailed in defeating the Scouts for the second time this season 59-50.

No slowing Stevenson as Pats win 8th straight Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Visiting Waukegan was missing its starting point guard, Jordan Johnson, who was on crutches at game time in Lincolnshire. But would it really have mattered that much? Clearly Johnson would have trouble covering the likes of the likes of Connor Cashaw, Jalen Brunson, Andy Stempel and Matt Morrissey. All four of those Patriots players scored in double figures on Tuesday night. Stevenson (18-4) made it eight wins in a row with an impressive 66-49 win over an athletic bunch from Waukegan.

Stevenson’s 1-2 punch sparks win over Libertyville Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
As the tempo continued to pick up on Friday night, it was hardly a surprise that Connor Cashaw and Jalen Brunson stole a good portion of the spotlight. The Stevenson duo put together a series of highlight-reel plays to spark the host Patriots to a 75-59 victory over Libertyville. Cashaw exited the floor with 15 points, 3 steals, 4 assists and 5 rebounds, while Brunson piled up 17 points and 3 steals.

By any measure, Stevenson’s Weber is exceptional Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
t's difficult for the average person to realize just how much you need to sacrifice to become a great high school wrestler. And while the road to his current No. 3 state ranking has not always been an easy one, Stevenson 145-pound senior Justin Weber knows what it means to pay the price first hand in his quest to ultimately reach the top of this extremely demanding sport.

Stevenson eager to harvest top seed Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
As far as planting a seed goes, the Stevenson boys basketball team has done just that ahead of next week's IHSA seeding process. The 16-4 Patriots, who have won six straight games and nine of their last 11, have proven that they deserve heavy consideration for the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Waukegan sectional, which includes all of Lake County's Class 4A teams as well as some from northwest Cook County and McHenry from McHenry County.

Libertyville’s Dunsing gets it done Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Jenna Dunsing of Libertyville knows this might be her last, best chance of reaching the girls gymnastics state meet. It’s a goal that Dunsing has been trying to reach over the last three years. She made her first appearance back from a grade II ankle sprain suffered at the Palatine Invitational six weeks ago, and another one Thursday night at the Stevenson regional. She’ll get at least one more appearance. Dunsing advanced to next week’s Stevenson sectional, tying for second on the floor exercise with Valerie Fung of Niles West with a 9.075 in her best event. Stevenson won the team title with 140.175, and Libertyville placed second at 138.75.
